Psycho
It was a rough and early morning start for Jun. Though often he was a morning person, the first to wake up, the first to wake up everyone else, he’d been preparing for this day for weeks. It was starting to take its toll, but that would never stop him. After doing the bare minimum to clean up after dragging himself out of bed, leaving the rest to his stylists, he was ready to shoot a scene for his newest single, Psycho. Tiptoeing carefully through the house, he had tried to be as quiet as possible, as to not wake his little one. He’d had trouble enough putting you down for bed the night before so you needed all the sleep you could get. But similarly to the sharp, tiny creature, you had the ears of an owl. And so, he inevitably felt a tug-tug on the hem of his sweater, a set of sleepy, pleading eyes looking up at him.
“Daddy, don’t go ‘way!!” you begged, bouncing on the balls of your feet, your bottom lip quivering, your eyes tired and weary.
No matter how exhausted you were, you didn’t want your Daddy to go anywhere without you. So he found himself changing you into a matching sweater and leggings and picking you up, along with his belongings, to head off to the film set. But first, you needed to learn some ground rules.
“Okay baby, you can come with Daddy, but you gotta promise you won’t peek because Daddy’s work might be scary for a little one like you, okay?”, he gently bounced you in his arms with a smile, “You can play on Daddy’s phone but no calling ANY of your samchons-“
He eyed you knowingly, noting your giggles with a shake of his head. Always your first instinct when his phone was at finger length.
“-because every single one of them is still sleeping right now. think you can handle that for me?”
You nod your head, albeit disappointed. you wanted to watch your Daddy work, after all. Each time left you awestruck, but you couldn't fathom breaking your daddy’s heart, so you agreed.
“Can call Shùshu Hao when he wake up?” you asked hopefully, playing with the long sleeves of your sweater.
The person you loved the most right after your daddy had to be your Shùshu Hao, and you asked to call him whenever you had your little hands on Jun’s phone. Minghao never minded of course, it was always fun to give Jun a little grief and see his favourite little one.
“You have to send him a message first, to make sure he’s awake. You know how Shùshu Hao likes his sleep. But yes, if he’s awake, you can call him until Daddy’s done .”
Clapping your hands with a satisfied giggle, you lay your head against the crook of his neck letting yourself rest a little more as he carried you down to the waiting car. When you finally arrived, you were a ball of energy. You wanted to see anything and everything, peek at all the equipment and maybe have a staff member show you how the special effects worked to make your Daddy shine during his performance. As much as it pained him, Jun immediately scooped you up before you could go wild.
“Okay!”, he grabbed you in his arms before you could zoom past him, “Not so fast, little one. Didn’t you make a promise to me, baby?”
Kicking at the ground, you crossed your arms over your chest blowing just a little huff from the pout on your lips, “Daddy din’ say no runnin’ ‘round...”
“Well Daddy’s saying it now, no? Can you be a good girl and sit quietly for me? Play a game on my phone, no peeking?”, he couldn't help but coo at your pursed lips, bouncing you lightly on his hip.
Jun had been worried you’d be frightened by what you saw, the set itself was intimidating enough. From his age check with you earlier, you were feeling around three years old, and he knew dealing with a terrified three year old, trying to convince you that he was still your Daddy and not some scary villain would be extremely difficult to say the least.
Sitting you down in a large, comfy chair behind the camera, his heart warmed at the sight of you practically drowning in it.
“Aigoo, Bāobèi,” he purred, pinching your cheeks. “Daddy loves you. Be good, kay? Remember Daddy’s rules.” he gave you a final, small kiss on the nose and placed his noise canceling headphones over your ears, as you eagerly reached for the phone to do whatever it was you liked to do on there.
Not even an hour had passed before the growling of your tummy distracted you from your cat collecting game (one you’d taken over from your Daddy). Jun had rushed you out of the house after you’d changed, only grabbing you a banana before you left. Usually, a foodie himself, he’d make sure you had a full tummy before the two of you went anywhere. But short on time, he’d remembered there’d be food on set for him to feed you when they had their first break. Though you ignored it at first, eventually you lowered the phone, keeping your eyes in your lap like you promised, having a hard think.
Surely your Daddy wouldn't mind if you broke the rules to ask a staff member for food, or even better, your Daddy himself? Food was certainly very important for little babies. So you placed his phone and headphones on your chair and toddled over to where everyone was standing and where Jun was currently filming.
The lighting, the contrasting clothing, it was all harsh on your eyes, your hands rushing to rub them. Though it was a little confusing, It wasn’t your first set so your eyes scanned the faces looking for your favourite one. When you finally found him, you felt a tightness in your throat. The man wearing black and leather looked like your Daddy but not. Dark makeup lined his eyes, his expression shifting drastically, startlingly. Dead, angry, maniacal. The crowd of dancers creeped around in striped shirts following their calculated choreography as they surrounded him. No longer muffled by the headphones, loud music boomed in your ears, and an almost familiar voice sang angry words in a language you’d come to know as Chinese. But it wasn’t sweet or soft or silly like it used to be as it came from his lips.
Never had you seen your Daddy angry before. Surely this couldn’t be him, it couldn’t be your Daddy. Only a scary man who looked like him and had his voice and careful movements sharp and smooth. Quickly the scene before you blurred, confusion spiraling into fear as hot tears filled your eyes.
Before you realized it, your feet were carrying you back to your chair, faster and faster until the headphones were in your hands and over your ears. You let it drink you up again, curling into a tight ball with your eyes closed tightly, trying desperately to keep your tears at bay. So tightly that spots filled your vision in the darkness behind your eyelids but even that was not enough to keep the flashes images from haunting you. Jun - no - not Jun’s villainous face at the front of your mind, an evil smile striking a piercing fear into your heart.
“No.. no..”, you rubbed at your eyes furiously, trying to make it go away, your fists wet with tears.
When the director called for a break, Jun ran over to you eagerly with a shining smile on his face. He was feeling good about the progress they’d made, the vision for Psycho truly coming to life. But his movements slowed when he saw you balled up. You had woken pretty early so it wasn’t a surprise that you may have drifted off.
“Hi, my sweet baby. Daddy’s almost done, Okay? I promise. You feeling sleepy?”, he stood over the chair, cooing softly, a hand coming to rest on your shoulder. Though the movement was tiny, his hand froze immediately feeling you flinch away from him.
“Baby?? Hey, what's wrong?”
When you turned, just a little, then a little more until he was clear in front of you, smokey eyeliner and all, immediately you burst into tears. Too excited to see his baby, he hadn’t taken off his makeup or changed out of his clothes, not even to prepare for the next set.
“Sweetie, what's going on?? Why are you crying? Is Daddy’s makeup too scary?”, Jun knelt by your side, his eyes heavy with worry.
“Daddy no Daddy!! Daddy scary!! T-too many people n’ Daddy yelling n’ angry and–” hiding your face in the chair from his frightening appearance, your sobs caught in your throat, little hiccups preluding the most broken, drawn out wail. Jun could swear he heard his heart break right then and there.
“Baby… Oh, my baby girl, please don’t be scared. Daddy’s just pretending, okay?”, he risked moving closer, laying his head against you, “it’s like when Cheolie samchon dressed as a biiiig cherry for Halloween, yea? Do you remember that??
A moment, just a short moment, passed before you nodded quietly against the chair. He lifted his head with a small smile, finally able to rest his hand on your arm.
“Daddy is just pretending to be not Daddy right now! All of it is pretend. There’s no need to be scared, my little one. Daddy is still Daddy, and still loves you so much, yeah?”
Even though you nodded, he could feel you weren’t fully convinced. Rubbing his thumb against you, he had a thought that was sure to cheer his baby up.
“Wanna call your Shùshu Hao? He can tell you all about when he plays pretend too. We can call him over here, yea, baby?”, he offered, feeling you relax a little as you contemplated.
At this, you finally lifted your tear streaked face and nodded for a third time.
“Can I give my baby a kiss?”
Another nod. He maneuvered you around to face him fully, stroking your cheek before pressing a kiss to your forehead and wrapping his arms around you. How scared and alone you had felt without him instantly melted away as you clung to him.
Twenty or so minutes later, you were sitting happily on your Shùshu Hao’s lap, munching on a bungeoppang and swinging your legs as you watched a Going Seventeen episode. Hao watched along in between critiquing Jun as he filmed.
“Nice, right?”, Jun mouthed, wiggling his eyebrows as he revealed his third outfit, head-to-toe red leather.
“No no, Jun Ge, you look silly. Xiao jiahuo, doesn’t your daddy look silly?” Minghao’s tongue poked at the inside of his cheek as his finger poked at yours.
“Daddy look like a big st’awbi!” You exclaimed, to which Jun and Hao both giggled.
“Feeling all better now, baby?” Hao asked, shaking you playfully in his lap.
“a lil’.” you mumbled, scrunching up your nose.
“So cutie, what if we go get ice cream? Just baby and Shùshu Hao time?”, he grinned, the shaking reduced to gentle sways back and forth.
“Yah!! Minghao dìdì, I see you plotting with my baby.”, Jun surprised the two of you, appearing out of nowhere to scoop you up in his arms.
“But Daddy, Shùshu gon’ gib me ice c’eam!” you giggle, pinching at your Daddy’s cheeks like he always did to you as he mockingly pouted his ‘sympathies’.
“But Daddy can get you ice cream too. Much better ice cream than your Shùshu ever could.”, most maturely, he stuck his tongue out over your shoulder at Minghao who only smirked in response.
“Xiao jiahuo, your Daddy is being an even bigger baby than you are.” he said, booping your nose.
“Wahh…Bāobèi, say it isn't so!!”Jun gasped dramatically, but you ignored him, as the phone in your hand started speaking.
“Jun hyung?”
“Jihoon samchon!!” you squealed, squirming excitedly in Jun’s grasp.
Jun only sighed but an unmistakable grin still glowed warmly on his face. You really couldn’t resist calling up any of the boys once a phone was in your hands. Jihoon was another of your favorite uncles. Although he was reserved and quiet, he still had the soft spot for you, and you used it every chance you could get.
“Hmm, baby? Why’d you call?” Jihoon held his phone up over his face to see you clearly. He was still lying in bed, barefaced and hair mussed.
“Shùshu and Daddy wan’ go fo’ ice c’eam n I wan’ you to come too.” you pouted. Most of the boys were absolute suckers for your big, pleading eyes, your Daddy being the worst of all.
“Aww, I'd love that. Want me to invite some others too?”, at this you nodded your head excitedly.
“Just don’t invite everyone, you know it’ll be too chaotic.'' Jun took the phone, warning Jihoon lightly, his signature smile still soft in its place.
But really, he was more worried of how you'd feel regressed in front of all thirteen men, but he wouldn't say that in front of you. He couldn’t stand to see anymore tears from his baby. Luckily, Jihoon understood.
“You got it..” he nodded.
“Bye bye, Hoonie samchon!!” you cried out, poking your head back into view of the camera as Jihoon waved a short goodbye before hanging up.
“You're so spoiled by your samchons, but you know that, don’t you?” Jun teased as he lowered you into Minghao’s lap hearing someone call out a one minute warning on set.
“Be a good girl for Shùshu, okay?”
With a giggle you agreed, squeaking just a little when Minghao squeezed you tight.
“I thought i'd die when your Daddy took you away!!” Minghao half whined with a laugh once Jun was safely out of swinging distance.
“Now you’re silly, Shùshu!!”, you shook your head.
Jihoon and the others still hadn’t arrived by the time Jun had finished filming and even took off his makeup so the three of you headed out, ready to call him up again.
“Hoonie’s here!!”, you jumped down from Jun’s arms and ran down the sidewalk, right through the narrow space between Cheol and Joshua and straight into Jihoon’s arms.
“Couldn’t wait another second, huh?”, he laughed, bouncing you on his hip for a second before handing you over to Joshua and Chan and shaking off the lovebug leech he liked to call Hoshi so some of the other guys could greet you while he had a word with your Daddy.
“She handle today alright?”, he asked as they walked to their next destination to get you the very best ice cream, at least within the vicinity.
They’d all talked about Jun’s concept a lot over the past couple months. It was expertly crafted to say the least. But appropriate for a three year old?? Maybe not so much.
“Maybe not the best. But that’s on me. I probably should have left her with you today.”, Jun laughed, giving Minghao a friendly elbow to the arm.
“Are you gonna let her watch the music video when it’s out?”, Jihoon pressed.
You were Jun’s responsibility, and it was ultimately his choice. But the guys cared for you a whole lot.
“Absolutely not.”
The three of them let out a few laughs loud enough to catch your attention again and bring you right back to your Daddy from the silly shenanigans of the other members who were currently acting out some of Jun’s choreography.
“Not while my little baby is little.”, he smiled at you, kissing your cheek with a loud “mwah” once he had you on his hip again, “Right?”
“Right!”, you giggled, having not a single clue what they were talking about but your Daddy was always right (when it was convenient).
