Principle’s Office - A What We Will Lost (What We Will Be) Drabble.

Many thanks to @earthlaughsinflowersblog​ and @raymondebidochonlifechoices for prompting to return to the What We Lost (What We Will Be) universe. This story is firmly set in that universe and won’t make sense without it.

Junebug’s slouches further into her chair. Across the office Tamara is sitting up straight and glaring at her, Tamara’s mom is sitting beside her, looking every bit the high powered lawyer she’s rumoured to be.

Junebug’s relieved at least that Betty’s coming to the meeting, and not Jug, whose in Manhattan meeting with his agent today. Betty’s pretty well respected as a vice-principal, at the high school nearby. There’s no way Principle Featherworth hasn’t heard about her.

Hopefully Betty’s reputation will work in Junebug’s favor, she’s not actually sure why she’s in the principal's office right now, but based on the smug look on Tamara’s face, Tamara’s set Junebug up for failure in a new and spectacular way.  As if ruining Junebug’s t-shirt and cheating off her tests, wasn’t enough.

Right now Featherworth seems much more concerned with Betty’s absence than June’s presence. “Where is your mother?” he barks, an irritated look on his face.

“Probably still trying to get here from work.”

The high school is across town from the middle school and even in 2:00 in the afternoon they’ll be some traffic.

“Can’t we get started without her?” Tamara’s mother asks. “I have important work to return to.”

The door opens behind them, and Betty glides in, in one of those pantsuits she likes so much. “Sorry, I’m late.” She says sitting next to June. “Now what’s this about?”

The Principle scowls at Betty’s smile, before saying “Your daughter was accused of stealing Tamara’s backpack.”

“I would never,” Junebug retorts immediately.

“Than why did we find it in your locker?” Featherworth says, lips pressed together in disapproval as he pulls the backpack up from behind the desk.

It’s a ridiculous backpack for a middle schooler. It’s leather for one thing, and has a designer label. It’s the sort of backpack Junebug things a celebrity should have, not Tamara who still bites her nails.

But it doesn’t really matter because even if Junebug thinks Tamara should have the same plasticy backpack the rest of them have, she wouldn’t do anything about it.

Tamara’s popular and beloved even outside of their class, and Junebug has two friends, one of whom she’s fairly certain is fairweather. Junebug knows better than to agitate Tamara by stealing her backpack.

“Was Junebug’s locker locked?” Betty asks, leaning forward, glaring at the backpack as if it offended her.

“No.” Principle Featherworth says, “That’s not unusual. Half our students don’t lock their lockers.”

“Did Tamara lock hers?”

“No, but that’s hardly the point.”

“We’re going. That’s the point.” Betty says, standing up, a stern look on her face.

“But you can’t leave.” Principle Featherworth states. Junebug’s never seen him look this angry before. There’s a scowl on his face. “A serious complaint has been filed against your daughter. She is suspended.”

A grin swallows up Betty’s face. One that makes Junebug feel a little bad for the principle, and everyone else in the room that isn’t her.

“Principle Featherworth, if half the lockers are left unlocked and someone took Tamara’s backpack from hers, why would they put it in their own locker, when they could simply stash it somewhere else discreetly? If they were going to stash it in their own locker wouldn’t they simply lock it. How did you find the backpack in the first place?”

The Principles cheeks are flushed red. “An anonymous tip.”

Betty laughs, and then stands up “Well then, mystery solved. Tamara probably stuck her own backpack in Junebug’s locker as part of her ongoing bullying tactics towards my daughter.”

It’s Junebug’s turn to be shocked. She hadn’t even told Betty about Tamara.

“Come on Junebug,” Betty says. “I already had to leave work, we might as well take the rest of the afternoon off and watch a movie.”

“But….” Tamara’s mother finally says.

Betty glares at her and whatever sentence the other woman was about to say, dies on her tongue.

“Junebug will be back at school tomorrow. And before you get any ideas, I have evidence of the bullying and I’m not afraid to use it.” Betty directs that last part of the sentence directly at Tamara’s mother.

“Come on Junebug.” Betty says, and Junebug follows her out of the principal's door, feeling a little in awe of her mother.

When her words finally return to her, Junebug asks “Are we actually going to go to the movies?”

“Do you have a better way to celebrate our victory?”

Junebug shakes her head.

Hobbies include animal rescue and swimming at the strait of joebralter with their besties. Their jeans have sunflowers embroidered on them by one of their friends.
