My Experience as a Junior Mind Mover
By Reese Young (10 years old, St. Theresa’s College, Quezon City)
Being part of The Mind Museum’s Junior Mind Movers program had been an unforgettable summer experience for me. As a whole, I learned that science is an endless search for knowledge.
My fellow JMMs and I listened to lectures on different science topics and performed experiments each day throughout the 10-day workshop. All the scientific ideas in the workshop were all creative and fun. They are interesting and also easy to perform, all under the supervision of the museum staff.
For example, we learned about atoms, compounds, and elements, and we were able to make our own plastic or flexible substance with the “Slime” experiment. We also made the “Elephant Toothpaste” experiment using hydrogen peroxide, and the result is a foam that looked like toothpaste but rose high enough! We also had fun when we made our own volcano experiment and had our chance to fly our own simple rockets, using vinegar and baking soda. We also did the “Fire Jet,” “Burn-Your-Money,” “Milk Planet,” and insect fossil experiments, among others.
In science, things should not be considered as real easily. If you saw something strange, important evidence is needed to prove them. You need to experiment. When it comes to attitudes, curiosity, patience, critical thinking, and honesty are important. With the experiments we performed, I realized that science could really be cool and amazing, as well as important in improving people’s lives. The activities also made us see new and interesting things and that we should also be alert and observant with our surroundings.
The Mind Museum is a great place to learn about science, do experiments, and participate in workshops. The science museum is an extraordinary place of learning and fun. I would like to join the JMM again next summer.
