The beginning to that fantasy story I was talking about earlier. It’s about this major battle between good and evil. This part is essentially the beginning that isn’t the beginning. Like a teaser, I guess. Also, help me think of a title! Rae is @snakesonawave‘s OC

Everything, from the inside and the outside, hurt. Like sharp knives slowly sliding under Juno’s skin. She opened her eyes, which felt like the Underworld itself was burning her, and pushed herself up. The world around her was bleak, a solid white color with nothing else to give it a solid feeling. It felt unstable, like she if her movement was too sporadic, she’d fall into this... nothingness. She stood, ignoring her endless torment, and found that there was solidity below her feet. She took in deep, tired breaths before looking around again, this time seeing a solid figure beside her. The woman would have pulled out her blades and held it to their throat, or stumbled away from them, but her pain was too great and she ended up staring at them. Their eyes were familiar, like an old friend, but also had something in them that warned her to stay away.

“Do I have your attention?” they moved forward, now right before her. A fierce coldness radiated from them, that sent chills down the Juno’s spine. She responded with a simple nod. “I assume you have questions.” “Where am I?” she asked quickly, like if she didn’t she’d forget it was even in her mind. “Where is this place? Who are you?” “The in-between. And I am the Keeper.” they told her and her words enveloped her skin in such a fierce coldness that it felt like she’s been frozen then and there. “You died and are now here, at a pivotal moment to decide your future.” Juno stared at them with fear in her eyes and a fire was thrown into the center of her chest. “What do you mean I died?” she grabbed the being’s arms, holding their wrists tightly. “Wha-- how am I dead? I-- no it’s... what do you mean?” she shook their arms, desperate for an answer. “Your heart ceased to work. You were killed in the battle of the Emerald Sea.” “No... no no no.” Juno sunk to her knees, still holding their arms. Tears fell from her eyes, falling endlessly once they broke from her skin. “Why am I here?” “To make a choice.” they pulled their hands from hers, and crouched down before her. “You may move forward, to death, to no more pain, and no more worry of the war.” they paused, and Juno’s eyes were focused on them, awaiting desperately on their next words. “Or you may live again. Fight the war, love, but be subject to the pain you had faced. Face the possibility of even worse loss than you face today.” without any hesitation, Juno answered. “Live. I chose to live. I chose to love and to fight and to feel pain. I wish to go back. Please.” “Even if there was a request of a sacrifice? If I needed your sight?” “Anything. Please... let me go back to Rae. Let me go back to my fight and live.” their hand stroked Juno’s cheek and a small smile crossed their lips. They leaned forward and kissed each of her eyes before leaning back once again. “Juno, of the clan Ondovaul, you have a courage rivaled by the gods. Your fight is far from over. Stay strong.”

It was like lightning struck her chest. It ripped through her body and sent her bolting straight up, gasping as air filled her lungs. It was a sweetness she’d never felt before. She grabbed whoever was next to her and took deep breaths until everything steadied. Her breathing slowed and she found herself wrapped in darkness. Her sight was gone, that was her sacrifice to the being who brought her back to life. “Juno?” she heard a familiar voice next to her. She could hear the disbelief in her voice, how her hand carefully took hold of Juno’s. “Is this real? You were... how is this happening?” Juno squeezed her hand and moved in her direction, holding out her other hand. It was difficult to speak, but it would not be difficult to show that she was not a trick. “Your eyes...” Rae grabbed her other hand and placed it on her cheek. “Here...” Juno croaked out, pressing her forehead to Rae’s and kissing her cheek. “You were dead, Jun. You were... you were gone for so long.” Rae whispered, kissing Juno’s lips softly. “And we won... because of what you did... we won this battle.” she ran her hands through Juno’s hair and cupped her cheeks. Juno leaned into her hands before taking into a deep breath. “It’s far from over.”

Eye Opening

The chemicals struck her directly in the eyes, splattering against her skin. She screamed loudly, pain searing through her skin, feeling as if her face was being burned by a thousand suns, and her eyes had daggers being slowly slid into them. She would’ve rubbed the liquid away, but someone yelled at her and held her hands down, telling her something she couldn’t comprehend in this exact moment. She dropped down to her knees, someone dialing up 9-1-1. They spoke to her until the ambulance arrived, pulling her over to the eyewash station, but it didn’t seem to stop it. And it seemed like an eternity but they arrived, Juno being set onto a gurney and driven to the hospital. The sirens blared in her ears along with the voice’s. Something cold was set on her eyes but the pain only grew worse. She assumed her slowly blurring vision was from the things used to clean her eyes, so rather than get sick from it, she squeezed her eyes shut, reaching up to try and rub it away. Her hands were held down once again and she tried to rub it off on the pillow next to her. No luck.

She didn’t even know they were at the hospital until a doctor spoke to her and she saw them through even worse blurred vision. Did she pass out on the ride over? Or had they driven that fast? The doctor spoke to her once again and she looked up at their face. She couldn’t even make out their facial features, maybe if she– there was a snapping at her ears, one that pulled her back into all the noise and all the pain. “Hello… hey, ma’am, I need you to stay with me.” they called to her, their voice calm despite the shit situation currently at hand.

“I’m… my name is Juno.”

“Juno…?” they were waiting for her last name and while they waited they murmured something to the nurse next to them, about getting an ID. “Ma’am.”

“Edwards… Juno Edwards.” gods she sounded half in the bag, like she was half dead. Before she got a response from the doctor, something pricked her arm and she was asleep again, but not from pain this time.

When she woke next, she was in a comfortable bed, heavy blankets covering her. Someone’s head was on her hip and their hand tightly held hers. Despite the fact that her eyes were very much open, she was met with a solid black wall. No light, no color, no faces to recognize or to smile at. She felt her heart speed up in her chest and her breath grew rapid. Her head was spinning and was filled with an excessive beating, no doubt from a machine in the room. She kicked about and grabbed the person’s hand tightly, them jerking awake and cursing at how tight her grip was on their hand. But they stood and placed their hands on her shoulders, trying to calm her.

“Juno, hey, calm down. Juno, you’re okay. You’re still in the hospital…” they gently ran their fingers through her hair and Juno pulled away, not even knowing exactly where they were.

“Who are you?” she gasped out, reaching out to their face. “Why can’t I see you?”

There was a pause from the other person and multiple swears flying out of their mouth, “You can’t see me? At all?” Tears grew in Juno’s eyes as she shook her head back and forth.

“Are my eyes just wrapped? Please, tell me that’s what’s going on right now…” she pleaded, her voice raspy and tired. “What happened?” she whispered as tears slid down her cheeks and the individual took her hand once again. “Am I blind?” there was a pause, then a heavy sigh.

“Yeah…” they mumbled, rubbing their thumb against her hand. “The doctors said they wouldn’t know until you woke up and…” she heard the shrug of clothing. “I am so sorry, Juno.”

“Was it from the chemicals? I thought… they got it all out.” she reached up and touched her skin, feeling nothing when her fingers connected with flesh.

“Your nerves around your eyes are shot, Jun… you were splashed with fucking acidic chemical… your skin is fine though, Liz has been using her and Sori’s new tech to heal it faster… they even got you the best room in the whole hospital. It’s nice than my apartment. There’s like a table and people can bring you food and man, I would live here. Liz fought like hell to get you here.”

“How’s she?”

“Guilty. She uh… is taking it pretty hard… but that guy from the garage has actually helped her through it… surprisingly.”

“Good, she shouldn’t take it so hard and she needs someone who isn’t you to help her through it. I need to talk to her… this isn’t her fault…” she paused and sighed. “How’s my face look?” Juno asked, feeling around her skin. It wasn’t that raw and no one stopped her from touching it so it must’ve healed well. “Pretty bad ass, to be honest.”

“Ah.. and I’m guessing this is Rei?” she gave a small smile and the other person blew air out their lips in surprise.

“Whaaaa– uh, how’d you know?”

“How you talked so protectively about Liz. The way you say ass… you always drag out the “a”… and it’s not creepy that I know that because you say it around my students all the time.” Juno snorted and Rei made an upset noise, no doubt with a eyeroll.

“They mock me?”

“They just… yeah.. they do.” the two laughed and Rae leaned her head on Juno’s shoulder.

“It’s nice to see that you’re smiling…”

“I always smile, Rei.”

“Helene and I were worried that if you… ended up blind…” she trailed off and Juno scoffed.

“I’d stop smiling?.” Juno said, awaiting Rei’s response. But she only nodded and remained silent. “Hellooo~” she called, waving her hand around. “I can’t see your gestures or anything so please, vocalize.”

“Oh, shit, yeah!”  the two chuckled and Rei took in a deep breath. “Yeah… we were worried, you nerd. Your students sent a lot of flowers…” Rei chuckled and held one to Juno’s nose. “Smell it.”

“Oh jeez, crazy.” she took hold of the stem and took a whiff. “A… flower?” “Aw man, I was hoping you’d be all Daredevil and name the type and gender of the flower.”

“Can you even do that?” she handed the flower back and heard it drop into a pot.

“Nope!” Juno could hear the grin in Rei’s voice then was surprised with a large hug. “I’m so glad you’re okay, Juno. I don’t know how I’d function without you.”

“Poorly. You forget to shower sometimes…” she joked and Rei pulled back, quickly wiping tears from her face, sniffling softly. “Wow, I cannot believe I got you to cry.”

“Oh, shut up…” she sat there for a few moments before sighing. “You’re my best friend, you know… and I have to go now, but I’ll be back tomorrow. All day. With cake and board games and shit.”

“You’ll get in trouuuuble~” Juno sang, exhaustion washing over her when her friend said she was leaving. “But you don’t have to come in tomorrow… it’s a Sunday and you get way too busy. It’s okay.”

“Fuck that, people can wait, you’re what’s important Juno.”

“They need your crazy amount of charm. Come on Monday, if I’m still here. That’s a slowish day.”

“Okay…” Rei leaned in and kissed her forehead. “See you Monday, Juno. Love you lots.”

“Love you lots.” she waited until Rei was fully gone before she let her emotions break down. She wanted to scream and break things, but settled for crying. She buried her face in her pillow and did not hold back…. she let herself feel broken. Eventually she dozed off on a fully soaked pillow.

Sunday came quickly and for nearly most of the morning Juno had tests run and was walked around by nurses. Boring all in all and she slightly regretted not telling Rei to come and visit. It would’ve been nice to have someone make her smile and tell everyone else to fuck off when she just wanted to be left alone. She didn’t have the heart to tell people that who were only helping. Food was left in her room and carted out, untouched and despite the nice facilities, Juno stayed her room. She stayed under the heavy weight of the blankets, an excuse to stay in bed. She cried occasionally, begging and pleading for her eyes to give her sight again. Just once, so she could see a sunrise or a sunset… or that beautiful detective’s face. She pressed her hands to her face and let it out again, her hands wet in a matter of seconds.

Someone cleared their throat awkwardly and she froze, quickly wiping her eyes and sitting up, out from beneath the blankets. “Yes?” she asked, blankly staring in… some direction. Someone walked forward and asked,

“You alright?” a familiar voice asked, and Juno flushed deeply, knowing exactly who it was.

“Oh, uhm…” she wiped her cheeks once more and took in a deep breath, smiling softly. “Yeah… yeah, I am…” she mumbled, feeling naked, and embarrassed, that she had seen her crying. “Detective Morelli, right?”

“Yeah, but you can call me Rae.” she seemed to hesitate in where she was standing, unsure of whether to walk in and sit down or stay where she was. But Juno motioned for her to come forward and sit in the seat next to her.

“I don’t bite… I don’t even know where you are.” she laughed softly and how how her nose got stuffed up after she cried. Her voice sounded so weird. She wanted to ask how she knew she was here, but no matter how she worded it in her head, it sounded incredibly rude.

“Your friend Rei told me, in case you were wondering.” she answered, sitting in the chair next to her bed. “She said she knew who I was because you talked about me a lot.” Rae added, a small smile in her voice, causing Juno flush an even deeper shade of red.

“Uh…” she was going to deny it, say Rei was crazy, but those thoughts were replaced with a genuine smile. She dropped her head into her hands and nodded, groaning softly. “There’s no point in denying it.” she leaned her head back against the pillows and looked in whatever direction she believed Rae was and smiled more. “She would get annoyed because I’d always talk about how attractive your voice and eyes were…” she mumbled, feeling no shame in telling her. She didn’t see her facial expression, so there would be nothing to discourage Juno. “That’s why I called you a lot and drove up my phone bill… I like hearing your voice.”

“Putting it all out on the table, huh?” Rae replied, Juno nodding and shrugging.

“Despite the fact that I’m blind, I guess I could say this is… eye opening?” she laughed and ran a hand through her hair. “Even though it is pretty depressing.” she faked a laugh and felt the lump in her throat rise. Jesus, at least when she could see, see could hide her emotions. She cleared her throat and tried to shake the feeling off. “But… thank you for coming to see me.” she smiled and rubbed her forehead, trying to keep from showing any pain. “You don’t have to stay, there’s not much to do here… it’s probably really really boring so…” she just wanted her to leave so she wouldn’t break down and cry in front of a very attractive woman. Rather than hearing a body move from the seat it was in, a calloused hand gently took hold of hers. There was a silence before she felt wetness slide down her cheeks. She covered her eyes with her one hand and squeezed Rae’s with her other one. Rae’s thumb gently ran across her skin and she placed her other hand underneath.

“It’s alright…” she held her hand tightly and Juno took in a deep breath, slowly calming herself. Rae bit her bottom lip and scooted closer to the woman and squeezed her hand. “So, I’m going to tell something you can’t tell anyone about.”

“Oooh~” Juno’s voice still sounded cheery, despite everything that had happened, but it was hollow. “Secrets… do tell.”

“I found out that my partner, Scott Kings, you met him,” Juno nodded and Rae smiled. “Well I pretty much found out he was into bondage the worst way possible…”

“Oh no!” Juno smiled and laughed, turning herself to face Rae’s voice, raising her eyebrow as Rae told the full story of how for a few days she couldn’t look at her partner without seeing what she walked into. They laughed about it and Juno even forgot about everything, being able to see everything in her descriptions. They spoke for a number of hours, holding each other's’ hands, Juno telling how and why she opened her bar, Rae about her detective work and a few cases she was working on. When Juno’s stomach rumbled, Rae paused.

“Hungry?”

“I can survive.” Juno replied, waving her comment off. Rae shook her head and stood.

“You know what? I will be right back. Give me an hour, hour and a half. I will be back with the dinner of your life.” Rae stated, gently kissing Juno’s hand before speed walking off. She waited five minutes before she is scrambled for her bathroom, accidentally slamming into several things. She eventually made it and grabbed the brush the nurses put on the sink and ran it through her hair before braiding the large chunks of her hair. It was like muscle memory, and was just as neat as it always was when she placed it back into a bun. She would’ve splashed cold water against her face but… not yet.

When she went back to her bed, she was much more careful, only hitting her hip on the edge of a table once. She felt gross in the hospital gown but there was nothing she could do about it. Luckily Rei did drop off a bra so she put that on, then waited. And it was a surprisingly shorter wait than she thought. Maybe she just took longer than she thought she did to do her hair. Rae came in with what sounded like maybe one other nurse and they set the items they carried onto the table before leaving. Rae called out her thanks then took in a deep breath.

“So… that hospital gown looks really uncomfortable… is it?” Rae asked, sounding as if she were rifling through a bag. Juno nodded and smiled in response. “I brought sweatpants and a hoodie… if you want it that is, they should fit you fine.” she went over to Juno and handed her clothing that felt incredibly soft, Juno smiling widely.

“Thank you… really… these are super scratch and… mind if I change? It’s a closed room and I’m pretty sure I already have a billion bruises from walking to the bathroom, so I’m just gonna do it here… if that’s okay.”

“Uh… totally. I’ll just turn my back and set the table.” Juno waited until she heard the clinking of plates and pulled on the clothing, taking in a deep breath. Her clothes smelled good, the food even better.

“Smells good.” Juno said, Rae coming over and taking her hand. “You cooked everything?”

“Yeah. Some of it’s leftovers because I wasn’t going to leave you alone for three hours. But I promise, it’s all still the best.” Juno sat down in a seat and Rae was next to her. She placed one of each food on her plate, the both of them eating, Juno constantly telling her how good the food was.

“You should be a chef, I mean seriously…” she stated when they finished, Juno leaning back and placing her hands over her stomach with a wide smile. “Not being able to see what it was was extremely entertaining too.” Juno and Rae both chuckled and Rae stretched.

“You… did you know I play guitar?”

“I did not!” Juno sat up and leaned forward, raising her eyebrow high. “Did you…”

“I brought one.” Juno heard the smile in Rae’s voice and clapped her hands together.

“I want to hear as many songs as I can… please… if it’s okay with you.” Juno scooted her chair closer to Rae and leaned her chin in her hands. Rae laughed softly and leaned over, picking up a guitar case and pulling out her instrument. She strummed a few chords before she began playing, strumming away and singing the song Reminder by Mumford and Sons. Juno was captivated by it, completely taken by her voice and the passion she put into the music. She was sad when it ended, but loved it without any doubts. She softly clapped and smiled.

“You liked it?” Rae asked soflty, setting the guitar to the side.

“Of course… your voice is so gorgeous… I just cannot get over.” Juno added, tilting her head to the side. “I really appreciate you playing for me and for making me dinner and just… making my day even better.” she took in a deep breath and scratched her chin. “What time is it?” she asked, Rae picking up her phone and glancing at it.

“Nine… oh, eleven-thirty. You tired?”

“Food coma.”

“Delicious food tends to do that to you.” Rae chuckled, leaning into Juno.

“It’s a little late do you uh…” Juno felt her cheeks heating up slowly and she chuckled softly to herself. “You wanna sleep here? The bed is pretty big and surprisingly really comfortable. The heavy blankets are nice too.” she began to slowly hide her face behind her hand, Rae snorting and taking her hand in her own.

“Sure…” she smiled and Juno smiled. She stood and smoothed out her sweater, dropping down onto the bed (it luckily wasn’t that hard to find after she stubbed her toe against it) and covered herself in blankets. Rae followed and laid next to Juno, it almost being instinctual for Juno to wrap an arm around her. When she did so, she apologized and recoiled but Rae shrugged and turned towards her.

“I’m a cuddler… so you have that to look forward to.”
