A silly little test animation from the past semester to practice some walk cycle basics ✨

Why does Garnet fight the way she does?
Garnet’s fighting style in “Stronger Than You” always struck me as fairly unique compared to everything we’d seen from her previously, and just struck me as to possibly why on my nth rewatch:
Up until now, Garnet was always the Big Gem in the Crystal Gems, the heavy hitter, our fighter with her fists (compare with Amethyst’s scrap battle style and Pearl’s more graceful, ballet-based one.) If a fight was hard, she’d be there to pummel the opponent or be the one to hold them down unless Amethyst already had her whip wrapped around them.
She was our ace, to use Haikyuu terms.
And then we get to Stronger Than You. Before the song, we see her terrifyingly torn apart, her disparate gems so small on their own and desperately looking for each other. She’s facing off against an enemy that is not only bigger than she is, something we’ve seen before, but has all her wits about her, unlike the poor corrupted gems on Earth.
She has to fight smart, which means we get to see what kind of technique not only she uses, but Ruby was trained in.
Which brings me to the specific moment in the song that always had me tilt my head a little bit. About 0:23 into the song we get “I can see you hate the way we intermingle,” in the lyrics as Garnet throws three kicks at Jasper, one of which she does from atop Jasper’s punching arm.
That always seemed very Black Widow of her (a smaller fighter who takes advantage of her lithe body to get on top of and around opponents) rather than, say Captain America (technical heavy-hitter punches, mostly.) Especially the fact that larger fighters don’t usually think to use opponents’ arms as springboards.
But then. Garnet is Ruby, and Ruby, seperate from Garnet, is tiny. She can fuse to make bigger Rubies, but as an individual combat gem, she is visually smaller than what seems like most other gems. I would say Sapphire contributes a lot of the creativity and flowy-ness of the fight, but Ruby is the fighter between the two.
Ruby, after five millenia of being Garnet, would be used to her long legs for kicking. But she still has the creativity and training of a much smaller gem, which is why we see Garnet climbing and jumping off of Jasper like she’s a particularly angry jungle gym.
tl;dr: Garnet climbs and jumps on Jasper’s arm in “Stronger Than You” bc Ruby is a tiny fighter and uses her training, along with Sapphire’s intelligence and creativity, to beat a smart combatant into the ground (literally.)
Happy birthday Johnny ✨
The only problematic thing about Fresno nightcrawlers is that they’d probably just try on all your pants without asking
