I used to like Djokovic. Back in 2008, he was an endearing up-and-comer, impersonating other players and generally being a goof. The years progressed, his star rising and his No. 1 position slowly seemed to go to his head. Every now and again, he’d say something a little controversial, exhibit some form of arrogance or entitlement and I’d feel the need to defend it, still seeing the endearing goof from 2008. He’d get boo’d at Grand Slams and I would judge the crowds.
This year, all bets are off.
You can’t play it fast and loose during a global pandemic and put the lives of countless others at risk with an “Whoopsie Daisy” when things go wrong. When the ATP and WTA are rumoured to become one body, you can’t throw your toys out of the pram, question if women will be paid the same as men and decide you’ll join or help create your own All Boys Club in protest.
Stan Nadal. Stan Federer. Stan Murray. Stan anyone who isn’t an ignorant misogynist.
