Stargate Drabbles: Prompt #45: Mist
The heat had been relentless all day in the rainforest climate on the planet. Sweat clung to their BDUs and had them drenched to the bone before they were even a klick away from the gate. Sam felt disgusting. They weren’t even halfway to the ruins detected by the UAV yet, and she was already dreaming of a cold shower.
Daniel’s excited voice popped her fantasy bubble, and when she looked up, she saw him pointing to what looked to be a cave entrance in the side of a steep rock face. The Colonel and Teal’c took point as they all headed inside to check it out.
There was an instant temperature change that had Sam sighing with relief as they walked further into the cave. And it was only a little further when the rock tunnel opened up into a huge cavern.
Teal’c called out a warning as a cool mist was released from the edges of the cavern entrance and completely covered them. They froze. It was too late to run, they were already exposed. So they waited to feel something, anything that would cause concern.
But after a long moment there was nothing, and when Sam met the Colonel’s eyes questioningly, he shrugged in response. The mist continued to fill the huge room, cooling it immensely. Daniel mentioned resting there for awhile before exploring any further and no one dared to argue. Sam unclipped her P90 and heads twisted in her direction. “Is this okay sir?”
Her Colonel’s eyebrows rose a bit but he nodded and gave Teal’c a look to keep an eye out for just a little longer before they followed suit.
She knew it wasn’t exactly protocol until the cavern was cleared, but she was still so hot. So she went for her tac vest next. As she unclipped it, Daniel shrugged and went after his own. When she slid it to the ground with a smile and a sigh, Daniel eyes went wide and all three of them spun away from her.
“Whoa! Umm, Carter?” The Colonel cleared his throat uncomfortably, his hands grabbing the top of his head.
What were they doing? She still had her t-shirt on for God’s sakes. That’s when she looked down and saw it. With a yelp, she turned around, pulling the edges of her t-shirt over the middle.
Her t-shirt and sports bra had become translucent where the sweat had been the worst, under the vest. “Oh my God,” she muttered, trying to think of something to say. “Umm, sir, the mist must have some sort of properties in it that react...”
“Carter!”
Sam cringed and turned her head, “Yes sir?”
Still facing away, his hands went into the air. “How about you just grab a spare shirt from your pack for now and you can explain later huh?” He pointed over to a dark corner to his left as he turned to walk in the direction. “I’ll be over there...checking out...something.”
She heard him mumbling something about someone trying to kill him, and bit her lip to stifle a laugh. “Yes sir.”
