Unpopular opinion about Maya Vie (I know this is looking back a ways)

I can't remember how fandom felt about her so I'm not sure if my opinion is unpopular 😁.

Here's some of my opinions

Maya wasn't innocent. She was complicit in what MW did. She and others knew it was wrong and all they did was maintain neutrality. That's before the events of season 2. Of course, after we see her rebel and help the 48 +Bellamy to do what's right. But she wasn't innocent.

Maya needed to die. Maya's death symbolised the collateral damage, the good that dies when difficult choices like these are made. She symbolises the price Clarke paid.

This isn't on your list of fic questions, but I was hoping you might like this one: How much research did you put into Discovery both before and during writing it? Did it require a lot of playthroughs to get the details how you wanted them, or was a lot of it from your own memory?

Hey, so I started answering this and then the whole thing was accidentally erased mid-reply.  So let me try re-composing.

I’d only done two complete playthroughs of ME1 at the time I wrote Discovery.  The first was my introduction to the trilogy.  The second was to record everything in detail.  I have something like five hundred video clips from it, including multiple takes of certain convos etc.  That gave me a great resource to reference as needed without having to replay over and over.  (Not that it’s a bad thing!  I replay games like crazy.  But when you’re doing it specifically for a fic, it’s more like work... and it distracts from the actual writing)

The wiki is also a godsend for details I couldn’t remember and codices I never read.  I still consult it constantly when writing about anything ME-related. 

I have a degree in astrophysics and now work in the aerospace industry, and while I’m perfectly ok with being unrealistic/non-scientific when it serves the story better (and because it’s space opera, not hard SF), that personal expertise did help immensely for adding immersion to the fic.  (Though it’s also a rabbit hole sometimes.  There is a paragraph in Labyrinth I spent an afternoon researching inputs and doing math to figure out the probable solar incidence on a planet to describe the light levels accurately.  That was non-productive.)

In other research, I read a hell of a lot about relevant real-world topics, like the experiences of people fighting in wars or simply living through them, various psychological conditions (both medical and experiential), and so forth.  I also just kind of read a lot of non-fiction in general, and it’s funny to me how often odd pieces of information become interesting background or scene ideas for fics.  None of this is to say that I believe Discovery to have rigorous realism (it doesn’t, that’s not really the point of the story).  But it informed the story to make it feel real.  And I did try my best to be faithful to realistic portrayals of things like PTSD.

10/10 would recommend getting fully invested! It’s all on Youtube! If you do, you should try campaign 2 first. The video and audio quality is better and you get to see the characters from the beginning of their journey. I swear I’m obsessed with more things about this show than just ships haha but right now, both my ships are getting fed so well. But I mean, it’s improvisation and it’s better quality storytelling than almost anything I’ve seen on television. 

I actually got into the show, because someone I followed was posting a bunch of really sad Vaxleth gifs when campaign one ended and now I want to go and look for that gifset.

Choices are made on Neverland. Neverland smut written for @profdanglaisstuff

3. and 4. CS Prompts and Drabbles [almost 6300 words, incomplete, ratings vary by chapter] and Make Me Look Good [almost 2800 words, one shot, rated G] are tied with 68 kudos.

CS Prompts and Drabbles are exactly what they sound like. MMLG was a little Christmas one shot I wrote inspired by one of my kids favorite Christmas movies.

CS Secret Santa gift for @teeandsnowflakes. The Swan-Jones family is decorating for Christmas when a mystery presents itself. Where did all the presents come from? And who left them?

4. Arise, My Love [43 kudos, 2200 words, rated M]

This was originally written for @thisonesatellite birthday last fall, but the complete story, including this part, will be published as part of the CS Supernatural Summer this year. I’m nearly done writing it and it will begin dropping on June 3. 

This particular part is vampire smut where Killian turns Emma.
