Jason had been much shorter then. He’d had to look up at the woman as he dodged out of the way of her hammer. They had taunted and teased back and forth as they took turns chasing each other about the room while Batman and the Joker did the same above them on the rafters.
Harley wasn’t new, but he was. And she had noticed. She wasn’t stupid, she had picked up on the differences between him and the last bird. That should have been his first clue. Because he hadn’t understood. Why had she let the Joker mess with her like that? Why had she let him break her?
At some point, it became less like they were fighting and more like they were simply playing, trying to see who could outdo the other. Something Batman quickly put a stop to once he had finished with the Joker.
But still, Jason lingered, sitting on a cardboard box, talking with her as he waited for the police to arrive to cart her away. She didn’t make any sense, but… she wasn’t so bad. He still didn’t get it, how the clown could have made her like him.
Now though, looking back… he understands.
