Jung Taekwoon’s stay at the festival after-party was short, to say the least.
He’d said his thanks to the staff and had taken selcas for Instagram (and a few to give to Hakyeon in private, of course) and after saying goodbye to Eunji, he had climbed into the car his manager had gotten for him and headed back to the hotel.
His alcohol tolerance hadn’t gotten any better, but he could at least have a few sips every now and again. As he lay in his bed, he checked his social media, replied to tweets from fans. His thoughts constantly flit to Hakyeon, and he feels a bit worried at the lack of cutesy text messages.
j.taekwoon: dearest, I just got home from the music festival after-party. Are you okay? Are the kids keeping you busy?
Instead of the reply he was expecting however, Hakyeon had chosen to call him.
Surprised, Taekwoon answered the call.
“Hey baby,” Hakyeon whispered, sounding breathless. “How was the after-party?”
Taekwoon breathed a sigh of relief. It didn’t sound like the house was on fire, and Hakyeon just sounded tired. He wanted to be there, next to his husband, carding his fingers through Hakyeon’s soft hair. “It was all right. Some of the other artists at the after party were asking when I would introduce you.”
There was a pause, and Hakyeon replied, “Well...you could invite me to one of your lives sometime, you know?”
Taekwoon licked his bottom lip before answering, feeling especially guilty. “Yeah...I really should. Sorry, Yeonnie...I just...just get so nervous, imagining you’re there, watching.”
Hakyeon’s tone was questioning now, as he paced across their bedroom. “Is that why you prefer me watching a broadcast?”
“Ah...yeah. Whenever my dongsaengs ask me to bring you along, I usually screw up practice for a good half-hour.” Remembering those times made Taekwoon chuckle from embarrassment but he had shared it anyway because he thought it would make Hakyeon laugh, or even swoon. He loved little moments like that, but instead Taekwoon heard silence. “Yeonnie? Are you there?”
His husband sounded a little tense, Taekwoon thought. “Yeah...just...just stressed. And I miss you. The kids miss you, too. What time are you coming home?”
“Soon. I miss you too. I miss the kids, so much. Manager-nim said we’d be checking out around noon. If there isn’t any traffic I should be back by four in the afternoon.” Taekwoon yawned.
“All right. Sleep well, okay? I love you.” Hakyeon’s voice sounded much more relaxed and warm, and that filled Taekwoon’s heart with reassurance like no other. He was just over thinking it after all.
“I love you too, Yeonnie. Goodnight.” He was about to end the call when Hakyeon spoke again.
“....are, right?”
Taekwoon put the phone back to his ear. “I’m sorry dear, what did you say?”
Hakyeon repeated his words, a yawn slipping out halfway through. “You know I don’t...share, right?”
The music producer was seriously puzzled, now. “Yes. And neither do I.”
“And you know you can tell me anything, right?”
Taekwoon wondered where all this was going. “Yes, of course. Did anything happen while I was away?”
There was a long pause, before Hakyeon’s voice was back on the line. “Ah, no, nothing happened...not really. I’ll see you at home, Woonie.” Hakyeon had ended the call after that, and suddenly the feeling of dread was back, anxiety pooling in Jung Taekwoon’s stomach. What was wrong with his husband?
“You know...that I don’t share, right?”
Taekwoon knew more than anyone that Hakyeon could be possessive of him, especially when they had started being more exclusive. He also remembered how hard Hakyeon was breathing when Taekwoon had grabbed the nape of Hakyeon’s neck, bringing their foreheads together and had murmured, “Neither do I.”
Over the years it had become their secret way of admitting when they were jealous, the words whispered in private. And each time those words fell from Hakyeon’s lips, Taekwoon would reassure him, over and over.
He wondered what it could have been that triggered his husband, after so long. The music producer put his phone down, next to the red box and Taekwoon stared at it for what seemed to be an eternity. Hopefully they could talk about it, whatever was bothering Hakyeon, so Taekwoon could hold him and promise that there was only room in his heart for Hakyeon.
Maybe this time, the words were simply not enough.
Taekwoon opened the red box again, and stared at the pretty, white leather collar inside. He'd had it engraved with a large, silver N, and he shivered in anticipation.
" Wait for me, baby." Taekwoon thought, as he ran a long finger over the smooth, soft leather. "Just a little more...and then I'll take care of you."

Tablet in hand, Hongbin wandered to their parents’ bedroom. He had just finished bathing Hyuk, his hands still moist from bathwater and leaving rainbows on the tablet screen, and gone up only to call Hakyeon to tuck them all to bed.
As he neared the door to the master’s bedroom, however, he heard a dull rhythmic thudding and his father’s grunts and his fist paused from knocking. Instead, he carefully turned the knob, pushing the door open by a crack and peeking in.
Hakyeon was kneeling on their wide bed, sheets immaculately made except for the area around his knees where a white shirt was laid out. Hongbin recognized a red blotch on its chest area, where he had wiped off the stain of cherry gum from his lips, disappearing only when Hakyeon’s fist buries into it, crumpling the shirt and the sheets around it. Just when he thought it couldn’t get any worse, he hears a strangled sob leave Hakyeon’s throat and it hits him - his father, the cheerful one, was hitting that stain and crying.
Somehow that made Hongbin want to cry, too. He felt something clutch at his chest, a sharp pinprick of pain accompanied by a cloying sort of dread he didn’t quite understand, and that was what made him close the door quietly and back away. He didn’t know at the time, what it was called. He wasn’t old enough to put a name on it, but somehow he knew that his father was suffering because of the stain he’d made on his other father’s shirt, because of him. It was years before he found that what he was feeling was “guilt”.
He was about to duck inside his room when Ken’s door opened, the boy heading downstairs for the kitchen. Ken noticed his younger brother’s distraught face, and pulled him aside murmuring, “Bin-ah, are you okay?”
Hongbin’s first instinct was to say “Yeah, totally fine!”, and the words were almost out of his lips when he heard the dull thud of fist on mattress again, or perhaps he had imagined it because Ken didn’t seem to hear it. His brother was looking at him with growing concern, and the guilt squeezed at his chest so much that he couldn’t breathe, his voice coming out in a whimper. “Hyung...I think...I think I did something wrong.”
Ken's first instinct was to take his hand and go to their father, but the way Hongbin fidgetted nervously, lips trembling, eyes welling up with tears--Ken knew his brother needed him more right now. “Okay. Lemme get some water first.”
The two children went downstairs and got the water bottles that their parents left on the lowest shelf of the refrigerator and snuck back upstairs--along with a few packets of cookies from the pantry. As Hongbin closed Ken's bedroom door behind him, he thought that he was lucky for having Ken as a big brother, despite all the pranks he liked to pull.

“Baby, I’m sorry I’m going to be late. Looks like manager-nim is hell-bent on giving me more people to work with. Make it up to you tonight, I promise.”
In the short respite before he was whisked away to another meeting, Taekwoon had managed to tap a message to Hakyeon, hitting send and stuffing his phone into his pocket, failing to notice the dead signal bar.
It was already early evening when Taekwoon arrived home. Missing his family and worried about his husband, he had wanted to leave as soon as possible but his manager had found potential collaborating artists overnight and asked him to meet with them. He had considered killing his manager, but disposing of the body meant that it would take even longer to see his family, so instead he settled for terrorizing his manager with ridiculous requests, including latte runs for the entire staff. There were some things about this life he would gladly give up, if it meant that he was able to drop everything and run to Hakyeon whenever the mood struck him.
Still, he was glad to meet more people from the same industry--and it made Taekwoon smile inwardly when he caught any of the artists looking at his wedding ring. Considering how long it had taken for Hakyeon to design their wedding rings, there was always a little swell of pride in his heart whenever anyone looked at it for too long.
It seemed like an eternity, but at last Taekwoon was dropped off in front of the two-story house that he shared with his husband and their children. Arriving at their house in the evenings was always relaxing for Taekwoon, listening to the sound of crickets and watching his neighbors leisurely pass by. As he drew closer to the front door, Taekwoon felt the fatigue and exhaustion of the music festival creep on him at last. He reached into his jeans pocket for his house keys and entered the front hall of the Cha-Jung household.
He never expected he’d have to be prepared for the storm known as Cha Hakyeon.
-----------------------------------
“Goodnight, Hyogie. I love you, my little devil.” Hakyeon nearly laughed when Hyuk giggled in his sleep. When he and the baby were alone, Hyuk was surprisingly cooperative, or perhaps the baby also sensed that Hakyeon was tense and anxious, and decided to give him a break. After Hongbin had bathed Hyuk, he let Hakyeon carry him without complaint, and had even pressed a wet kiss onto his nose, which made the dance instructor smile. It was times like these that made him feel like a real mother to their youngest boy, even if he secretly felt like the child harbored an increasing dislike of him.
He remembered confiding his feelings to Taekwoon, and how his husband had pressed his lips to Hakyeon’s brown hair and said softly, “Wasn’t I the same way?” Hakyeon had shaken his head. “At least you just kept quiet, Hyogie just doesn’t like it when I touch him.” And yet for all of his thoughts and feelings, there were times when their youngest boy did show him affection--such as now.
Gingerly, he laid his youngest child down in his crib and placed Hyuk’s favorite stuffed animals on either side of his head--a large stuffed lion and a stuffed giraffe. When he was like this, silent and Hyuk’s dark eyes were warm with sleep, Hakyeon thought that their youngest baby looked a lot like Taekwoon. This was why he’d just wanted to hold the boy longer, but it was evident that the personality he had inherited could have been from the surrogate.
Or that was what he liked to think, anyway. The child seemed to have a fierce, mischievous personality behind his pretty eyes and wide, gummy smile.
As much as he would have loved to stay until Hyuk was fast asleep, he had three more children to tuck into bed. He checked if the baby monitor was turned on (it was) and carefully, he turned the dimmer switch until the room was no longer starkly white, but a gentle midnight blue mixed with purple around the edges and with great care, he closed the door.
He went to the door across the baby room and peered inside, and saw Hongbin nestled into the covers, breathing deeply, eyes closed though his tablet was in his hands, Park Hyo Shin belting his lungs out in its screen. Hakyeon gently pried the gadget away from the child’s hand and placed it on Hongbin’s nightstand, next to their pretty flower boy’s favorite photo—one where he was holding baby Hyuk for the first time, Ken and Wonshik prodding at the baby from behind.
Hakyeon kissed the top of Hongbin’s soft curls and murmured, “Goodnight, sweetheart. Next time you want to pretend you’re asleep, breathe deeper.” Hongbin’s eyes opened, dark eyes glittering in the dim light and staring up at him, before he buried his face into his pillow and didn’t move again. “I love you, my handsome little doctor.” Hakyeon patted his head and went to the bathroom that Hongbin and Wonshik’s room shared, closing the door behind him.
Cha-Jung Wonshik, on the other hand was sprawled out on his bed, spread-eagled, covers thrown to the floor. Hakyeon sighed—not even the bed rail Taekwoon had installed stopped Wonshik from wriggling around in his sleep, looking at how one of Wonshik’s toes had been bruised, once again. He carefully carried his son, grunting with the effort—Wonshik was getting heavier by the day, but Hakyeon had muscles built over years of dancing, despite his size—and tucked him in properly, adjusting the bed rail a bit higher, so that it wouldn’t hit Wonshik’s toes so often.
Hakyeon wasn’t surprised when Wonshik didn’t even stir; that child could sleep through an earthquake and just wake up hungry for breakfast. “I love you, my sweet little boy,” he said softly, pressing a kiss onto Wonshik’s brow before exiting into the hallway, closing the door behind him. He entered the door on his right, which was Ken’s room, in between Wonshik’s and the master bedroom.
Ken had been eating before bed again, if the bottles and empty cookie packets on his bedside table were any clue. Their eldest child was fast asleep, bloated stomach exposed with his shirt hitched up to ribs. Hakyeon chuckled softly as he pulled Ken’s shirt down, adjusting his blanket so it covered up to his shoulders.
It tugged at his heartstrings, making his eyes sting and a sigh escape his lips. Before they had three more children, Taekwoon and Hakyeon’s world revolved around work, each other, and Ken. It made the dance instructor feel a bit guilty really, and more sad than he could admit, not being able to spend as much time as they used to with their eldest child, bordering on neglect. Despite seeing him everyday, he missed their eldest son. He made a mental note to make time for Ken more often, and pressed a kiss onto Ken’s nose, whispering, “Goodnight, my little artist. I love you.”
As Hakyeon closed Ken’s door behind him, he heard the familiar hum of a car, the door slamming close, and then the metallic shriek of the gate. He knew immediately that his husband was back, probably at the front door now, fumbling for his keys. He was nervous and had to pause, his feet rooted to the spot in front of Ken’s door. It seemed like an eternity before he walked, walked through the long, lit hallway and waited at the top of the stairs, hand resting on the smooth wooden bannister.
Hakyeon was glad that their children had all gone to sleep, at least. He truly wished that they would never have to hear their parents argue, but as he went downstairs, he could feel the stress and anxiety of the entire weekend come back to him.
Hakyeon couldn’t remember a time when he didn’t hate this part of him, the part that got jealous and insecure and lashed out in anger. When they were still dating, it was this part of Hakyeon that Taekwoon didn’t like; could still remember chills running down his spine when Taekwoon had said softly, in a voice laced with darkness and irritation—“If you continue doing that, we’re through.”
Back then, the fear of losing Taekwoon had been bigger than Hakyeon’s anger. Hakyeon had been taken by surprise and replied with a choked sob, pressing himself deeper into Taekwoon’s chest, his hands clutching the taller man’s waist as if it was the only thing that could save him. He hadn’t thought of what would happen, should Taekwoon choose to leave.
I’d...fall apart, probably. Hakyeon thought. His heart was too full of Taekwoon, and if the music producer chose to cut all ties with him, Hakyeon would have to live for the rest of his life without a heart.
He knew he had to marry Taekwoon when, after a particularly bad fight, the music producer had chosen to wrap his arms around Hakyeon’s lithe form, rubbing small soothing circles onto his back, murmuring his name while pressing kisses into his hair. Assuring him that no matter what happened, Hakyeon would always be his choice, and back then, that was all he’d really needed.
As the years passed by his jealousy seemed to disappear entirely, though there were other days when Hakyeon could only try to control himself from lashing out at Minhyuk or his students in the dance studio, hiding out in the bathroom until he felt calm enough to go back to work. Deep inside, he knew that there was still some part of him that prayed that Taekwoon could soothe the storm brewing in Hakyeon’s dark, jealous heart—and that it didn’t involve leaving him, or the children. Despite himself, he hoped that this part would win, in the end.
He found himself dreading Taekwoon’s return, of what would happen when they were finally face-to-face, of what he would do. Then Hakyeon remembered the shirt, the red blotch, Taekwoon embracing that woman on national TV while he was hidden away at home, uninvited to even witness his husband’s moments of glory, and his jealous heart blackened with rage, pumping fury through his veins.
He took several deep breaths, trying to calm down--but his own rage was pulling him in deeper, the vice tightening around his heart. He wanted to hurt something, anything, but he wasn't a teenager anymore; he couldn't punch the tiles that lined the master bathroom and scream until his throat burned raw. Hakyeon was a father now, and had four little ones to think of.
The anger was blurring his vision again.
Then the doorknob clicked and turned.

A/N: Hani and Ken are the kind of friends I imagine care about each other a lot, despite both being busy with their own stuff. Reminds me of how I am with my school friends—except we’re balancing paychecks and bills now and not just club activities and other friends.
Hope you enjoy, this was actually pretty nostalgic for me.

Summary: But it was during times like these that they knew they had to take advantage of. Spending time together no matter what - that was what best friends were for, right?
He’d first spotted her as he walked towards the club rooms, sitting in their classroom, drawing. Ken had stayed a bit later than usual, trying to get more ideas for drawing (currently, he was deciding whether to draw the school mascot or maybe some cats and dogs) and he’d lost track of time in the library.
“Haningning~” he’d called out happily, one hand on his backpack, the other stuffed in his pocket. He stood at the doorway before approaching her, peeping over her shoulder at her drawing.
She’d looked up and smiled, her rich curls tumbling over one shoulder. She had been drawing a picture of a kitten, and had been drawing the whiskers on when he’d called her attention. “Hi Keningning~ you got a minute?” His smile was small and apologetic, but he said “After club—do you have time?”
Hani chose that time to grab her phone and flip through it, checking the time. “Just a little. I’ll wait for you as long as I can. Drama club was cancelled; our teacher was sick.”
---
“Ottokaji~ o-o-ottokaji~” he sang as he texted his parents of his whereabouts, that he’d be home soon. His parents trusted him with that much, though his eomma preferred that he ride home with the bus and his brothers in tow.
He loved his siblings, but he was also eager to get to know his classmates and clubmates. Finally, the last bell rang and Ken and Jin walked out of the art room together, walking down the hallway until it was time to say goodbye.
“Bye Jin!” He’d said happily as he and his friend parted ways—his house was in the southern part of town, while Ken lived with his parents in the north—but as he was walking past his classroom, he saw her, just watching the raindrops. Her hair was tied back in a half-ponytail, rich milktea-brown ringlets curling delicately past her white school blouse.
He smiled because it meant that she hadn’t forgotten, even if their school activities were different now. Hani wasn’t the kindergartener who had all the time in the world (much like Ken) and they only saw each other because they were classmates. Lunch periods and dismissal times were a whirlwind of being grabbed here and there by their mutual friends. Their method of hanging out had been through KakaoTalk, mostly.
But it was during times like these that they knew they had to take advantage of. Spending time together no matter what - that was what best friends were for, right?
“Haningning?” She turned her head and smiled, waving excitedly. “Keninging~ C’mere, look, look!” He hopped up on the school desk next to hers, and knelt on it (he was getting so tall) and together, they watched the raindrops land on their school’s plants, trees and flowers. “Pretty, isn’t it?” She whispered, as their school was lightly blanketed by rain, fog curling delicately on the edges of the trees’ dark trunks.
He nodded and excitedly reached into his backpack for the thermos he’d asked his mother to pack for him last night. “You want some of my eomma’s soup? It’s really good for days like this.” It was getting late and his parents would be more than a little worried, but it seemed to be the right thing to do.
Hani reached into her lunchbox and pulled out a zip-loc bag of cookies and smiled happily. “I asked my dad to save you some cookies, too.”
They stuck two tables together, spread out their separate lunch tablecloths and in the midst of the gently pouring rain, had an early dinner of macaroni soup and cookies, their drink bottles full of cool, refreshing water from the water fountain.
After eating, they walked outside, Hani with her transparent umbrella and Ken with his hoodie. The day was bleeding into late afternoon, and they watched the sunset together. “Thank you.” Hani said, holding onto Ken’s hand.
“Anytime, Haningning. I missed you, after all. Maybe we’ll have more free time during summer? You’d love my appa’s cooking, he makes really good ramyun.”
Hani’s eyes turned into pretty crescents, Ken thinks, as she nodded. “But after that, you need to go to my house so we can have meat!”
----
When it’s time for them to part by the crossroads, he sees the tall, stately figure of his appa and the gentle, kind figure of his eomma waiting for him. Beside them was a lady that Ken had never seen before, but she was beautiful, and they were both smiling.
Ken runs to his father and mother, hugging them tight. Hani, on the other hand runs to her mother and she is promptly squished by her mother’s welcoming arms.
“Next time,” Hakyeon and Taekwoon said together. “Tell you first before coming home late?” Ken chirps, smile wide. Hakyeon chuckles and Taekwoon lightly flicks their eldest son on the forehead. “Yes.” Taekwoon looked at Hani and waved to her, and she smiled before hiding behind her mother.
“Thanks for keeping us company, Solji-noona.”
“Think nothing of it—thanks for keeping my Hanibunny safe, Ken. Your parents tell me you’re quite the grown-up.” She patted Ken’s cheek and he grinned up at her.
“Me and Haningning are gonna be friends forever~” he declared, holding out his pinky. She did the same, and said “It’s a promise!”
And from then on, as long as they asked permission, Ken and Hani could see each other every weekend if they wanted to.

Summary:
Years after he proposed to his boyfriend (now his husband), Cha-Jung Taekwoon was a man who could say he was pretty happy with life. He had a beautiful family, a loving husband and four perfect kids, in a home big enough for all of them, built mostly by his soaring career as a music producer. He was way better off than most people and, usually, he didn't have reason to complain, but sometimes juggling all of that was....difficult.
Author’s Notes:
While I wrote most of this fic, it recalls many of the things kyaappucino and I wrote in justneofamilythings. In fact, the entire introduction is completely hers, I just copy-pasted it there XD, and then we joined forces for the ending. This was supposed to be a very short fic, but then...things happened, but I like how it turned out. I hope you would too. ❤
Celebratory fic for VIXX's 4th anniversary and Cha-Jung Household's very own little success; We're nearing 200 followers and Flu Shots has been translated to German. Y'all are awesome! Cheers! ❤

Taekwoon remembers with perfect clarity how tightly Hakyeon’s dusky fingers grip onto his fork was when he brought out the tiny box, how his breath catches in his throat.
“Taekwoonie…?”
Jung Taekwoon was a man who felt that actions spoke louder than words, and his words always sounded better when they were written down. He lifted the box and out came a long strip of paper. He’s written and rewritten the words so many times, he’d never be able to forget it, ever.
After all these years, can I still get to know you for the rest of our lives?
“Taek…” Hakyeon’s voice sounds choked up, and the tears fall for real when Taekwoon gets the ring from the box and fits it onto his boyfriend’s finger, his voice no louder than a breathy whisper.
“Will you marry me?”
-----------------------------------
It's been years since he proposed to his boyfriend (now husband), Cha-Jung Taekwoon is a man who could say he is pretty happy with life. He has a beautiful family, a loving husband and four perfect kids, in a home big enough for all of them, built mostly by his soaring career as a music producer. He is way better off than most people and, usually, he didn't have reason to complain, but sometimes juggling all of that is....difficult.
-----------------------------------
The production period of his upcoming album was in full swing. Taekwoon was almost always at the studio at the very buttcrack of dawn until ungodly hours of the night, and again the next day. He loved his job, his career, but he didn't leave so early because he wanted to. He needed to.
His husband, Hakyeon, knew this and yet he would complain every morning when he stirred from sleep, woken by Taekwoon as he was getting out of bed. "You're leaving so early again?" Hakyeon would pout, squinting up at him, and Taekwoon would bend down to kiss him, squeezing the hands clutching at his pajamas before gently, painfully prying them off.
Any longer and he would have allowed those hands to pull him back down under the sheets. Couldn't have resisted, to be honest.
"I have to, love. You know how work is," he would say, and Hakyeon would whine, kicking under the blanket like a petulant child when Taekwoon tears his hands away as Hakyeon guides them to his chest. "But you got home so late last night! Stay home today, please? I miss you."
Taekwoon would pause, breathe deeply through the nose, and kiss Hakyeon again, cupping his cheeks in his hands. "I'll make it up to you."
Usually Hakyeon would sulkily nod and bury himself under the covers, but this time he hung on to Taekwoon’s shirt, looking up at him with pleading puppy eyes. “Come home early tonight, okay? Promise?”
Placing a soft kiss on Hakyeon’s nose, he whispered, “I promise.”
It was sweet, really. He appreciated Hakyeon wanting to be with him, and he missed him too, but Taekwoon had hardly rested these past few weeks and he had to save what energy he could gather from what sleep he could get for work. Dealing with a whiny Hakyeon, and resisting the want to do exactly as his husband says, every other morning sapped that energy.
-----------------------------------
Taekwoon had to monitor every single instrument recorded, listen to the arrangement, and re-record a track if something felt off. It demanded all of his attention, but that never seemed to stop his children from calling at random times throughout the day.
The first call came just as he finished queueing the tracks he needed to listen to, his phone vibrating on his desk and flashing Ken's display picture on Facetime, his eyes closed and his thick lips pouted in a kiss. So cute. Just looking at it pulled his lips into a smile.
"A wild Dadwoon has appeared!" he heard one of his staff whisper to the others, gaining gasps and giggles, as he picked up his phone. They rarely ever saw this side of him and they were always shocked. Taekwoon had to admit, sometimes he got a kick out of it. This was not one of those times, and they retreated with squeaks and a suddenly long list of things to do as he fixed them with a withering gaze.
Taekwoon tapped the answer button as he held his phone in front of him, and Ken's face came into view, his eyes red and puffy, and his lower lip jutting out in a pout. Taekwoon's smile melted immediately. "Appa..." he sniffled.
Taekwoon unconsciously crouched forward in his seat, tense, feeling like his chest was caving in on itself. What happened? Ken was the noisiest and most expressive of his children, screaming his joy or displeasure without restraint, but he rarely ever cried. "Jaehwannie, what's wrong? Did something happen?"
Ken nodded and ducked from view. When he came up again, he held up a small can of paint, the new one Taekwoon had just bought him. "Wonshik ate my paint and now his mouth is blue!"
"What?" The mix of relief and shock washed over him and wrapped around him like a thick sludge, leaving him slow and uncomprehending. "Sorry, what?"
Ken turned the camera toward Wonshik whose lips were a bizarre shade of cobalt. "Ken-hyung told me to eat it because it says non-toxic!" Wonshik said, revealing the inside of his mouth to be blue as well--teeth, cheeks, tongue, all blue.
"I didn't!" Ken yelled somewhere in the background, tearing Wonshik's eyes away from the screen. Taekwoon heard something thud too, which he figured was his eldest stomping his foot. "I said you can eat it because it's non-toxic, I didn't say you should, you dummy!"
"I am NOT a dummy!" Wonshik retorted, slamming the phone down and leaving Taekwoon to stare at the star-painted ceiling of Ken's room as he listened to his two eldest sons argue in the background.
-----------------------------------
Taekwoon had to coordinate with a number of artists with schedules just as clogged as his and make sure the vocals were up to his standards in what time they could allot to record it--If they failed, that would mean another few days of haggling for another appointment, and Taekwoon could not deal with any more delays.
Commitment to the job was required of him and his artists, indeed of everyone who wanted get anywhere at all, which is why Taekwoon felt his head throb when he received a text message from Coach Kang-in, Hongbin’s football coach.
“Good afternoon, Cha-Jung-nim. Hongbin didn’t come to practice again today. He looked okay during class though. Does he still want to be a part of the team? I need to know for sure so we could find a replacement before the interschool competitions.”
Taekwoon took a deep breath. He pressed a button on the table, abruptly halting the music and earning a puzzled look from the artist on the other side of the window. Another button to turn on the intercom and the speakers carried his tired voice throughout the studio, “Five-minute break.”
He stood up and stepped out of the studio before the whispering started, swiping down to Hongbin’s name on Facetime, display picture smiling widely at him, eyes crinkled into crescents. It rang a few times, Taekwoon tapping his foot impatiently, before the call was picked up.
Nothing came on screen, blackness, but he could hear Hongbin giggling and a wet suckling sound, the source so close to the microphone that it overpowered all other sounds from their end. “Hyogie, gimme the tablet, that’s not for eating,” he heard Hongbin say and the screen zoomed out to reveal that the blackness had been the top of Hongbin’s head. The boy held the device an arm’s length away, flicking his head a little to get his curls out of his eyes (Taekwoon noted absently that they needed to visit a barber soon). Pudgy baby Hyogie sat on his lap, reaching for the tablet. They were both on the floor of Hongbin’s room, judging by the polished wooden floor and the plain sky blue walls. “Hold on, appa.”
Hongbin reached out to somewhere and, when he came back on screen, he was holding a pretzel as large as his face, probably bought from the nearby bakery on his way home from school, and handing it to the baby. Hyuk grabbed it with his fat little fingers and promptly started gumming on the crust. “Eomma said he’s teething. That means his teeth are growing, you know?” Hongbin explained as he turned to look at the screen back to Taekwoon, giggling. “He tried to eat eomma’s face.”
He could imagine Hakyeon screaming for help while Hyuk clung to his cheek with his mouth. “Where’s eomma now?” he asked, the corners of his lips curling up despite his frustration with the boy. That bright smile and those dimples were contagious, and Taekwoon was thankful someone, other than himself, could handle Hyuk.
“He went to the clinic with Wonshik, just to be sure he doesn’t get a tummyache,” Hongbin said mechanically, brushing soggy crumbs out of Hyuk’s face. Taekwoon guessed the boy probably didn’t understand what poisoning was, directly quoting Hakyeon. “They’ll be back soon, eomma said.”
“Okay, good.” Taekwoon nodded, relieved. He almost thought he had to go home to watch over them--He would love to, but he was hardly finished with work and he had deadlines to meet.
Then he caught a glimpse of a dusty football in the corner and remembered why he had called in the first place.
“Coach Kang-in texted me awhile ago,” he started, and even through video call, he could see, feel Hongbin stiffen, staring everywhere but at the screen. “He said you haven’t been coming to practice. Are you--”
Hongbin’s display shook and he heard something crash in the background. “Aaah! Look at what you did, Hyogie,” Hongbin tut-tutted, and Taekwoon noticed his leg pulling back, Hyuk’s puzzled face as he looked up at his brother, still sitting on the floor and gnawing at the giant pretzel. Whatever it was that crashed, the boy had kicked it to distract him. “Have to clean this up before they come back. Bye, appa!”
And then the call ended, leaving Taekwoon to frown at his phone, Hongbin’s display picture mocking.
-----------------------------------
Taekwoon never broke promises. He rarely ever made them, and when he did, he kept his word. Hakyeon knew this, and he had promised that morning that he would come home early, but his husband still found it necessary to barrage him with texts.
Where are you? (o^ ^o)
What are you doing? ♡(˘⌣˘ )
You’re coming home tonight, right? (◕‿◕)♡
You promised you’d come home. (´• ω •`)
I’ll be waiting~ ♡ ~('▽^人)
And it might have been endearing any other time, but not when Taekwoon was directing one artist after another, coaching them throughout the recording, listening to the recorded tracks, and re-recording when necessary, all to be finished before the end of the day so he could honor his promise. It didn’t help that Wonshik’s blue mouth and Hongbin missing football practice were still bouncing around in his head, making it pound in addition to the crash of 3 cups of coffee he had had throughout the day. His phone beeping every few minutes did not improve his mood.
One of the PA’s knew to go for another coffee run (and maybe some snacks) when Taekwoon grabbed his device and lobbed it across the room. It crashed against the wall, saved only by its armored phone case, before landing on the couch.
-----------------------------------
Eyes heavy, head pounding, Taekwoon sat in his car, unmoving. Hands on the wheel, fingers tapping an irregular beat. He looked out the window, staring at the facade of the house he and Hakyeon had built together and called home. He had left work early, as he promised, head near bursting with jumbled lyrics, blue mouths, giant pretzels, and cute little emoticons, swimming in a loop of instrumentals that once had a distinct melody but now clashed and buzzed in an unidentifiable din.
He hadn’t been paying attention to where he was going as he drove, finding his way home out of habit, and now hesitating whether he should come in or not. He loved his family, he truly did, and he could never think of living without them, and sometimes that was the only thought that kept him from driving away, somewhere they won’t find him, somewhere he could have a little peace of mind.
The family became too big, too fast, and sometimes Taekwoon regretted not listening to Hakyeon. Maybe they should have waited before getting more kids after all, but...here they were.
The sun was still out. First time in weeks that he saw it again, painting the sky in the soft shade of orange that Ken loved, turning navy blue the farther it was from the horizon, Hongbin’s favorite color. His eyes flickered to Hyuk’s booster seat in the back, Wonshik’s pillow right beside it, a little crusty in places with dried spit.
A car passed him, its headlights catching on the ring on his left hand. Two silver bands looping over and under one another, rounded to form a ring. Hakyeon had designed their wedding rings himself, took him months and delayed their wedding, but so happy when he finally finished it, his smile all teeth and blinding. Designed after the infinity symbol. “Because our love is forever,” said Hakyeon.
Taekwoon sighed and pressed the button to open the gate.
-----------------------------------
When Taekwoon entered the house, he almost thought he had gone into the wrong one.
Golden sheets of cloth hung from the ceiling in arches, painted with blue stars (Taekwoon could tell which ones had been made by Ken and which ones were made by any one of his brothers), the fabric softening the glare of the fluorescent lights of their house and bathing everything in a soft yellow. A white carpet had been laid down, strewn with blue rose petals, all the way from the foyer where he stood and leading to the living room.
Taekwoon checks his phone as he toes out of his shoes. May 24. Not their wedding anniversary. What’s gotten into Hakyeon?
Curiosity and excitement for a surprise overpowered exhaustion, and Taekwoon follows the trail of petals on the floor, his hand absently tracing the wall, when his fingers caught on something. Taekwoon looked up and found--How did he even miss it?--photos taped to the wall. So many photos.
A black-and-white photo of Ken, a little blip in a sweet lady’s stomach. Taekwoon remembers the day she told them that it had taken, that she was finally pregnant. It had taken them two attemps, and he and Hakyeon were about to give up, so elated that they had cried, and it chokes Taekwoon up even now.
Then a photo of himself, smiling serenely, eyes closed, as he lightly pressed his ear against her baby bump, listening to Ken kicking in her belly.
Hakyeon and him in baby pink scrubs, noses and mouths covered with masks but their smiles evident by the crinkle of their teary eyes as they held Ken between them, small and pink and perfect. His little hand was grasping Taekwoon’s pinky, his little mouth forming a small “o” in a yawn. A bracelet wrapped loosely around his tiny wrist, and Taekwoon knew rather than saw what was written on it. Cha-Jung Jaehwan.
Hakyeon curled around Ken in his crib, that one night when nothing could make him stop crying. Taekwoon rocking Ken to sleep in his arms, singing him a lullaby. Hakyeon feeding Ken his first baby food, homemade apple puree. Taekwoon teaching Ken how to walk. Hakyeon, Taekwoon, and Ken grinning as they sent him off to kindergarten.
Taekwoon felt his heart swell, choking him up as his eyes warmed with tears. He touched each photo lightly, delicately. So precious.
Then there was him, Hakyeon, and Ken in the car. Hakyeon was smiling but there was anxiety in the way his eyebrows scrunched while, even in a still, Ken looked about to bounce off his seat. Taekwoon himself had a face-splitting grin. They were on their way to the orphanage.
Ken holding another child’s hand in each of his--Wonshik on his left, jet black hair in complete disarray and looking up at the camera, at Taekwoon, droopy eyes pleading; Hongbin on his right, chocolate brown hair tied up into curly twintails, looking anxiously at Ken and biting his lower lip. Taekwoon and Hakyeon had only planned to find a sibling for Ken, spending the entire day in the orphanage and talking to different kids, but the boy had found two himself, Wonshik and Hongbin.
At the time, it had been Hakyeon who had been hesitant. How could they possibly handle suddenly having three children? But Taekwoon had held his hand, giving it a little squeeze, and said, “We’ll make it. We have each other, don’t we?”
Now Taekwoon wants to kick himself for even thinking of leaving, of being away from his family, hot tears rolling down his cheeks. They were his everything. He doesn’t even muffle it when a sob bubbles up his throat and escapes his mouth. He continues down the hall, taking a few seconds to look at each picture.
Their bedroom, Hakyeon holding the camera away with one arm, the other around Ken who was asleep on his chest. Taekwoon beside them, Hongbin on his chest, Wonshik in his arm between him and Hakyeon. Their first night together as a family.
Taekwoon painting the wall of Wonshik’s new room, black and white stripes from the ceiling to the floor, while looking over at Hongbin, Wonshik, and Ken, armed with brushes pointed at one another, streaks of paint all over their faces, arms, and clothes. Taekwoon remembered Hakyeon fuming over laundry before finally giving up on removing the paint and just declaring them the boys’ official work clothes, for any and all occasions that might end with them dirty.
Hakyeon sitting on a rocking chair by Wonshik’s bed, worry on his face as he watched over the boy sleep. Hongbin’s room, the walls baby blue with a navy blue accent, their pretty boy in bed and curled around Wonshik. The two boys were prone to nightmares, but Hakyeon made sure, still does, that they felt safe with him, with each other. It’s a work in progress, but Taekwoon hopes, knows that someday their nights would be quiet and filled with sweet dreams instead.
There were times when he thought of taking Hongbin and Wonshik back to the orphanage, but now he can’t even imagine the house without them in it, their voices filling the halls with laughter, full and coming from the belly. Can’t imagine anyone other than himself and Hakyeon hugging them, cooing them back to sleep after a particularly hard nightmare.
The next picture brought a fresh mixture of joy and longing in Taekwoon. It was another ultrasound, almost completely black, the baby in it such a small dot of white that they almost thought he wasn’t there, but the doctor and the number of pregnancy tests they did confirmed that he was indeed there, somewhere, too small to see. He had seen it on her face too. Jisoo, Hyuk’s surrogate mother, had been positively glowing.
There weren’t any pictures of her on the wall though, and that was fine. Taekwoon understood, and Jisoo would have too. Taekwoon is only starting to get an idea of what today is about, but he is sure it isn’t about him and her.
Today is about them--Hakyeon, Taekwoon, and the kids, Ken, Wonshik, Hongbin, and Hyuk.
Hakyeon covering his mouth with his hand, tears spilling from his eyes, as his other hand felt Hyuk kick in Jisoo’s belly. It had taken some convincing, but Hakyeon finally agreed to see Jisoo, putting his jealousy aside to visit their baby, his and Taekwoon’s.
A side-by-side collage of Taekwoon holding little (well, littler) baby Hyuk in his arms, kissing the top of his bald head, and then Hakyeon cradling him carefully, almost warily, but there was wonder and love in his eyes as he gazed at the baby’s sleeping face.
Hakyeon may not have been happy with Taekwoon’s choice to have his teenage sweetheart carry their baby for them, but he could not help but love the boy that was also partly Taekwoon.
Ken and Wonshik standing on the tips of their toes to see above the bars of the crib, watching over their baby brother with an excited glint in their eyes. When will he wake up? Can he play with us? Can we play with him? Hongbin had wisely sat down and looked instead through the gaps between the bars, where he had a better view of the baby with less effort, saying, “No, he’s too small. Right, appa?” Taekwoon had patted Wonshik and Ken’s heads fondly. “Hongbinnie’s right. He needs to get bigger first,” he had said, earning disappointed whines from the two boys.
Hongbin, face half covered with a mask, holding a medicine dropper full of water to Hyuk’s mouth, the baby sucking eagerly--The time Hyuk had caught the flu, and everyone but Hongbin had panicked, which led to the next picture in which Taekwoon is holding Hyuk against him with one hand, the camera with the other. Hyuk had a cotton ball taped to his shoulder, exactly like the ones Ken, Hongbin and Wonshik were showing off on their shoulders from behind them. Hakyeon’s head poked from the side of the frame, grinning widely.
It’s only been a few years since he and Hakyeon said their vows, but their family is already six-members big, the two of them neck deep in parenthood too fast, too deep, that it left Taekwoon reeling, overwhelmed by the weight of the four little lives on his shoulders. So heavy for such small packages.
And being away from home for so long, not being with them for even a few minutes every day, Taekwoon had forgotten that he wasn’t carrying them alone. Ever since Ken arrived---No, even before then. The moment he decided he wanted to have a family, kids of his own, Hakyeon had been at his side.
He wasn’t even carrying them at all. His kids, their kids hadn’t simply been growing up. They had been growing with him.
Feeling the heaviness on his heart and on his shoulders lift, a sound that was halfway between a laugh and a sob tumbled out of his mouth, loud and full, and he heard Wonshik’s voice from the living room, “What’s appa laughing at?”
“The picture of your little weewee, probably,” came Hongbin’s voice, followed by Hyuk’s giggles. The baby didn’t understand, but Taekwoon guessed Wonshik had made a face. That always made Hyuk laugh. Then there was an indignant gasp. “You put it there!?”
Hakyeon’s bright laughter. “No, Ken did.” There was another indignant gasp. “Eomma! You said you wouldn’t tell!”
“What, you think you got being a sell-out from your appa?” was Hakyeon’s giggly answer, much to Ken’s chagrin. “Nooooooooo!”
“Hey, I should be saying that!” said Wonshik, straining to look for the scandalous little Polaroid. He was soon stopped when he saw Taekwoon joining them in laughter, happy tears rolling freely down his cheeks, walking into the living room.
Party strings exploded in his face, fired from four different cans, as a large banner read, “Happy Us Now”. Only then did Taekwoon remembered what day it was.
May 24.
The day Hakyeon said yes.
The day they decided to build a family. Their family.
“This is why--”
“Mmhm.” Hakyeon smiled and loosely grabbed Taekwoon’s waist. “Among other things.” He carefully brushed the tears away with his thumb and said softly, “They made you a cake.” Ken’s eyes sparkled and he said, “Oh yeah! The cake! We gotta go get it~”
Hongbin’s voice trailed off as the kids went towards the kitchen. “You mean the one we almost burned the house with?”
Ken’s answering chirp made both parents laugh. “The house can’t burn down, Binnie. We put protective seals on it and everything.”
While the children were getting the cake, Hakyeon smiled and held his husband’s hand, their wedding rings clinking together. “I’ll always be by your side, okay? I love you.”
Taekwoon nodded, and kissed the top of Hakyeon’s head. “Even if you send me really annoying text messages.”
Hakyeon breathed out a little puff of air. “Excuse you, those emojis were cute.”
His heart swelled with affection then, seeing his pouty, clingy husband. “Ah. This face.” Taekwoon cupped Hakyeon’s cheeks, his husband trying his best to look angry. “I’ll just have to love you some more, won’t I?”
And Hakyeon couldn’t answer anymore as Taekwoon pressed a kiss to the center of his lips. His puffed cheeks were replaced with a happy smile. “Of course. Forever and ever. We’ll make it work. We have each other, don’t we?” Hakyeon said, echoing Taekwoon as they looked to the kids smearing icing on each other’s faces.
Question: So I wondering about VIXX kids meets another group’s kids, like examples Got7 or BTS?? What do you think?
Admin K: Ah … I decided on child!Got7. I hope you like this little drabble.
Normally, Taekwoon would request for at least a day’s notice before any of the kids brought friends home from school. There was the question of food preparation, and there were days when the house was a complete disaster.
cj.hongbin - Appa! On my way home from school. I have a friend with me, is that okay?
j.taekwoon - I’m not sure…did you ask your eomma?
Taekwoon had just submitted a new song to the company and was waiting on the response, and was currently preparing the children’s afternoon snack. He’d already gotten the kimchi fried rice cooked, and all he had to do now was to make eggs.
A few minutes later, his phone beeped again.
yeonnie - why do you do this to me baby
j.taekwoon - what’s wrong honey?
yeonnie - beanbimbap asked if one of jr’s children could sleep over tonight
j.taekwoon - did you just call our son beanbimbap?
yeonnie - *more importantly*, how are things at home?
j.taekwoon - just preparing eggs for the kimchi fried rice.
yeonnie - ah I can’t wait~ anyway I said yes as long as his friend brings over his own sleeping bag.
j.taekwoon - oh.
yeonnie - the house isn’t that bad honey.
j.taekwoon - …
yeonnie - they’re there to have a good time, not to judge our house.
j.taekwoon - okay.
j.taekwoon - your mom says it’s ok, just get your friend to bring over his own sleeping bag.
cj.hongbin - thanks appa, you’re the best
j.taekwoon - thank your mom
cj.hongbin - I did, I stopped by the store and bought banana milk!! c:
j.taekwoon - okay. see you soon, love you
Good thing he’d made double the usual portions of rice. He had just finished placing the last egg on top of the bowl before the doorbell rang.
“Coming…” Taekwoon smoothed out his hair and took out the clips that he wore to keep his hair out of his eyes while cooking. When he opened the door, he was assaulted by Hyuk, Wonshik and Ken hugging him all at once.
He toppled backwards onto the couch, laughing as he hugged his three children. “Welcome home.”
“Appa, appa!” His children smelled like a combination of sunshine, sweat and powder–but there were only three in his arms, not four. Carefully, he untangled himself from his three children and walked up to the front door again.
There was nobody there, and he began to grow a little worried.
“Where’s Hongbin?” he asked them as he closed the front door. Wonshik piped up, “Binnie-ah went over to Yugyeom’s house to grab a sleeping bag.”
Taekwoon frowned. He’d trained his kids to text if anything were to happen.
He was about to check his phone when he heard a fierce boom from the sky. The weather forecast had called for rain–not a thunderstorm.
He wondered how far Yugyeom lived, and was about to dial Hongbin’s number when his phone rang with an unknown number.
“Hello?” He asked cautiously, hoping it wasn’t a fan who’d somehow gotten his personal number.
“Good afternoon, Taekwoon-hyung. This is Jr, Yugyeom’s father.” The line was a bit choppy and he heard thunder rumbling in the background. “Yes, hello–is Hongbin there? They were supposed to have a sleepover here.”
“About that–” Jr sounded sheepish. “–the rain’s fierce over here, and Hongbin insisted that you be informed first. But we’ll be keeping Hongbin overnight until the storm clears up.”
Worry raced through Taekwoon’s veins, but he supposed it was much safer to allow Hongbin to stay. “Mm..where do you live, if I may ask?”
“In the next town. Hakyeon-hyung dropped off Hongbin right before the storm started.”
Ah. If Hakyeon had brought Hongbin there, then surely it was all right.
“…Oh, he’s here. Taekwoon-hyung, I’ll give the phone over to Hongbin.”
“Appa! I’m really sorry.” Hongbin sounded a bit breathless over the phone, and in the background he could hear someone scream “JACKSON QUIT CHEATING, THIS IS MONOPOLY, NOT UNO!”
It made him chuckle despite himself. “We can’t help the weather…are you all right?”
“Yeah, Yugyeom’s parents made sure we took a bath and were dry. I’ll be home tomorrow, the weather app says the storm will clear up by then.”
That was fine, honestly. Better that his son was safe and with someone Hakyeon trusted. Still, he's a bit concerned and decides to look up Jr and Yugyeom using the Internet.
Cha-Jung Taekwoon found out that Yugyeom was the son of Im Jaebum and Park Jinyoung. Similar to himself and Hakyeon, Yugyeom was from a surrogate, and he had four other siblings.
"Hey, whatcha looking at, Woonie?" Says a voice from above. Startled, Taekwoon looks up and promptly bumps his head against Hakyeon's chin. His husband winced in slight pain and rubbed his chin. "Man. I forgot how badly you reacted to surprises...sorry baby."
"Mm." Taekwoon gently presses a kiss to Hakyeon's chin and pats the space beside him, inviting Hakyeon to sit on the couch. The room was oddly quiet and a little dim--the kids had gone up to their bedrooms. Taking advantage of their sudden privacy, Hakyeon nuzzled close to Taekwoon while his husband was looking at his laptop.
"Binnie will be fine, Taek. I met Jinyoung in college; he was Minhyuk's classmate."
"I guess..." Taekwoon said softly as he pressed a kiss to Hakyeon's hair. "I'm just not used to one of our boys not being home." Hakyeon smiled a little at that and reached for Taekwoon's hand, clasping it fondly.
"I know, baby. But...we can't really control the weather..." As if on cue, the rain began to patter against the glass, and the wind began to howl. Hopefully the storm would clear up in the morning--Taekwoon wouldn't want Hongbin to impose another night.
Just as he was drifting off to sleep beside Hakyeon, their phones rang at the same time.
Hakyeon reached into his pants pocket and smiled. "It's from Bean."
beanbimbap:
Yugyeom introduced me to his brothers. They're all really nice--Jackson even knows Hyukkie! We just had dinner and Yugyeom's gonna lend me his sleeping bag. Hope to see you soon, eomma. Love you.
also you can show this to appa if you want, I'm sure he's worried by now. Love you guys! See you tomorrow. Yugyeom's appa is going to drop me off.
Taekwoon huffed, even as his lips curled into a happy smile.
"I still can't believe you named our son beanbimbap in your phone..."
