Something I don’t see many people talk about on the topic of Jason Todd is his voice. (I’ll be talking about Troy Baker here, so if you’re a Jensen Ackles fan you might not get me.)
Ever since I first played Batman AK about 6 years ago, I really loved Jason, and I really wanted to know more about him, including his voice. However, we already know that Arkhamverse Jason doesn’t have much voice content where he’s free of his modulator, so there wasn’t really anywhere to go with that. However, I ironically did the perfect thing to solve all of my questions yesterday. That being, I decided to start a rerun of Infamous Second Son, one of my all time favorite games. At the start I immediately thought the mc, Delsin Rowe, sounded familiar. A quick google search later and I find out he is in fact voiced by Troy Baker. And yes, he sounds just like Jason without the modulator as Delsin. (Also how the hell did I not notice this before)
Getting to the point, I took this playthrough to really sit and listen to how Troy Baker’s voice reflects the character he’s playing. This was a huge help with finding out what Jason would sound like in a less stressful/relaxed environment where he’s not under the pressure of being the Arkham Knight. To say the least, I could make a few decently accurate assumptions that point to Jason’s tone being naturally fierce/bold, yet not threatening. It’s super easy to hear underlying tones of disappointment, anger, happiness, etc when he speaks, as he tends to voice his thoughts with emotion. His voice is normally light with a bit of rasp, definitely not something I would consider deep, yet more on the whisper-y side. Troy Baker wonderfully portrays the voice of a young, unhinged adult, and it’s really shown in both Delsin and Jason alike.
For a little extra info, Jason’s laughs would be very light and easy to track excitement through. He also tends to make more drastic noises when getting hurt, less whiny than his casual note and kinda packed with grit. (Adding onto that, he does sound pretty whiny when he’s not angry, but not in a weird pouty way) He’s got a natural sting in his words that puts a nice contrast to his lighthearted undertone, which makes it super easy to tell he’s someone that shows emotions with both actions and words. Seeing as Jason and Delsin are vaguely familiar in how they act, and not to mention are rather close in age, I can happily camp down with my guesses.
Thanks for coming to my tedtalk about how much I love Jason Todd’s AK voice
