Dakota Rank/Cavendish Importance Theory
So I’ve been thinking a lot about Dakota and Cavendish- nothing new there- and was thinking about how the new information presented(lol get it? Christmas? Presents? Sorry I’ll continue) could impact the theories I already have for them, and basically I now theorize that maybe Dakota never got demoted in the first place.
Bare with me here for a minute.
One of my theories- which I almost want to count as canon due to so much evidence- is that Dakota was a much higher ranking agent, /before/ he started working with Cavendish.
This is supported mainly by the scene in ‘Time Out’ where Cavendish and Dakota are talking about the “Mississippi Purchase”. Dakota says “I joined [B.O.T.T.] to stop the Mississippi Purchase”. Cavendish attempts to correct him by asking if he meant the “Louisiana Purchase”, to which Dakota simply says “You’re welcome!”
I get it’s for humor- and I love that- but the most likely answer for this is that Dakota lived in a world where the “Mississippi Purchase” occured and then when it lead to negative reprocussions down the road, Dakota joined the Bureau of Time Travel to fix it.
This would also mean that Cavendish joined the B.O.T.T. /after/ Dakota because Cavendish is firmiliar with the Louisiana Purchase.
Anyways.
This is important because I was thinking that Dakota, with all his obvious skills and capabilities, was mostly likely a much higher leveled agent who was then demoted go work with newbie Cavendish.
Now I raise you; What if Dakota never /stopped being/ one?
This might sound rediculous and probably a bit cliche, but I think it’s quite possible that Dakota is still one of B.O.T.Ts top agents who was /assigned/ to protect Cavendish in the first place.
Dakota’s cover set by the agency could easily be that he was demoted for doing something crazy, since he does seem to have a tendency to do so.
I think it would most likely be that, with all the time traveling going on, someone from a future further ahead than 2175 came back and told the time bureau that Cavendish was important and must be protected for the good of humanity. Or maybe they go back from a future which is horrible and it was all traced back to the death of Cavendish.
It would explain why the universe seems to want Cavendish dead, how Dakota is so skilled yet is considered the lowest class by his peers, how Dakota gets away with a literal entire Island of himself, how Dakota already seems firmiliar with higher-raking agents and where they are during their missions, why Dakota and Cav are still sent on missions even though they constantly fail, ect.
Cavendish has to end up on a certain course and Dakota has to make sure it happens.
Which would also explain things like why Dakota is so disinterested for many of the first episodes. I had chalked it up to him already completing his mission of fixing the Mississippi/Louisiana Purchase, but now I wonder if there’s something else.
And it also would explain why Mr. Block has a strong dislike for Cavendish in particular. He might not see why he should bother humoring Cav with missions when he doesn’t even seem smart enough to accomplish one.
Hey, and Mr. Block might be giving him small missions because he doesn’t want Cav to mess up the timeline too wildly. Idk just a thought. Idk if it’s consistant at all.
But at any rate, then, of course, along the way the pair probably realized that the other wasn’t really so bad and the rest is history.

Tl;dr
I think that maybe Dakota’s real mission is to protect Cavendish even though no one else knows bc it would explain A LOT.
