CSRGOVE K33: Journal Entry #3

Mika Adarna September 7 or 9, 2015 CSRGOVE K33        Today, our professor prepared the Rokeach Value Survey for us, which is a classification system of our terminal and instrumental values. Terminal values are the ultimate thing a person wants to achieve through his or her life -- the end; whereas instrumental values indicate the methods a person would like to take on for achieving his or her life’s ultimate goal -- the means.

        We were asked to rank the values we consider the most important to the least significant. The top 5 of my terminal values are Happiness, Family Security, A Comfortable Life, An Exciting Life, and A World at Peace while the last on my list, the 18th, was Mature Love. It is not because I do not regard mature love as insignificant however, it is just that I find it the least essential compared to the other given 17 values. The top 5 of my instrumental values, from what I recall, are Cheerfulness, Broad-Mindedness, Intellect, Self-Control, and Capability while the last on my list, the 18th, was Forgiveness. I used to believe that everyone deserved a second chance however, not anymore. Call me cruel, call me mean, but let me ask you this, are you able to forgive the person who murdered your loved ones? Raped your daughter? Or massacred millions of innocent lives just because of them having different beliefs? I would not. Some crimes just cannot be justified nor pardoned, which is why I unintentionally ranked Forgiveness as my last. I am not perfect but neither is anyone else, and that is totally fine; I strive to become the best version I can possibly be and I think that itself, is a great objective. I hope that this class will continue to let me discover parts of myself I never knew, indeed was this activity insightful.

CSRGOVE K33: Journal Entry #2

     I got to know some of my classmates better during today’s hand drawing activity. Our professor instructed us to write our different views, values, and experiences on each finger as well as our role model in being ethical in our decisions. After doing what was instructed,we were assigned in groups to talk about what we have written and little did I know that some of them underwent much difficult hardships than I have. One can never know another’s story just by simply looking at them, that is why I never assume and always stay tact.      Getting to know someone better will strengthen your bond towards that person because in a sense, you got to discover parts of that person that most do not know; and I think that is beautiful. Friendship that has complete trust and faith is one of the instrumental values that I keep close to heart for finding someone worthy is already a difficult task as it is. I am the kind of person that does not give the benefit of the doubt (anymore) and the reason -- well -- you can use your imagination; however, I still believe there are still people who can manage to change my mind and perspective. I am open-minded which is why I am very keen on discovering new things as well as meeting new people. I have been frequently told that I would make a great counselor or companion because of my persona; however, I believe I still have much room for improvement and through this class, I hope I continue to develop as a great student leader.

CSRGOVE K33: Journal Entry #1

     Today’s lecture concerning corporate social responsibility (CSR) made me realize its significance in one’s professional and social life. My professor shared her experience working in the field of human resource and management, she emphasized on how important it is for one to be remain determined and firm in order to change the norm and create something new, she was able to send a few student scholars to study in the esteemed De La Salle University through persevering and passionately requesting one of the brothers in the university to accept her vision. Her story amazed me simply because it was no easy feat to accomplish, it made me want to make a difference in our country.

     CSR is a company’s sense of responsibility towards the community and environment (both ecological and social) in which it operates (WebFinance, 2015). What I think the Philippines needs most as of this moment would be discipline; Filipino citizens need to have a stronger sense of responsibility and love towards their country, to keep it clean and help their fellow neighbors. However, achieving this goal is a high hurdle because of multiple problems such as having a government well known to be corrupt and unjust. A government is supposed to serve and help its citizens yet ours does not. If our politicians opened their eyes and had a change of heart to care and love their country and citizens, the Philippines would thrive and flourish. CSR is very much needed in our community in a small and large scale. Through this course, I truly hope I can better understand and manifest CSR within myself.
