Did Kakuzu belong to a clan or just a small family?

[/ If he did belong to a clan, we aren't aware of it canonly. However, I don't necessarily think so. Takigakure doesn't exactly seem like a big enough village to hold many different large clan names like Konoha, so they were most likely a group that intermingled with one another to avoid interbreeding, if that makes sense.

So, my personal opinion is that Kakuzu just belonged to a small family, though they were all killed in the War before he gave himself much of a name in the village. ]

( headcanon request -- Kakuzu learning the stolen techniques of Takigakure and manipulating the mask/giving them form. )

[/ Though Jiongu (Earth Grudge Fear) was not initially intended for the incorporation of masks into the technique, Kakuzu had been able to manipulate it for his own usage. The four beasts that he can create are not capable of having their own free will; they are merely the extension of Kakuzu's via chakra. Keeping them formed and working correctly takes an incredibly amount of precise chakra control, which took many years of practice to perfect. The threads are controlled in a similar manner.

Having to battle more than one enemy at once is dangerous, which is what had spurred the idea of creating his monsters in the first place. First attempts at controlling more than one or two hearts at a time were laughable at best, but he was quick to learn in order to survive. ]

[/ Yes, he does. Kakuzu's entire being is due to the death of his family, from his beliefs of money (saving in order to prosper) to the stitches on his skin from the Kinjutsu he'd stolen. It's somewhat impossible for him to not think about, though he does his best in order to push it from his mind. ]
