This morning I was thinking about nicknames, so I did a little digging, and now I can’t stop thinking about Kaneki calling Touka "Tou-Tou" or "Tou-chan" Especially when he wants to tease her and gets all playful with her.

One of the more underrated bullshit changes in the Tokyo Ghoul anime, is the two people Jason kills in front of Kaneki.
In the manga, Kaneki has a long flashback about his mother, and how she died. He ends the flashback by crying and saying he wished his mother chose him instead of working herself to death for her selfish sister.
RIGHT AFTER THIS, Jason shows Kaneki two of Banjou’s allies who he’d captured, and it’s a mother and her son. He then asks Kaneki who he should spare and Kaneki CAN’T CHOOSE. Both end up getting killed.
It’s not a fucking coincidence that right after Kaneki cries about his mother not choosing him, he has to choose between killing a mother or her son, and he can’t choose, like c’mon. It’s ain’t subtle.
So naturally the anime kept the mother flashbacks, but changed it so that the two people Kaneki has to choose between is a romantic couple??? What?
They changed the scene where Kaneki has to choose to save a mother or her son, right after the scene where Kaneki thinks ablut his mother, AND THEY CHANGED IT TO A BOYFRIEND AND A GIRLFRIEND???? Kaneki still can’t choose either, like okay.
I really don’t get this choice. It’s so dumb.

I, like 90% of other Tokyo Ghoul fans, hate the anime adaptation for messing up the story and characters. However I do think it could’ve worked, if they’d committed to their weird “What if…?” scenario.
I think what they should’ve done, was had the anime be a bad ending. Since Kaneki joins Aogiri, he ends up going through a corruption arc and most of the events in the manga would never happen. Thus :re wouldn’t happen, and if it did it would be completely different and Kaneki would genuinely have a really bad outcome.
Yeah it still wouldn’t have been a good adaptation, but at least it wasn’t trying to be the manga, it was doing it’s own thing.
