Biker killed as Baljit Singh Kumbra’s SUV overturned and landed on him; Kumbra’s wife, a Mohali councillor, and driver also injured
Baljit Singh Kumbra, 65, the Mohali urban president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and a motorcyclist were killed after the former’s SUV overturned due to a tyre burst in Lalru on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway on Thursday.
Kumbra’s wife Rajinder Kaur, 64, a municipal councillor in Mohali’s ward number 46, and their driver Tarsem Singh, 53, were injured in the accident. The couple lived in Sector 69, Mohali.
The deceased motorcyclist was identified as Shakti Singh, 23, a resident of Ambala. He worked in a private firm in Chandigarh and was returning to Ambala when the accident took place.
Were headed to attend relative’s cremation – Karan Arora Chandigarh
Police said Kumbra and his wife were on their way to Shahabad, Ambala, to attend the cremation of a relative. Kumbra was sitting on the front seat next to Tarsem. On their way, around 4pm the front tyre of their Toyota Fortuner car burst, causing the vehicle to overturn and jump the divider between the highway and the adjacent slip road.
The impact threw Kumbra through the front windshield, causing his head to crash on the road. His driver also sustained a head injury, while his wife suffered a fractured shoulder besides other injuries.
As the SUV jumped the divider and overturned, it landed on Shakti Singh’s motorcycle, moving on the slip road.
The four injured victims were rushed to Dera Bassi hospital where Kumbra and Shakti was declared brought dead. Rajinder and Tarsem were later shifted to a private hospital in Phase 8, Mohali.
Kumbra is survived by his wife, son Harman, who is a businessman, and a daughter who lives abroad with her husband.
“His elder son was kidnapped in 1991, and there has been no trace of him since then. Harman was born three years later in 1994,” a family friend shared.
Entered active politics after retirement
Kumbra retired as assistant manager from Punjab State Agriculture Bank in 2011. Post retirement, he stepped into active politics though he had been associated with SAD even during service and had been office-bearer of various employee unions.
Hailing from Kumbra village in Mohali, Kumbra was made organising secretary of SAD within a year, and was eventually appointed SAD Mohali Urban president in 2017.
He had also remained chairman of the Kharar market committee during SAD government’s regime in Punjab.
In 2011, Kumbra has conceived a joint action committee of all resident welfare committees in Mohali, and was its general secretary. This joint action committee ensures that the rates for conveyance deeds are implemented according to size of plots or flats.
He had recently been also raising the disparity in water tariff charged by GMADA and Mohali Municipal Corporation. He had opposed the inflated rates of water tariff being charged by GMADA for Sector 66 to 80, Mohali.
“Kumbra was active member of Kissan Hit Bachao Committee that protested against the Congress government for not meeting farmers’ demands for six years since 2002. Due to the efforts of Kumbra and Akali government’s finance minister late Capt Kawanljit Singh, GMADA introduced the land pooling scheme in 2008,” said DP Singh, convener of Kissan Hit Bachao Committee.

Kangana Questioning Ranveer,Ranbir and Alia Bhatt – Karan Arora Chandigarh
Kangna Commenting Ranbir,Alia And Ranveer being irresponsible for not commenting on Politics
Kangana Ranaut has again taken aim at actress Alia Bhatt, this time along with her boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor and co-star Ranveer Singh. Kangana is particularly upset with these Bollywood A-listers for not being vocal about their political views.
Calling Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt “irresponsible” for their apolitical stand on issues, Kangana said that film personalities should take interest in matters of national importance. While promoting their film Gully Boy, Ranveer and Alia had said they do not have any political views or ideology, prompting backlash from a section of people on social media.
On Sunday, Kangana reiterated that while there are “zero per cent chances” of her entering politics, actors should voice concerns on issues around them.
“I was watching Ranveer and Alia’s interview where they said, ‘Why should we speak about politics? We haven’t done anything.’ It doesn’t work like that. You have to be responsible.
“Ranbir Kapoor was telling somebody, ‘Mere ghar mei toh bijli, paani aata hai (My house gets electricity and water). Why should I (care about) politics?’ You have this house because of this country. It’s the money of the citizens with which you buy a Mercedes. How can you talk like that? This is irresponsible,” Kangana told reporters at the success party of her film Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi.
She said an actor’s responsibility does not end with featuring in a film. “Even if my career goes away, I don’t mind. If there is electricity and water coming in my home that doesn’t mean I don’t care about anyone else.”
The actor said she wondered why career was “so important to these people that they don’t care about the country at all”. “We should take interest in national matters. It’s silly to think that I shouldn’t be asked about anything, (thinking) ‘what if I lose an endorsement?’ This is stupid.”
In an interview last month, Kangana had spoken out about how people in the industry, including Alia and Aamir Khan, did not support her during the release of Manikarnika, while she had turned up for the screenings of Dangal, Secret Superstar and Raazi.
This was followed by Alia saying that she will apologise to Kangana on a personal level if she was upset with her.

One Is A Thrill Ride While Other Is A Dose Of Laughter
The Sushant Singh Rajpoot starrer, Son Chiraiya is out in the theaters and it seems like the film will have a tough competition as Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon’s Luka Chuppi is also released today. Both of the films have separate themes but both of them are the packs of entertainment.
Story Of Luka Chuppi
Vinod/Guddu is a reporter and a new story led him to Rashmi (Kriti Sanon). The reporting story soon turned into his own love story and he has desires to take it to the next level. This made him propose to Rashmi (Kriti Sanon) however, the couple came to decide that they should live-in-relationship. Their decision flips everything upside down as they are from a small town of North India where live-in is totally unacceptable. Apart from that, some certain cast related rules are followed in that town. On top of that, Rashmi’s father is a politician who is totally against the live-in.
An Unusual Live-In
So the couple started “living-in-relationship” but they told their respective families that they are married. They lied about their marriage and the entire family accepted them as a married couple. A series of dramatic yet funny incidents take place after that and the couple faced a lot of problems in order to hide their single lie.
Cast
The film encompasses quirky characters that will make you laugh your core out. Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon are looking great in their respective role. Besides that, there is Aparikshit Khurana, Pankaj Tripathi and Vinay Pathak who are extremely hilarious with their roles.
The film is packed with hilarious punches and the comic approach makes it worth watching. We would like to give 3.5/5 stars to Luka Chuppi.
Story Of Son Chiraiya
Son Chiraiya tells the story of Chambal where a pack of rebels is marked as dacoits. The dacoits have their own set of rules as they do not toss any harm to females and children. Sushant Singh Rajput played the intense character of Lakhan and it is considered one of the best performance by him. Ashutosh Rana and Manoj Bajpayee are adroit as ever. Apart from that Bhumi Pednekar fits perfectly in the role of Indumati Tomar.

The film is packed with action and it feels like a trip to the small yet chaotic villages of Chambal. Apart from that, the film delivers loud messages against misogyny and the patriarchal society. We would like to give 3/5 stars to it.

The Indian Express’ film critic Shubhra Gupta gave it one-and-a-half stars, noting, “But Why Cheat India is disjointed and disappointing, never quite knowing which side it is on, even as it spends time showing us how good students can be ruined by greed, and how parents can put killing pressure on their children in their struggle to break the vicious gap between present debt and potential income.”
She added, “The material is slender and too stretched over two hours, as it goes from engineering-medicine into management, the holy grail. The entrance of gun-toting ‘gundas’ and stealing of question papers, and an unconvincing revenge angle, turns the whole thing ludicrous.”
