When is Karkidaka Vavu?
Karkidaka Vavu is a regional public holiday observed in the southern Indian state of Kerala on the full moon of the Malayalam calendar month of Karkidakam. In the Western calendar, this indicates it is in July or August.
Karkidaka Vavu, also known as "Karkidaka Vavu Bali" or Karkkadaka Vavu, is the term given to the rites done by Hindus in the state of Kerala for their deceased ancestors.
Karkidakam and its traditions
Karkidakam is the last masam of the Malayalam calendar and has religious importance for Kerala Hindus. Therefore, ceremonies for departed family members are held on the new moon at the beginning of the month.
Though ancestor Bali (rites) are conducted on various days, any Bali presented on Vavu (the new moon) is considered the most auspicious.
On Karkidaka Vavu, enormous crowds gather to conduct the 'Bali Tharpanam' ceremony in many holy rivers, temples, and seashores around Kerala. Varkala Papanasam beach is one of the day's key religious sites.
Licenced priests lead the rites in large pandals where many individuals can undertake the ceremony at the same time.
On this day, the Bali performer fasts and is only permitted to eat one supper of rice - a practice known as Erika (meaning 'once'). The rest of the household can eat rice for three meals a day. Non-vegetarian food is forbidden on that day. However, most Kerala homes create a particular recipe of steamed rice known as 'Vavu ADA.'
