In linguistics, there is this term dissimilation which essentially means what it sounds like it means — it’s a linguistic process in which similar sounds (i.e. consonants or vowels) become less similar. This is often done in order to make words easier to say or to avoid repeating identical structures. Usually it’s pretty predictable: if there is the right linguistic environment for it, then the sounds will be changed. People don’t want to stumble over a mouth full of the same syllables, after all. Yet, this process can also be sporadic and unexpected.
