Kat!!! I love you so much. ❤️I was really, really hoping you'd read this sucker and enjoy it. The hot dog party shirt... is based on a true story involving a blond-haired, blue-eyed, bagel-wielding guy who I might happen to be married to. Where. did. he. get. that. douchy. shirt? Probably Goodwill. That's where he gets all his stuff.

I will resist making jokes about Nathan's footlong coney, but we all know it's delicious and satisfying. Famous, even. To be enjoyed with relish.

Sadly, I never did live in NYC (but I'm pleased af I had you wondering about it!). I've gone there a bunch for work and play over the years, and I've got friends who live there, so I know some of its nooks and crannies and dirty little secrets. Nathan's and Miriam's favorite things to do on a day off are the same as mine... Barcade in Williamsburg and Film Biz Recycling in Gowanus (RIP, that place was fucking phenomenal). I'll probably need to get back there and roam around before embarking on Jasper's story. I like to write what I know (or at least semi-know).

You pretty much already read the story that's coming out in the charity anthology, but the one I'm writing now I think might interest you! It rhymes with burrata. 😉 Thank you so much for having my back all these many years.

🐾 Before Halloween, a gorgeous dark pearl gray cat (quite possibly Spellbound Kat!niss) played peekaboo with me—and, more to the point, my 70-pound rescue dog 😆—from behind someone’s Halloween decor gravestone and skeleton! 💀 It was sooooo cute. I mean, it went from one side to to the other, looked high, looked low.

The semester was... good but trying. Busy. Very busy. It felt like I was constantly working on school work and never had time for my kids. They noticed. My oldest went so far as to look at me one night when I was clearly stressed and had five books and two notebooks spread around my laptop, and say "Okay I'm not going to college if this is what it looks like." I'm like NO! That's not the attitude. Just try not to do it as a PARENT *crazed laughter in the background*. Anyways, that part was Not Good, so we're dialing back the number of classes I'm taking next semester and it'll just take me longer to finish. The good part of the semester? I loved every single one of my classes and half the reason I was so worked up was because I wanted to do WELL. I did, so at least there's that!

Oh god I don’t know how I forgot to mention My Sweet Audrina. That book had everything and the kitchen sink in it as far as fucked up things went.

@katamount​ talked in this post about SC’s methods of describing people. She mentioned Katniss’ description of her mother as harsh and it got me thinking.

This might be a case of Katniss showing her teenagerhood. Yes, it’s not that nice to say other people said your mom was beautiful once, but there might be more going on.

<story time> There are 2 girls and 2 boys in my family. Me and my brother favored my dad, and my other brother and sister favored my mom. I was very much a daddy’s girl, and loved looking like him. I also appreciated the symmetry and balance we all had as a group. 

Then puberty happened. Every day, I looked more and more like my mom. I kind of resented it. It was weird. I’ve always thought my mom was a total stunner and it took me some time to realize I just might become a total stunner too. Teenager-ing is hard and I didn’t want to deal with it, my best guess is that I felt like I was losing something and the loss was emotionally exhausting. There was a period of time when I knew I was looking more like my mom, but wasn’t ok with it yet. When people would tell me my mom was pretty, I’d shrug and say, “Yeah, I guess so, whatever.”

I got much better at handling it as I got older. Especially when I realized there’s nothing wrong with looking like my mom. She’s awesome. Now I look just like her and that’s fine by me. And when someone says she’s pretty, I take it as a lowkey compliment for me too and enthusiastically reply, “Isn’t she?” </story time>

So I write all that to say, maybe Katniss can’t quite cop to her mom’s beauty because 1. she doesn’t see herself as all that pretty and 2. recognizes that she looks like her mom. Those 2 facts might not mesh well in her teen mind. We know that she sees the prep team’s work as some kind of magic spell over her even though they don’t do any major permanent treatments. Maybe they just gave her enough distance to see herself and her mom and something beautiful all at the same time.

So for Katniss, who heavily identifies with and idolizes her father, any tie to him (Seam coloring) is heavily emphasized while things that connect her to her mother are de-emphasized. Looking like her mother could feel like she’s losing her dad all over again. And like he’s disappearing from her world. So she’s fighting the connection.
