Kate Winslet Says Shailene Woodley and Theo James Have It Harder Than She and Leo Did
Kate Winslet feels for Shailene Woodley and Theo James. The Oscar winner, who plays villain to their heroes in The Divergent Series, was one-half of the most popular screen couple of the 1990s after starring in the record-breaking smash Titanic with Leonardo DiCaprio. It felt like Kate and Leo were everywhere during Titanicmania. But Winslet tells Yahoo Movies that social media and the 24-hour news cycle has made life much more difficult for young movie stars today than it was two decades ago.
"What Leo and I experienced with Titanic is incredibly incredible similar to what Shai and Theo have experienced with Divergent and now Insurgent, as well,? she says in the video above. ?But it?s very different for them now, I think with social media being what it is and the power of the Internet. They are exposed to a lot more, they get to hear other people?s opinions a lot more, not just the press but the fans as well. And that?s potentially huge pressure. And for Leo and myself, we didn?t have anything like that. If we didn?t want to read a review, we just didn?t look at the paper. You could just ignore it. Whereas now you just hear it, it?s in the ether. It?s hard to escape from.?

As for her own dealings with media and fan attention due to the hugely popular Divergent franchise? Winslet, 39, says her ?considerably smaller role? makes that a non-factor, especially compared to the attention thrust on Woodley and James. ?They?re hot young things,? she says, ?whereas I?m just an old-timer these days.? We?d beg to differ.
The Divergent Series: Insurgent opens March 21.
The Women of 'Insurgent' Talk About the Franchise's Unprecedented Female Empowerment
As far as major movie franchises go, The Divergent Series has the most woman power of them all. Not only is the story built around an irrepressibly strong heroine in Tris (Shailene Woodley) in a dystopian future ruled by iron-willed villainess Jeanine (Kate Winslet), the new second installment, Insurgent, introduces two more women in charge: diplomatic head of Amity Johanna (Octavia Spencer), and the rebellious Factionless leader Evelyn (Naomi Watts).
Name another major movie series where all of the people in positions of power are women. Go ahead, we?ll wait?
"Both the hero and the villain are played by girls, and that?s cool!" Winslet told Yahoo Movies. "That?s unusual, unique, and that?s cool." See what else Winslet and her co-stars had to say about the film?s unprecedented female empowerment in the video above.
Insurgent is now in theaters.
