After checking the apartment for bugs, Colin crashes date night, if only to make sure Katie knows what kind of danger might be following her. (another former asset!Katie installment)
He spent over an hour in the apartment, checking every surface and the back of every frame hung on the walls. Colin even checked a few less likely places, wanting to ensure there wasn't a single recording device anywhere in the apartment. If he missed one in his own apartment, it didn't matter anyway - the chances of him sleeping in his own bed that night were less than zero, especially if there was even a fraction of a possibility that the lock of the door could be picked again.
Either he would be invited into the spare bedroom again, or he would let himself in to set up watch on the couch. He wasn't that picky about it.
There had been three bugs hidden around the small space. One was in the kitchen, hidden under the lip of the cabinet where it would be just out of sight. Another was in the living room, on the back of the painting of the little house with a picket fence around the yard. He tried not read into that one too closely, tried not to let his mind drift back to Montana and the time they spent there. That was before Mindanao, before everything changed, before he knew he was being lied to the entire time.
The third bug was barely even hidden. It wasn't put where it was left to surveil, it was put there as a message. In the main bedroom, right on the corner of a picture frame where it was almost obvious, it seemed to stare directly at him. A toddler would have found it immediately, let alone a trained agent like Bill or himself. But that was the least of his worries, then. How unconcealed the bug was didn't make him grit his teeth. Where it was did.
