His artistic works are remarkable, and impressive. A large part of what makes this artist persona fascinating is that, he is also a Scientist.
Prof. Dr. Aly Abdul Rahman Aly Soliman El-Sohby. Born November 5, 1956. Cairo. He is known and recognized as the Egyptian Sculptor. He is currently the Professor of Sculpture and Faculty member of Specific Education at the highly reputable University, Ain Shams in Cairo, Egypt.
When asked of Prof. Dr. Aly Abdul when he had discovered his interest in the arts he says during his first Exhibition in 1977 in Colored Sculpture. He and his outstanding works have been honored, and recognized a great number of times throughout his careered involvement with the arts.
Prof. Dr. Aly El-Sohby, which is the name he prefers to be recognized by, received his PhD in Art Education, and majored in sculpture from Helwan University in 1991. He has published numerous doctrines on artistic specification backed up by applied scientific exploration, specifically surrounding the study of color in art. Apparently, he is onto something great in this particular area of exploration because of the number of awards received for his scientific research in the field of modern and contemporary sculpture.
What is most intriguing about this Artist/Scientist works is his process. There is something about his sculptural pieces that draws you in. The observer recognizes right away that there is something just a bit different about them. You may not be able to put your finger on what’s so different about his work right away, but you just know that something is. The colors used to create his sculptural pieces pop out at you. His use of color makes the 3D image appear lively creating this illusion of forms, line, shape, and space. Thus, it is actually the colors that draw you to the work and make you want to further examine them up close. He’s able to do this successfully due to his applied research and knowledge of the use of color to create illusion.
Similar to the well-known Franciso De Goya, Spanish artist (1746-1828). Romantic Painter, who’s painterly technique used large blotches of color to help create and communicate form. To expound on that statement a bit and make the connection. Goya style of artistry is termed “rococo,” which comes from the French rocaile, referenced to “rock-work.” This style is rooted in historical architectural decoration based on arabesques, shells, elaborate curves, and asymmetry. Whereas, Dr. Aly El-Sohby advanced the technique used by two-dimensional artist in his sculptural artworks. The ways in which he plays with color and tones in order to produce variances in texture and then in return this technical use provides his work with natural shadow and light and adds to his works mysterious colors that the viewer may be unaware of its pull. Basically put, the artist uses color as a master of two-dimensional works creating illusion of variant distances, shape, space, line, and form.
Borrowed excerpts from, Ed McCormick writings in Art Mold Journal. Dr. El-Sohby describes the motivation of his works, along with his specific use of color methodology. “My mathematical formulas incorporate the recurrence of forms and colors using ratios. I developed the mathematics method while experimenting over time. The system is fundamental to uniting of the relationships between elements.”
I asked Dr. El-Sohby, what does your work represent and how would you describe yourself, and your work? His response was, “My work in Colored Sculpture represent many things like holes, birds, human relations, and Abstract works. Space. Faces. My colored sculptures have the color ability to control the external characteristics of the materials, so that the color becomes the texture instead of the material’s surface. This would give space for forming colorful Sculptural modeling with absolute freedom that is not constrained by characteristics previously known beforehand for the material used. This represents a unique phenomenon in the entire history of art that only contemporary sculpture opened its arms.”
It is without a doubt that the well refined and talented Prof. Dr. EL-Sohby has added to the world of Contemporary Art a new concept of exploration and earned a rightful place of recognition for his contribution and sculptural work.
