A deli horror story
It's ten minutes til 8, slicers are clean, there's plenty of meat cut. A customer stops by the meat case, browsing our selection. "Can I help you with anything?" I ask, approaching the counter. He looks for a moment more, then utters the words any deli employee will cringe at: "I'd like half a pound of herb and garlic chicken." I search the case, hoping to find some already cut, but I'm out of luck. Next I search for the open chub of meat. Again, no such luck. "I'll have to grab one from the back," I announce, hoping the customer will be gracious enough to tell me not to worry about it. I get a silent nod in response. I find a clean knife and a clean pan to use to open the chicken in, still hoping the customer will change his mind. I try to squeeze off any juices that might be packed into the coating of the chicken, but it still makes a terrible mess of the perfectly clean slicer.
