19. Smoke - Otyken [Listen on Youtube]
“Here, Sarge,” Luz says, and pulls one of the two new-lit cigarettes out of his mouth, “you’re gonna love it. Lucky Strikes. That’s the good stuff.” “Thanks,” Lipton says, and smiles down at Luz’ hands as he takes it. Luz doesn’t take it personal. It’s too fucking cold to expose much of your eyes by looking up, unless you’ve absolutely got to. “We get a supply drop?” Luz asks, as he takes a puff. “Thought I saw them fly over a few hours ago. At least, I know I saw them, and I’m hoping they were Americans.” Lipton shrugs. “Compton took it,” he says, and shifts where he’s sitting. They’re pressed together on a log, not wanting to go back to foxholes, not wanting to get up for their rotations yet. “I think so. We need some more coats.” “We need some more cigarettes,” Luz tells him. “I can’t keep collecting all these favors, Lip, can you make it happen for me or what?” Lipton grins at him. “Just to be clear,” he says, “I’m not ‘owing you a favor’ for the smokes, Luz. I’m commandeering them, as your superior officer.”
Also I could not find an exact version of the recording from my Spotify on Youtube, since this group is a lot more present on Spotify, but I wanted to stick to linking on YT so that these songs aren't potentially paywalled for folks who don't want to pay for a premium account. I'm a man of the people, Basically, Is What I'm Saying
Send me a character or ship, and a number between 1-100, and I’ll write a flash fic based on my Spotify Wrapped!
Take Kick to a child psychologist
I watched Kick Buttowski. Then I watched him again, and again, and... some more times. Apparently, it was better for me to remember this than the lectures at the university.
And I became sadder and sadder about the way Kick was shown and the place he had in his family.
Kick is a typical middle child, he stays away from his family. But only as long as it doesn't cause trouble.
(Kick causes inconvenience to his family and neighbors with his tricks, so they want to send him to some kind of children's concentration camp. Kick is being punished on an ongoing basis because of Miss Cicarelli's complaints. Although everything ends well there in the end. Kick is being punished for the fact that he and Brianna kind of broke the air conditioner. In fact, Harold just took the cheap shit, which he was explicitly told about. But Kick was punished anyway, yes.) or until they need something from him (the family turns to Kick for help so that he defeats his father in ping-pong; Honey asks Kick to guard the cookies from Harold; Harold fucking needs Kick to play the piano- classical kids trauma).
The rest of the time, he's on his own.
And this behavior of parents usually affects children in the form of hyperresponsibility. This applies to Kick. He's pretty responsible in his own right (for a ten-year-old boy, I mean). He also often takes on quite difficult cases out of naivety and EXTREME self-confidence... or because he sees no other way for himself.
I've often heard from people who watched the show as kids that they didn't perceive Kick as a ten-year-old. It's easy to forget about Kick's age because of his “tough guy" image.
Perhaps the saddest thing for me in my stupid theory is that the Kick sees himself only as a “tough guy” aka “adult", not as a child.
Kick doesn't even require attention from his family. Although he wants to, judging by the episode with grandma.
He invites her to look at his trick and grandma starts jokingly telling the reasons why she can't do it. KICK'S SMILE LITERALLY SLIPS OFF HIS FACE WHEN HE HEARS THIS.
My heart…
He did not discuss his hobbies with anyone from his family (even with his mother, although it would be logical- she is a former daredevil) and did not ask to watch his tricks. This boy doesn't have enough adults around. Adults who will say “start your hurdy-gurdy” and let him be a child.
Conclusion: I'm adopting Kick Buttowski.
