I think the toxic debate climate today has a lot to do with filter bubbles. Not just the bubbles you put yourself in by blocking and unfriending, but also by the bubbles that you are nudged into by automated scripts and algorithms.
If you haven't even consented to shielding yourself from opposing viewpoints, you may never find out that they exist. But in a functioning society we need to interact with those who oppose us, at least occasionally. Not just to mentally “inoculate” ourselves to them, but also to train ourself in tolerance, and the noble art of minding our own business.
Those who stay deep within their bubbles get neither, and when they eventually get confronted with opposition they are unable to handle it maturely.
