This is a newly formed beach at Columbia Glacier near Valdez, Alaska, and it exists only at low tide. #Columbiaglacier is the largest tidewater glacier in Prince William Sound, but it is retreating quickly....sometimes as much as a mile in a year. When the ice calves off the face of the glacier, it falls hundreds of feet and shatters when it hits the ocean, making a sound very much like a thunderstorm. The ocean here is filled with pieces of glacier ice...some as big as a football field, and some, like these in my photo, are small enough to float close to shore with the high tide, and then get stranded when the tide goes back out. . This pic os from my first time on this beach and it’s likely Mr. YogiPilot and I were the first humans to ever walk this shore...it’s that new, and that remote. As the ice retreats, it deposits rock and sand and silt that forms new beaches, where there was once only ice. .
