How I Made My Keith Boots- A (not really) Cosplay Tutorial
So before I start please ignore the images, most were taken on my phone so the quality isn't great. This tutorial isn’t as much of a tutorial as it is an explanation for how I personally made my boots (first cosplay shoes I have worked on). Thanks to @knightshade94 for helping with this project!
Materials I used:
These boots
Black Vinyl
Red Stretch Fabric
Red Leather paint
6 strong Magnets
Painters Tape
Paint brushes
Needle
Thread
1. I started off my journey of making Keith’s boots by finding knee high white boots that were similar enough to his. I ended up finding these boots, which had the correct shape but had strappy bits across the front. This did not matter because I was planning on redoing the boots any way.
2. Once the boots arrived I tried them on to make sure that the boot looked correct on me (ordered the wrong size but I dealt with it).
3. Now that I had my boots I devised a plan of how to make them into Keith’s boots.
The original plan was to cover the straps by sewing black fabric on top of the center of the boot and sewing a red cuff onto the boot and gluing the rest of the red to make the toe portion. Since I was to be gluing the fabric, I went with fabric that does not fray.
This plan, however, did not work. I could not get any needle (including a leather needle) through the boot. So, sewing directly to the boot was out of the question. In my frustration I found that I could slip a strip of black being the straps on the boot. The fabric was tight enough behind the straps that it did not move at all. I had found a partial solution to my sewing problem.
4. Now I just had to figure out how to cover the straps. I decided to just sew loops of black around the straps. Sewing the vinyl to itself and not to the impossible to sew boot. Now I had the black strip to Keith’s boot.
5. The cuff was the next part to tackle, I ended up sewing cuffs out of the stretch fabric and, since they stretched, seemed to hold to the boot themselves…unless of course you started to walk. Surprisingly I found out the wonders of using magnets, and with a few smartly place magnets my cuff stayed in place.
6. The last step was to add the red tips to the boots. I grabbed some leather paint and with the help from a friend we laid out the design in tap and just layered red paint onto the boots. After a few coats and a day of drying the boots were now complete.
7. This whole thing probably took about 3 days of actual work and cost about $70 in total. I know the boots are missing the black part at the top and the black lines, but with the issues I ran into with this project (such as now being able to actually sew onto the boots) I am satisfied with how they turned out.
If i may ask? what kiind of boots did u use for ur keith cosplay?
i used these buuuuut i’m about to replace them with some shorter ones due to my own preference! if you like them a little taller i do recommend the ones i used though!
