Usually their poses are based off of something I was thinking about/roleplaying in my head. The rest of the time I just really want to draw them; I use a reference (either one I found or made. I use my own posing sometimes) to get down the basic pose and I workshop them from there. Obi-Wan's face likes to give me grief but over the past week I really feel like I've honed him. Not on Lasagna or Frostbite's level but I'm happy with where I am now.

Cody is a beloved the character guy to me so I'm always happy to draw him, which most times results in a codywan piece. Not always though. For the clones (ie: mr. Matching Lightsaber Clip) I sometimes use references. If I'm not using a reference I'll look back over the drawing with a reference after taking a break so that I have distance and can examine the drawing with a fresh set of eyes.

TL;DR Usually codywan poses are from the dome, but sometimes I draw them in a pose I saw in a reference (or made) because it Worked for #them.

I can't believe I'm an inspo (holy kriff !) but it genuinely warms my heart to have an impact on other artists like that

I was ecstatic to see more people making codywan art. Smiled like a dork. I love your style and the cute little moments you draw. You're very good at drawing tender expressions. I can feel the emotion. I also really enjoy the little comics that sometimes show in your pieces.

hi hi tell me about your art process!!! what is your favorite medium and tools and what do you like about them? what how do you generally start artworks? do you collect/take reference photos? do you make thumbnails first? walk me through your process as you work on your piece. what are the steps you take and how do you feel as you go about them? feel free to be as pretentious sounding as possible - give me your passion (and photos and videos if possible 🥺)

I've also been on a bit of a hiatus...

I'm a traditional artist, and I (very very) rarely will use a digital art program to colour over a trad. piece, but i find i prefer using..

my favourite medium is probably mixed media paper, and a very specific brand of paper that I cannot find because they stopped producing it a couple decades ago (according to my local art store). It has an incredible grain and I love to use graphite on it and coloured pencils. Sketch paper is fine but smudges, and I don't really use it all that much. I like to have my options open for dry and wet colours.

Tools

You see me work with graphite the most on my blog here, though i do use other art mediums. So.. it's like (this is most to least used and favourability)

1. graphite

2. pen — the ol ballpoint. i like how it challenges me. it's calming in a way, and makes the margin of error smaller; it seems easier to not make mistakes.

3. marker — just water based (do i look like i can afford alcohol based?) ones. I have some Sargent (hand me downs) and Staedtler ones, nothing professional, these are for having fun! I like to get loose with art and free up the stress of worrying about fucking it up by using the vibrant tones of marker. @jupitermover is a great inspiration for having fun with colour.

4. coloured pencil — territory that i have to be in the mindset for or just happen to have them near me. it's usually the latter. When in Rome and all that. I've been meaning to study an art blog's style on here.. @camelidae creates beautiful illustrations, some fantastical, of nature and animals.

5. watercolour and gouache (2fer) — not used as frequently as the above 4 but deserves its' flowers; great for flat washes and great shadows and contrast, i like gouache for its' opacity, since it reminds me of acrylic, something i worked with a TON for a while, years ago.

and i really like to combine mediums as well. since watercolour works 50/50 with me, i tend to do a flat wash then build up the colours using pencil.

I also enjoy using pen then having fun with markers, like a colouring book :D

When it comes to tools: an art class will have you buying one william art supplies. more than half of them will go to rot in a drawer when the semester is over. As someone who has used all manner of art supplies — i use a 2b standard "school" pencil for most drawings, with a Mars Staedtler plastic eraser. When I'm not using that, I have a blue .7mm HB Pentel drafting mech pencil that I found 6 years ago.

How do i start artworks?

the easiest way to explain it: a strike of inspiration. I tend to want to draw all the time, but since I don't really feel comfortable drawing at home anymore, I really only get time to draw when I'm at my friend's house. Since we're both big fucking nerds sbout StarWars (can't believe I've only been into this for a year and some change. feels like I've loved StarWars for years. Whaddahell). I start with a doodle, usually Cody shaped in nature, and it unfolds from there, and my friend offers up prompts and I have fun with it. It loosens up my hand and allows me to be less contained in what I draw. Having prompts really eases some of the guesswork out of figuring out what to draw.

Some artworks start with my brain going ouggjggjfh write that down. Most times however, I'm in the mood for a specific vibe, so I scroll through my art references (many references. I'm trying to sort them into separate folders at this time, to sort bodies and nonhuman animals away from clothes). So Yes, I do collect reference photos, because anytime I see a compelling image I must have it. I also make reference photos of my own, by taking pictures of myself in the positions I need, and using my photos to create bases to work off of. Just recently I used a picture of myself holding my lightsaber to draw Luke! I needed to draw him in a dark room with his saber lighting up his face, and I wanted to do it in coloured pencil as well. So I took a picture of myself in the position I imagined him in, and adjusted accordingly (which wasn't very much, shockingly.)

Do I make thumbnails?

I don't usually make thumbnails unless I'm doing a huge piece, and most of what you see on my blog here never went through a thumbnail stage, despite my encouraging others to use thumbnails and gesture..

I think I'll make a separate post detailing my process. since that would work better. I should gitgüd at responding to things though...
