My design for Kellen - first book, second half
Well this took a dark turn
First half design
SPOILERS FOR THE FIRST BOOK!!!
When I read the book, it feels as if it's divided into two parts: before and after his shadowblack outbreaks and he gets most of his bands counterbanded. Between those parts there are 5 days he spends strapped to a table in his dad's room, so I figured he probably spent the second part of the book looking like hell. Poor guy :(
Blabbering about my design choices:
꩜ so I figured that in contrast to his tidy look in the first design, he needs to look REALLY unkempt. I made his hair a lot more messy and messed up the buttons on his shirt. Also, I thought he probably fell a few times, so there is mud on his knees.
꩜ he practically run away from his home the second he could, so I assumed he didn't bring his shoes. As a result, his feet are dirty and a bit bloody.
꩜ he didn't sleep a lot in the five days his father counterbanded his bands, and he understandably cried a lot, so I gave him even worse eye bags then before, and made his eyes red and watery :'(
꩜ he has his shadowblack now! It's in a really early stage, so it's a small spiral near the eye. ꩜ from this point on in the book, he uses his powders, so I made the tips of his fingers stained in black and red. I also kept his pouch, so that he cound store them somewhere.
꩜ it was really important for me to keep the same clothes as in my first design, just ruin them. His white vest is gone and so are his shoes, but he kept the same shirt, pants and fabric piece at the waist/belt
꩜ it's a bit more of a headcanon, but in the second book Shalla tracks him using his blood she found on their father's desk. This made me realize that he probably bled from his arms, and a lot because his father made his counterbands really thick, in order to block his magic for good. In addition to his arms bleeding, I thought he probably didn't want to look at his arms and see the counterbands, so he probably wanted to cover up his forearms. So as a result, he has bloody makeshift bandages on his arms.
꩜ the most important thing for me was to make sure he looks haunted, tense and miserable. It's sad but that's how he feels :(
꩜ the black swirl is supposed to represent the Shadowblack haha
Close ups!
A redraw of this kellen fanart I did some time ago
The og for reference
I can’t believe how much I improved like im so proud of myself
Dexan Videris is so fascinating to me. That's probably not his real name. He's an outlaw mage. He's a spellslinger. He's a con artist. He has a pet alligator. He's a foil to the mentor character. The main character stole his hat. He controls worms. Spy worms he puts inside rich kid's eyes. It's never explained how he put the worms inside the eyes. Does he break into houses and stand above the kids holding half a giant worm? He was a petty criminal until he got caught and forced to become a war criminal. He lives in a cave. You might think it's a demon talking, but it's just dexan talking to you through his bracelet. He wears a cowboy hat. He's canonically hot. He doesn't like violence but he finds ferius so annoying he just has to punch her in the face a couple of times. He knows sfx makeup. His pet alligator is mind controlled. He definitely abused bugs as a kid. He's an evil magic cowboy. I love him.
listening to spellslinger again.
I think there’s a lot to say about Spellslinger and masculinity. Low-key I think masculinity is a pretty major theme in the series. Like it’s not on the surface, but Kellen’s journey is very much tied to letting go of toxic ideals of masculinity and finding your own path to becoming a man despite it.
crazy, because every decent thing Kellen has learned about being a man has come from a rage baiting lesbian who cheats at cards.
That awkward moment when you accidentally stop your brother's heart.
Why have intrusive thoughts when you can have a Reichis, which is a lot worse
Silly sketches/doodles of these two idiots idjits
Apparently I have a thing for books that have a small fandom (and a mmc named Kel) 🙂↕️🙂↕️🫠
