“Must there be a secret me…”
Lei’s father was a high ranking member of a Chinese gang, one that aimed to make life better for everyday people and protect them from the more nefarious gangs. The gang was established for almost a century and throughout that time, its members faced a lot of violence and many of them got hurt or died. Her father was shot, nearly killed during one of these battles, the man took it with pride, standing tall, or as tall as he could. The threat of him being called out to another fight hung over the family’s head and they knew he would likely die should that ever happen. If Lei had been a man, she could have gone in his stead but the rules of the gang were clear: No women and death to liars and cheats. If she concealed her identity and was found out, she would be killed and bring dishonour to her family.
To keep her from making a dangerous decision, her family sent her to the Yensid institute when they got a letter. They hope that she would become more ladylike and refined at such a prestigious institution, little do they know their aims to lead their daughter down a dangerous path. Lei has access to people who know how to fight, martial arts lessons, people who make costumes and even brilliant military minds. The thought has been growing in her mind, impersonate a man to protect her father, for the good of the gang and for the good of her family.
