While living abroad, we've been staying in Taiwan for a few weeks, then going out to travel throughout Asia for a week or two, and repeat. We always miss @halflionhalfpup so much when we're gone. Today's safari activity was riding in an open top jeep though Chitwan National Park. It was hard to capture in pictures, but we were able to see many rhinos, deer, monkeys, an elephant and her baby, and peacocks, all in their natural environment. We saw tiger tracks, but had just missed seeing the tiger by a few minutes. After that, we went on a river safari where we coasted down the river in a boat, viewing animals that lived in the banks of the river, such as alligators, rhinos, and birds. After we fed the elephants, we went for a walk with them in Chitwan National Park. They got some exercise and also got to eat some more (the leaves and branches didn't look that tasty, but they seemed to really love them). The elephants were also there to protect us, just in case any animals charged at us. Our first activity at Tiger Tops was sandwich making for the elephants! This was the first time both @kale_ylin and I have ever been this up close to an elephant 😬. We were timid at first, but then realized how smart and gentle they were. The sandwiches were made of grass, rice, chickpeas, molasses, and salt 🤤. Sung Sot Cave (Surprising Cave) is the largest cave in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. It was first discovered by the French in 1901, who took it upon themselves to name it "Grotte des Surprises" , or Surprising Cave, because of its 'surprising' beauty. The cave welcomed its first visitors in 1993, one year before Ha Long Bay received it's World Heritage site status from UNESCO. From 520-470 million BC, Ha Long Bay was subject to intense tectonic plate movements, along with severe rainfall and flooding which caused the formation of underwater mountains. Millions of years on, the Ha Long Bay area began to experience a period of extreme heat and drought. The change in weather patterns is what eventually contributed to the emergence of the thick limestone formations that we can still see today. Now that we've settled in, we're ready to explore Asia. This Kelly and her parents' first time in Vietnam, and my second. We're spending one night in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ha Long Bay (meaning descending dragon). Ha Long Bay features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various shapes and sizes. The evolution of the karst in this bay has taken 20 million years under the impact of the tropical wet climate. Historical research surveys have shown the presence of prehistoric human beings in this area tens of thousands years ago. According to local legend, when Vietnam had just started to develop into a country, they had to fight against invaders. To assist the Vietnamese in defending their country, the gods sent a family of dragons as protectors. This family of dragons began spitting out jewels and jade. These jewels turned into the islands and islets dotting the bay, linking together to form a great wall against the invaders. Under magics, numerous rock mountains abruptly appeared on the sea, ahead of invaders' ships; the forward ships struck the rocks and each other. What are we doing now that we've moved to Taiwan? We're full time dog pawrents 🙌. Dog parks here are huge compared to NYC and @halflionhalfpup is getting to go play there almost everyday. He's also getting to spend time with his aunt @hola_klover and meeting lots of new frens.
