White Ring “Nothing” (2018)
Everyone was shocked to hear about Kendra Malia’s passing. Our witch-house awareness started with Atari Teenage Riot’s remix of Salem’s “Better Off Alone”, and White Ring became one of our stand-outs with big thanks to “Leprosy” (’18) and Adina Viarengo’s involvement with The Feel, a New England outfit that has absolutely nothing to do with the witch- sound. A surge of new material means their fans who’ve waited since 2011′s “Hey Hey, My My” / “Felt U“ have their thirst quenched starting with last year’s Gate Of Grief, the new Slow Burned 7″ (’19), and a couple of B-sides and outtake compilations. Omega WUSB’s darkness sets are on their way to open Year Eight and we’re looking at “Nothing” for inclusion. Last winter we played “Leprosy” for its shocking, heart-throbbing qualities. It appears again as the AA-side to this single, a more dizzying array of slow trudging one-two rhythms hitting hard and fighting against repeated stingers and evil atmospheres, all submerging Viarengo’s lyrics. “Nothing” was a 2009 demo made during Bryan Kurkimilis and Malia’s early days, resurrected with Viarengo’s first contributions to the flagship witch-house outfit and both cuts here deems this 7″ one of our favorites. No matter the line-up, you can’t help but to appreciate nothing but all the good White Ring has done.
r.i.p. Kendra Malia.
Rest in Peace, Kendra Malia (1982-2019)
