Two Legends Move Away : Virat Kohli , Rohit Sharma After Historic Win Announce Decision To Retire From T20 Internationals

Two legends of Indian cricket Virat Kohli, captain Rohit Sharma also bid farewell to the T20 format after lifting the T20 World Cup trophy.

India’s victory in the 2007 World Cup marked the beginning of Rohit’s remarkable T20I career. In 2024, it appears that he has come full circle with this event. With the retirement from the T20 format, Rohit also said the final goodbye to the captaincy spot that he held for more than two years.

Rohit announced that he was retiring from the shortest format but that he would still play for India in Test and ODI formats.

Shortly after teammate Virat Kohli declared his retirement from Twenty20 international cricket, Rohit made his declaration.

“This was my last game as well,” the captain said in his post-match press conference, referring to Virat Kohli’s earlier announcement that he will be retiring from T20Is.

“I’ve enjoyed it since the time I started playing this format. No better time to say goodbye to this format. I’ve loved every moment of this. This is what I wanted – I wanted to win the cup,” and he saluted the room, to applause from the media.

He already expressed his gratitude to coach Rahul Dravid for his contributions to the sport by dedicating the T20 World Cup victory to him.

“What he has done for Indian cricket for the past 20, 25 years, this was the only thing left. I am very happy on behalf of the entire team that we could do this for him,” Rohit said.

He also spoke highly of his teammates, praising bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah in particular as well as the retiring Virat Kohli.

“I am very lucky to have players like this in my squad, players who are playing for me and Team India – really, really grateful and thankful as well,” he added.

When asked if it was the pinnacle of his career, Rohit acknowledged that it was undoubtedly among the top moments to date.

“This has to be the greatest time. I can say that. It’s only because of how desperately I wanted to win this. All the runs that I’ve scored in all these years, it does matter but I’m not big on stats and all of that. Winning games for India, winning trophies for India – that is what I look forward to all the time,” Rohit said.

It was all smiles and a feeling of jubilation when Rohit came close to lift the trophy he desired most. The youngster who struck 30 in the inaugural edition of the competition to help India lift the trophy stood at the centerstage after 17 years. In a single moment, the heartbreak of seven months ago felt like a story of a different lifetime.

His life came full circle after he joined his long compatriot Virat Kohli to bid adieu to the format in which he thrived and gave the opposition bowlers a run for their money.

With 4231 runs in 159 games, Rohit is the format’s best scorer going out. He also owns the record for most hundreds (five) in T20 internationals. He has won two T20 World Cups: the first in 2007 while competing and the current one in 2024 as captain.

Ponting Confirms Being In Active Talks To Coach Washington Freedom In MLC

Major League Cricket: Legendary Australia captain Ricky Ponting confirmed that he is in active talks to coach the Washington Freedom side in the second edition of the Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA.In the inaugural MLC season in 2023, which has been backed financially by various IPL sides, Washington, who were coached by Greg Shipperd, had finished at third place after losing to MI New York by 16 runs in the Eliminator. "We're not there yet, I haven't committed to anything just yet. There have been some discussions. I haven’t committed to anything just yet but I’ve had some initial chats. The time of the year (when the MLC is on) fits in for me," said Ponting to SEN Radio. The second edition of MLC will begin just four days after the Men’s T20 World Cup final is played at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 30. Before that, Ponting will be coaching Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024. As of now, he’s not been confirmed yet to commentate on 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup. "I’ve got a few weeks now before the IPL which rolls into the T20 World Cup and the MLC is immediately after the World Cup. It’s potentially another big year of time away if I want it. There’s just some stuff that I have to work through. If I'm actually going to be commentating the T20 World Cup or not and if I'm not doing that, where does MLC fit in?" he added. Ponting had previously been at the helm for Mumbai Indians in the IPL and served in an assistant coach capacity under Justin Langer for the Australian team, notably in the 2019 Men’s ODI World Cup. "I like the coaching side of things and I’ve enjoyed my time at the IPL in the past six to seven years. I’ve been able to help around the Australian team on a couple of tours when Justin Langer was coach. The game is in my blood and I love working with the best players in the world and trying to find a way to make them a bit better. Buju Rocks Kensington Oval

Ten years is a long time. It’s even longer when you have to go without hearing the gravel sounding voice of reggae legend Buju Banton live and direct. Barbadian fans were relieved from their agony on Saturday night when the strains of ‘Our father, who art in Zion’ echoed through Kensington Oval. Some opening lines backstage of Destiny and then finally the tall figure of Buju glided effortlessly across the stage as he chanted ‘I wanna rule my Destiny’. While he certainly has a chance now to rule his destiny in terms of the choices he makes going forward, for an hour and fifteen minutes he ruled over the masses at Kensington. Hit after hit poured forth effortlessly, and it was lapped up by a crowd thirsty for good reggae music.  It’s Not an Easy road gave way to strains of Close One Yesterday.

There was one breathtaking moment when the band went quiet, then the poignant strains of a saxophone broke the haunting silence with a riveting intro. The guitarist then proceeded to strum the first strains of Untold Stories. It was at this moment that you knew that Buju had soared to the level of reggae spiritual stardom reserved for an elect few. ‘When mama spend her last and send you go class never you ever play’ he chided, a sobering reminder of the quality of his lyrics and intended impact on society. A voice crying for the masses while imploring change to leaders and inspiring the downtrodden.

The lovers were not left out. Wanna Be Loved, Love Sponge and One to One were delivered with aplomb. It was a performance Barbados had waited for and interspersed with some bashment selections whetted the appetite of the dancehall minded partygoers of the 90s era. Mr. Nine reminded the youths of the dangers of guns and introduced a spiritual dialogue where he encouraged the youths to not fall prey to the pressures of society. It was telling that Murderer would follow later.

What more is there to be said? I could go on and on but the full will never be told.  Welcome back Buju as we wait patiently to welcome you back again.
