Jana Keppens - (Il)legible City (2012)
(Il)legible city addresses the phenomenon of our current cities becoming more and more an accumulation of text and images. The result being that a lot of visual information doesn't communicate optimally but is being experienced as noise.
For this project, an intervention in the city of Brussels, I stuck messages and labelled different sources of visual information in the city. They were intended as a sort of appraisal, and by engaging with the 'invisible' information it became visible again. This paper - distributed around the city centre - documented my intervention but also included a selection of the different labels. People were able to cut them out, copy them and hang them in the streets on different sorts of visual language. So residents also had the opportunity to have a say about how they experienced visual information in the city.
