DAVE didn’t know why he agreed to come to this little family meeting with Klaus. He didn’t even know the man. He’d met him twice and then the man was telling him that he loved him, that one day, Dave would love him too. It didn’t make any sense at all, but Dave had decided to accompany the man on his adventure, mostly to see if there was any truth to his words about the future. 

But now Klaus was gone and Dave was left alone with one of his apparent siblings. Dave swallowed and offered the woman a small smile. “So, uh...you’re also from the future?” He asked nervously, feeling very awkward indeed. “What’s that like?”

This is the kind of thing Five would expect out of Allison, with all her let’s pretend to be one big happy family all over again bullshit, because God knows that worked out so well the first time around, didn’t it? Hell, this is the kind of thing Five would expect out of Klaus, with his endless repertoire of absolutely terrible ideas and all, but not Vanya. He trusts Vanya to be at least a little better than the rest of this irrational, obnoxious, oversensitive, imbecilic theater troupe of a family (lunar explosions aside, of course, because it was only one time, and really, if he had the chance to go batshit insane and blow up the moon, he would probably take it, too. Can’t blame her.)

But Vanya looks... excited.

Vanya looks happy. She looks like she can’t wait, like even if he doesn’t say a word, she’ll turn around and rush to her room and pack up her bags and head out to the car, with or without him, with or without the family at all, and it has been a really long time since Five has seen his little sister look so happy.

“A road trip?” Five doesn’t think he even needs to point out what an utter disaster it would be, so he doesn’t. But--and this is the crazy thing--he does think about it. A little bit. “With everyone?” Because Luther can hardly even fit in the car when he’s got the whole thing to himself, never mind when he’s got to make room for five other people. And, besides, he’s almost certain Klaus gets carsick. Doesn’t Klaus get carsick? Klaus definitely used to get carsick, but he’s also not thirteen anymore. “Or just you and me?”

It was supposed to be a simple in-and-out mission--slip into Vanya’s apartment while she was gone, drop It off at her place, and get back out again, so she would never know he was there at all, and she would never connect the dots to him--but the key term there is supposed to be, because this has decidedly not been an in-and-out mission. But, because it was supposed to be a simple in-and-out mission, it never occurred to Five, despite the very real and obvious risk, what the hell he would do if Vanya was still there when he jumped inside. 

The simplest and easiest solution to this unexpected little conundrum is, obviously, to jump right back out again, but she has already seen him, there is no way she hasn’t seen him, since she is right there in the room with him, so if he jumps out now, that will only raise more questions. He’s stuck.   

And all he can think to do is hide It behind his back. So much for being the most intelligent and most resourceful assassin the Commission ever turned out. “Vanya,” he nods at her, like he absolutely expected her to be here, like he wasn’t going to creep around her empty apartment, even if he does have significantly better intentions than usual. “I see you’re busy,” he adds, probably a little too quickly, but it should be good enough to get past Vanya, and get him out the door before she catches on. “I’ll just come back later.”

i still cannot believe the Real, Actual, Legit, Official Vanya Hargreeves™ is mutuals with me 🥺 you never shy away from the tougher, deeper, uglier parts of Vanya--she’s still the sweet, shy, sensitive woman we met in the very first episode, and your portrayal never loses sight of that, but you also never water down the bitter, resentful, harder side to her, the side that still hasn’t forgiven her family, the side of her that will always be at least a little bit angry, a little bit mean, a little bit too close to The White Violin. she’s real. she’s kind and empathetic and gentle and thoughtful and loving, but she is raw, and vulnerable, and wrathful, and it’s such a delicate balance to strike, but on god, you do it. 

i am just so incredibly indescribably lucky to have you as a partner!! 🥰 you have always been so sweet and supportive and approachable to me, and i’ll never forget how welcomed you helped me feel in this community when we met, and i try my best to pay it forward to other new members in this rpc!! also i will always be in your debt for letting me slide into your inbox and ramble about Five and Vanya at all hours of the day & night, you are truly doing the rest of the world a service by absorbing and thus containing my constant babble. the universe thanks you.

“She listens. Even when she thinks you’re wrong, or even when you’re not making much sense, or even when she doesn’t know what you’re talking about, she listens. And she doesn’t ask questions, and she doesn’t push, she just listens. She’s just so stubborn, though. There’s no getting through to her once she’s made up her mind on something, and that ‘something’ is usually extremely ill-advised. You can’t talk her out of things she’s really set on--you just have to trail behind her and clean up the mess on the way. She wasn’t this headstrong when she was little, I’ll tell you that, so I’m hoping to God it’s just a phase, and she’ll grow out of it on her own.”

Five almost reaches out and taps Vanya lightly on the leg, so she’ll lift her head and look up at him (the face-pressed-up-against-knees position really isn’t good for the body, ask him how he knows) but he doesn’t want to startle her (and skin-on-skin contact still makes him want to cut off his hands most of the time). 

“That’s why we’re training you,” Five says, instead, a little too sharp, a little too quick, and he tries to tell himself he’s never wondered if, one day, the world will come down around him all over again because Vanya lost control. “So you can handle your powers when you get upset. Control didn’t come naturally to any of us, either, but we learned. Just like you will.” 

But he can tell Vanya won’t listen to him--he can’t see her face behind her knees, but he knows good and damn well she’s making that face she makes when she’s in a particularly stubborn mood, and doesn’t want to hear his reasonable and logical and overwhelmingly valid points--and, for half a second, he wonders if maybe Allison would have better luck with her right now. 

“Look,” Five pulls his legs up on the sofa, too, and turns fully to face Vanya, “I’ve killed people, too. Thousands of people. I couldn’t even count them all if I tried. If you’ve gone against ‘the Umbrella Academy’s morals, then so have I. If you’ve done bad things, I’ve done worse. If you’ve done bad things, you’re not the only one.”

Five is almost certain it has not actually been hours. He’s almost certain that’s a deliberate exaggeration to drag his attention off the notepad filled up with numbers in his lap, but he’s not going to waste the time it would take to argue the point, so he tears his eyes off the bright white page, off the streaks and smudges of graphite, to look up at her.

“It’s good white noise.” He puts down the pencil in his hand and flexes his sore fingers before he pushes the notepad off his knee. “Helps me think.” He hits the knob to switch the fan off, and he waits until the dull roar in his ear dies down before he turns back to her. “What do you need?”

“i know it doesn’t look like it,  but i could definitely smite them if you wanted me to.”  well,  chuck really did think that he was being helpful,  but usually his version of being helpful was getting a  what the hell  look from everyone else.
