Song Review: Old Crow Medicine Show with Willie Watson - “Down Home Girl” (Live)

Old Crow Medicine Show are partying like it’s 2006 with co-founding member Willie Watson temporarily back on board and touring with the group.

The band is promoting the reunion with a live video of Watson leading it through “Down Home Girl” on stage in Tennessee.

The music is stupendous. The joy it provides to the listeners and the players is, by definition, infectious.

Originally released in 2006, this shuffle puts the blue in bluegrass as Watson, on acoustic guitar, trades licks with Ketch Secor’s harp and Cory Younts’ banjo. When the chorus comes ’round, the on-again, off-again bandmates are enjoying themselves so much, Watson laughs into the mic mid-vocal, proving this reunion is taking place for the right reasons.

Grammy–winning singer, songwriter, and musician Molly Tuttle and her band, Golden Highway, will release their new album, City of Gold, July 21, on Nonesuch. You can pre-order and hear the track “El Dorado” now here.

Produced by Tuttle and Jerry Douglas and recorded in Nashville, City of Gold was inspired by Tuttle’s near constant touring with Golden Highway—fiddler Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, mandolinist Dominick Leslie, bassist Shelby Means, and banjo player Kyle Tuttle—and their growth together as musicians and performers, cohering as a band. These 13 tracks, mostly written by Tuttle and Ketch Secor (Old Crow Medicine Show), capture the electric energy of the band’s live shows by highlighting each members’ musical strengths. City of Gold also features special guest Dave Matthews on the song “Yosemite.”

Song Review: Old Crow Medicine Show feat. Sierra Ferrell - “The Greatest Hustler of All” (Backstage)

One way to make Old Crow Medicine Show even more entertaining is to give Sierra Ferrell a place at the microphone.

That’s what happened backstage at DelFest 2024, when Ferrell joined the unplugged band around a single mic to sing a ramblin’ rendition of “The Greatest Hustler of All,” an OCMS original that’s already on its way to becoming a traditional roots-music standard.

Ferrell sings from that past, too. And she owns this number, handling the front half before giving the final verses to Ketch Secor, with whom she harmonizes on the chorus:

The greatest hustler of all/stands about four-foot-nine/made to be a moocher-low-down hoochie-coocher/her daddy made her walk the line/hustles with the greatest of ease/fools any boy any time/greatest hustler in all of this world/hustled this heart of mine

It’s a masterful performance that was thankfully captured and released on video. For such things should not go unseen and unheard.

Song Review: Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway - “San Joaquin” (Live in Studio)

Making their bluegrass instruments mimic a train, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway are heading down the line to sell some weed in “San Joaquin.”

A Tuttle/Ketch Secor co-write, the high-test track follows “El Dorado” and “Next Rodeo” from City of Gold, out July 21.

The track burns down the track in three minutes, leaving just enough time for solos from Tuttle’s axe, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes’ fiddle, Dominick Leslie’s mandolin, Kyle Tuttle’s banjo and Shelby Means’ upright bass as Tuttle sings the smuggler’s story:

Riding on the San Joaquin/bringing in some Humboldt green … /when I get to Richmond I’ll be gold/soon as this suitcase is sold/’til then I’m rolling down the line/just looking for the next high time/riding on the San Joaquin

“San Joaquin” is not a lyrical masterpiece. But the music is mighty.

Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway have released this live performance video of "Where Did All the Wild Things Go?,” a song from their Grammy-nominated new album, City of Gold, filmed at Sound Emporium Studio A in Nashville, where the album was made. "When I wrote [the song] with Ketch Secor, I couldn’t wait to play it live with my band," Tuttle says. "Since then it’s become one of my favorite songs to perform because it gives everyone the chance to let loose and have a little fun. We hope all you wild things will howl along to this live in studio version!"

Congratulations to Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, who won three IBMA Bluegrass Music Awards at the ceremony hosted by Tuttle and Ketch Secor in Raleigh, North Carolina, last night. Tuttle and the band took home the Album of the Year Award for their debut album, Crooked Tree (which won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album), and Song of the Year for that album’s title track, written by Tuttle and Melody Walker, and Tuttle was named Female Vocalist of the Year, which she won last year as well. Tuttle and the band perform at IBMA World of Bluegrass on Saturday.
