A Trustworthy Buddy

This year, I am committing to seeking a mentor or sponsor who can guide me through my journey in architecture. After reading the AIA Guide 6 on Mentorship & Sponsorship, I realize the importance of having someone who can offer more than just advice but act as a constant source of guidance and support as I grow both personally and professionally.

I am particularly inspired by the section on the value of building long-term mentorship relationships. I feel ready to commit to this because I want to expand my knowledge, not just academically but in real-world scenarios. Throughout this week, Isra Banks has shown me how valuable mentorship can be—her support in refining my resume and understanding the nuances of architectural practice has been transformative. This experience has fueled my desire to connect with someone who can continue to mentor me through my evolving career.

Having a mentor can broaden my perspectives, especially in architecture, where different design philosophies and practices can shape one's approach. Whether it's a professional architect or even a fellow student, having that trustworthy buddy who can provide feedback, share their experiences, and guide me through challenges is something I am ready and excited to embrace this year.

A Supportive Mentor

Mentorship is a crucial aspect of professional growth, offering guidance, knowledge, and support. A mentor needs to be approachable, knowledgeable, and willing to invest time in their mentee's development. Equally, a mentee should be open to learning, proactive in seeking advice, and appreciative of the mentor's experience.

At Gannett Fleming, mentorship is woven into the daily interactions and project discussions. During our site visit to Burlington, MA, I observed how the project manager guided the team through the initial phases of the senior living house project. This interaction exemplified the importance of clear communication and shared goals in a mentor-mentee relationship.

Later, when we met with our host, Isra Banks, she took the time to review our resumes and portfolios, providing valuable feedback. Her approach was encouraging and constructive, embodying the qualities of an effective mentor. This experience underscored the importance of having a mentor who provides technical guidance and supports personal and professional development.

A Community-Driven Client

Today, I had the opportunity to visit Wilmington, where we focused on a senior housing restoration project within a walkable community. The project was inspiring, not just because of its architectural significance but also the client's community-driven nature. The client was deeply invested in creating a space that was accessible, sustainable, and respectful of the existing community fabric.

After a meeting with the project architect, manager, contractor, and client, we discussed the project's development. They explained how the client's dedication to project values significantly influenced the firm's approach. The client emphasized creating a vibrant, inclusive environment, leading the firm to prioritize a design agreed upon by the client and the firm for the project. This alignment of values fostered a strong collaboration between the client and the firm, ultimately enriching the workplace culture at Gannett Fleming.

Intercultural Competence is the ability to interact effectively and respectfully with people from different cultural backgrounds. It involves understanding, appreciating, and navigating cultural differences in a way that fosters inclusivity and collaboration.

At Gannett Fleming, Intercultural Competence is evident in their approach to projects that span various cultural, environmental, and historical contexts. For instance, the focus on historic preservation and environmental concerns during our exploration of transportation projects demonstrates an awareness and respect for different cultural legacies. The emphasis on client use also shows a commitment to understanding and meeting the diverse needs of the communities they serve. This approach highlights the importance of cultural sensitivity and adaptability in their work, ensuring that projects are not only technically sound but also culturally relevant and inclusive.
