Khit doesn't respond, hands continuing to lace boots, gaze fixed on the task.

Ignoring the way his fingers feel stiff.

A sigh slips through his lips, standing and making sure his weapons are secure, the leather sturdy. “Maybe.”

“Is that it?” The voice doesn't sound exasperated, or even angry, sitting instead on the precipice of resigned. Satisfied with the state of his armor, Khit's gaze slides up to Ardbert. He shimmers before him almost like a ghost, the fiery passion he once wore dwindled to a barely lit candle.

Flickering. Fading.

“What else would there be?” He rolls his shoulder, wincing at the tight muscle. That's what he tells himself it is. “Kill the lightwardens, get everyone home.”

“And if you die in the process?” An accusation hangs in the air between them. It feels more like an inevitability in the end.

“A man once made me an offer.” He looks at his glove, the worn leather hiding the growing light, spreading like a sickness through his veins, his aether. “One life, for one world.”

“That's -” Ardbert makes to step forward, momentum lost in the action as the words strike him. His own, thrown back in his face.

“I didn't listen." Khit shrugs a shoulder idly. "He was a fool at the time, his love manipulated and twisted. But this… I see no other way forward. And so I offer it. One life, one world. If it saves the First, gets my friends home, then I gladly give it.”
