“Routine?” said Pidge. “Keith, even Krolia was freaked out and nothing scares your mom.”
“Yeah,” agreed Lance. “Pidge was freaked out too.”
“Me?” said Pidge, her voice rising in an indignant pitch.
“She was pacing around the apartment and—”
“That was you, Lance,” said Pidge.
Keith, enjoying the attention, grinned up at Pidge. “You weren’t worried?” He was stretched out on the floor, the position comfortable after long hours in a Blade of Marmora fighter, protecting a load of food and medicine bound for a war zone.
She punched him lightly and then took his face in her hands. “Of course, I was worried. After everything we’ve all been through. We can’t lose you now, in peace time.”
“Peace time isn’t all that peaceful,” he said. “You know that.”
“Whatever, buddy,” said Lance. “Just…don’t scare us like that again. Okay?”
Keith’s gaze moved from Lance to Pidge. He and Pidge locked eyes, hard reality in between them, the knowledge that nothing in this world was forever. He couldn’t make promises. But Lance was the most fragile of the three.
He met Lance’s eyes and smiled. “I’ll do my best.”
I have a question, you don't have to answer if you do want to, but do you ship kidgance (Keith/Pidge/Lance) in a "Oh, no, we're just best bro buddy friends, and just happen to date the same girl" kind of way? Sorry for the weird ask, I'm just curious. Love your work btw!
Thank you so much for enjoying my work and sending in this ask~!
And the answer is yes, this is exactly how I ship them! I think that Lance and Keith could become good friends, but just aren’t attracted to each other that way. But they’re absolutely dedicated to their adorkable, nerdy gf! Like, you know that meme? The one that’s like “This is my boyfriend, X. And that’s his boyfriend, Y.”? That’s basically them in a nutshell for me. x3
Paths to Prosperity - A Kidgance Royalty AU (Part 1)
@bananatron So, this has been sitting in my brain for the past couple of months and I’ve decided to put it out here. It’s going to be fluffy and angsty (and fluffy again). This part is mostly Plance (and a lengthy outline in general).
Katie, a princess of a wealthy and flourished Holt Kingdom with Lance McClain assigned as her personal body guard.
They were both childhood best friends, almost always together when they were growing up. Lance’s father was a guard in the Castle and he has brought Lance with him from time to time which lead to their eventual bond.
Lance and Katie first met when he was sitting by the tree near the pond saw her chasing ducks nearby. Katie tripped on a tree branch and Lance immediately went to her side and help her. She first told him that he doesn’t need to because she could take care of herself, but she eventually accepted his help since he kept insisting. When she was finally okay, she invited him to play around and he was excited to play with someone inside.
The two managed to form this strong bond since and it was just almost always them being together (Katie couldn’t go out the Castle much and interact with other kids, so she only has Lance with him).
Lance gave Katie the nickname of Pidge because of the duck incident. She pretended that she hated but she liked it because it was unique, and it was something between them.
A few years down the line, things turned differently when Lance decided to follow his father’s footsteps and become a guard in the Castle. The idea of protecting others grew on him and he felt that it was the path given to him. Though the main thing that he wanted to do it was the need to protect Katie from danger.
Being in the Royal Family wasn’t as simple as one thinks. There have been occasional assassins being sent out by the enemies to try and destabilize the Kingdom, but so far none have been successful.
When Lance told Katie that he would become a soldier, she was sad at first because they’re going to be separated but he then mentioned that he would be going to become a Castle guard (since the process was everyone who applied would be regular soldier at first then they’re given an option for the role they want and receive further training). They’re still sad that they’re going to be away each other, but at least it’s just for a couple of months. When he gets back, he’s going to be beside her for sure. He knows.
Katie felt empty without Lance around her, so she decided to occasionally visit him in the training grounds near the Castle (and unknown to her, she was motivating him to be better). He was glad to see her again even if they’re not able to interact. Seeing each other was more than enough for them.
During Lance’s graduation ceremony, Katie was there to give out the medals to the graduates. He was surprised because it was never mentioned that the princess would be present. When she gave the medal to him, she then hugged him. She was proud that he was one of the top in his batch.
Lance shyly invited Katie to join the celebration with his family and she embarrassingly quickly accepted the offer (she was kind of desperate to spend time with him again). Moving the awkward moment aside, Katie asked her parents for permission to use one of the halls for the celebration and they’re more than happy to do it.
The night was full of joy and happiness and the two got to dance together later in the night with everyone cheering for them. Before Lance and his family went home, she gave him a quick peck on his cheek as another way of congratulating him. It caught him surprised, touching the part where she kissed him and cherishing it as much as he could. He wasn’t able to question her since she ran away and reasoned that it was late already and she’s tired too.
When Lance’s role was finally set a week later, he was assigned to be a personal guard of princess Katie. It was Sam and Colleen’s idea to have a personal guard with threats becoming more dangerous. Their bond was also one of the reasons why the idea was pushed out because they’re already comfortable with each other.
Lance was surprised because he expected that he’s just going to be like the other guards. He didn’t think that he would be literally beside Katie at (almost) all times. He was more than glad that he got the role, it was what he wanted.
Shiro was his handler, he overlooked Lance’s training per the King and Queen’s request. Shiro trusted Lance well with his role and he has no doubts about him.
He was very protected of her, especially when they’re going out to visit other kingdoms. She didn’t mind it but ended up admiring his efforts causing her heart to flutter every time and sometimes amused her with how he’s sometimes extra with his actions.
When it’s just the two of them, they acted like best friends, not thinking about their duties. Just enjoying the time, they have with one another.
Months has passed Lance had successfully protected Katie from the threats and he almost lost his life twice already. During those two incidents, she told him that she could’ve have handled it, but he didn’t let her. It was his duty and he wanted to.
In the same time their feelings for one another grew stronger but both of them were afraid to confess thinking that they don’t have feelings for one another.
A few weeks later, something just changed between them. They started to become more awkward with one another. The line between being best friends and being lovers got blurred.
Keith, a prince of the Kogane Kingdom was accompanied by Queen Krolia to visit the Holt royal family.
Both parties had a closed-door meeting regarding the issues of Queen Krolia’s people needing help. The Kogane Kingdom was facing the biggest famine they had, and she was desperate to do anything to save them.
Queen Krolia offered military and technological assistance and marriage of prince Keith to princess Katie to the Holt Kingdom to repay them and strengthen their alliance.
King Sam was intrigued by the idea and asked Queen Krolia for more details while Keith himself sat silently, listening to the exchange. Keith didn’t mind who his partner would be as long as they’re contented with one another. He had a neutral opinion about the idea of the arranged marriage.
Keith didn’t know much about Katie. Even when she was out visiting other kingdoms, not much news come out about her. He hoped that she would understand the marriage and they would get together well.
Queen Colleen meanwhile thought that having an arranged marriage wasn’t a necessity and she knew Katie would never like the idea of it. She tried talking to them about not including that part and she was okay with the idea of helping them even without something in return.
King Sam argued that that it would be beneficial to both Kingdoms and having Keith as Katie’s husband would mean that she would be at least treated properly. He knew Keith, one of the top generals in their army and a successful fighter himself being involved in the front lines from time to time. Keith had an impressive portfolio and Sam also knew how he acted. Sam trusts Keith with the idea of being the husband for his daughter.
Rumors and speculation in the Castle appeared days after regarding the visit of the Kogane royal family. Katie managed to spy on the gossipers and she learned that she would have an arranged marriage with Keith. She heard nothing bad about him and there’s nothing wrong with marrying him. But it’s against her will and her heart was already with someone else (or that’s what she thought).
Lance was about to talk to Katie hoping that they could hangout, but he saw her storming out of her bedroom heading towards the throne room, furious at something. He escorted her and thought of asking some questions but judging from her behavior, she wouldn’t be in the mood for such, but he waited outside.
Katie and Sam argued about the arranged married, shouting at each other and firmly stood on their respective stance about it. He then told her that even Colleen had to agree with the idea. Sam wasn’t changing his mind.
Katie was devastated that the arranged marriage would continue, so she ran as fast as she could to her room to sulk and have some space.
Lance chased her when she got out, both of them heading to Katie’s room. She slammed the door on her way in, but she wasn’t able to lock it because her mind kept thinking about the idea. Lance didn’t think of knocking anymore, he knew that she’s hurt and he’s going to do his best to comfort her. When he got inside, he saw her crying on the bed with her knees folded. It was something Lance learned about her behavior and it meant that she was dealing something heavy. He rapidly went to her side and gave her a hug which she immediately accepted. They both stayed in their position for a while, letting her tears pour out.
When Katie calmed down, she told Lance the reason why she was crying. She told him that she would be married to someone else and she has no say about it.
Lance felt his heart break when he heard her. He wouldn’t have the chance to be with her anymore. Maybe if he had confessed to her before, then they wouldn’t be in this situation. He tried to contain his tears to hide his feelings for her, but he couldn’t. She noticed his face and she cried again but she didn’t ask why he did. They held to each other like there’s no tomorrow, already trying to relish the moments they have with one another.
Colleen entered the room, wanting to talk Katie after the argument. She spotted the two hugging one another and she tried to quietly go near them. She tried pleading to Sam to not continue with the idea, but he was set. She conceded because of the benefits that the Kingdom would receive
Colleen was halfway to them when Lance spotted her. He stood up, blushing and feeling embarrassed at his position and the fact that he was in Katie’s room. He bowed down to her before trying to hastily get out of the room, but she gestured him to say something far away enough from Katie to not be heard.
Colleen: “Could I tell you something.”
Lance: “Yes, my Queen.”
Colleen: “Didn’t I tell you to stop calling me that when it’s just between us?”
Lance: “Oh, uhm, right. Sorry”
Colleen (smiles): “Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it. Anyway, I wanted to tell you Lance that I’m thankful for being around Katie. You were always there when she’s feeling down, and you manage to get her back up again. I admire your efforts with making her happy.”
Lance (failing to control his blush): “Oh-oh I’m just being a friend to her. But you’re welcome, thank you for those words. I just hope that whatever is being planned won’t happen.
Colleen: “I understand you, Lance. I knew that Katie wouldn’t like it and now it’s showing. I do hope too that something could happen.”
Lance: “I hope so.”
[They gave each other a smile before he went outside]
Colleen talked to Katie about how she was against the idea and she wished that she could’ve done more. However, Colleen had to look at the idea logically too and she ended up accepting it. Katie wasn’t mad at her though she was hurt at knowing that nothing could be done about the marriage.
Katie asked her what if she was with someone else already, could it change things around? Colleen told her that she didn’t know though she as at least happy for her that she found someone.
Colleen guessed that it must be him that she fell in love with and Katie shyly told her the truth.
Katie: “What if I’m with someone else? I’m sure Dad would cancel the marriage.”
Colleen: “What do you mean by someone?”
Katie: “What if I’m already in love with someone and I’m in a relationship with them?
Colleen: “I’m not sure, Katie. This is the first time something like this happened in the Kingdom.”
Katie: “Oh....”
Colleen: “Who is this person that you fell in love with anyway?”
Katie: “No one!”
Colleen: “Are you sure about that? Do you want me to guess the name?”
Katie (crossing her arms): “Your answers would be far from it.”
Colleen: “Is that someone in the Castle? Is that someone you grew up with? That someone is your best friend that’s always beside you? That someone who decided to become a soldier and eventually became the one who’s protecting you?”
Katie: “H-how did you know?!”
Colleen: “You’re not that sneaky, Katie. I know that there’s something going on between you and Lance, especially with how you act around with one another.
Katie (flustered): “We-we’re that obvious!?”
Colleen: “Not really, someone needs to look carefully to see what you two mean to each other. Don’t worry much about it, I also know that Lance would love you back. He really cares for you.”
Colleen still supported her even though in this time of uncertainty. She reassured Katie that Lance would love her back because she saw how he was behaving around her. She just wanted the best for Katie.
Matt was the next person Katie wanted to talk to but unfortunately, he was in a different Kingdom doing visits and diplomatic talks.
Katie stayed inside her room the rest of the night, much to Lance’s concern. He wanted to check on her again, but it just might be the best to give her the space she needed. Inside him, he thought that it’s over, there must be no way that he’s going to be with her. So, he tried his best to contain his sadness but as soon he returned to his quarters, he cried hard and almost broke down. He barely got a sleep on that night.
The following morning, Katie was still quiet, staying inside her room. Whenever the Lance or the maids were calling her to eat, Katie replied saying just have the food brought to her room. Lance started to become more restless with her situation, wanting to check on her again but he’ll just have to wait.
Sam and Colleen were deeply concerned for their daughter’s recent behavior, but they decided to not push on with anything since it was heavily stressing her. However, Sam was still firm on his decision and he just hoped that the idea of marrying Keith would grow on her Katie as much as he wanted her daughter to have a choice in this type of matter. Colleen meanwhile wanted to talk about the possibility of Katie being involved with someone else already in hopes that the marriage would be cancelled, but she didn’t (yet) as she risked having Lance being potentially moved away from her daughter and making it more difficult for her.
Katie meanwhile was actually thinking how she was going to confess her feelings to Lance. She didn’t know if he has feelings for her or if he’s just doing his job as a guard, that’s why she was hesitating to confess to him before. It was one of the things that made the line blurred. After spending most of her day in the room, she finally decided to do it at night when her parents were asleep.
Lance was called by Katie to get inside her room, he saw her looking relatively okay compare to last night. It was just a quick talk, she asked him to go to the tree (the one where they first met) at midnight if he could because she doesn’t want to interfere with his rest, knowing how hard he did his job. He didn’t mind it and he replied to her, “I can go, Katie. Anything for you.” He valued her happiness and he’s going to make sure that she’s going to receive it.
Midnight finally came, Lance was silently walking out of his quarters until Shiro spotted him. Shiro asked him where he was going, and he said that he just needs some air. It was unusual for him to go out late at night, he always went to sleep once his duty was over. Shiro let him by, but he was a bit suspicious, so he decided to quietly follow Lance.
Lance was waiting under the tree when Katie arrived. It was this moment that she’s going to confess to him.
Lance: “Hi there, Katie.”
Pidge: “Hi, Lance. I wanted to tell you something.”
Lance: “Go on.”
Pidge: “Do you remember what happened here?”
Lance: “Of course, how could I not? This is where we first met, where we started our friendship.”
Pidge (smiles): “I always remember that moment as if it was yesterday. I’m glad that I got to meet you.”
Lance: “I’m glad that I got to meet you too. I was so happy with that we’re best friends.”
Pidge: “That’s the thing, Lance.”
Lance (alarmed): “What do you mean? Did I do something wrong?”
Pidge: “It’s not that! You didn’t do anything wrong. I love our friendship but... I-I want us to b-be more than that.”
Lance (puzzled): “More than our friendship?”
Pidge (tearing up): “I-I love you, Lance!”
Lance (holds her arm to try calm her down): “Please, Katie, don’t cry. I don’t want to see you cry nor be sad.”
Pidge: “You mean so much to me, Lance. You were always there for me.”
Lance: “I love you too, Pidge. But please don’t be sad.”
Pidge: “I don’t want to do that stupid marriage! I just want to be with you. I don’t know why it was even thought of.”
Lance: “I’m here, I’m here. I felt sad when I heard it last night, it almost broke my heart. I thought that I would never have the chance to be with you. But I’m glad that we’re here now. I promise that I would do anything to keep you happy, Princess Katie, my Pidge. I would be always be there for you.”
[Lance cupped her face and kissed Katie]
They hugged afterwards, Katie cried again at the thoughts of the marriage, but Lance was holding her and reassuring her that he would try his best to do anything against it. Then they sat down by the tree, reminiscing all the moments they had and gazing at the beautiful night above them.
Shiro saw their kiss, it put a small smile on his face and being glad that they were finally together. Ever since the day Shiro started to handle Lance, he always noticed those small between the two, their pinning for one another. He also heard the rumors regarding the arranged marriage, but it’s not his place to do anything about it. He wished for the best for Katie and Lance. He went back to his quarters shortly.
Lance escorted Katie back to her room, before giving each other a kiss again before they split. When they went on their ways, both of them just knew that they were going to change for the better and forget about the mess she’s going through. They sensed that it wouldn’t be a sad ending for them. They just somehow feel it.
Next part would show Katie and Lance’s relationship after the confession, Keith’s arrival to the Holt Kingdom to start courting Katie, and the challenges the three would face. I hope that I don’t get too long working on it.

Wake Me When It’s Over // Chapter 3 – Safe and Sound
Pairing: Keith/Pidge/Lance Rating: T Chapters: 3/? Summary: After getting themselves into a tricky situation, the team is saved by two other survivors who have some very interesting news and an even more alluring offer for them. [x] (Preview under cut)
"Are we really doing this?" Keith asked Shiro, eyes darting between Allura's back and his team behind him. "No offense, but why are we taking her word and following after her as if she were some kind of queen? We don't even know her!"
"You're right," Lance interjected, shooting Keith an unimpressed look, "but that's all we can do for now. Out here, we're just trying to survive, like Pidge says. Right Pidge?"
"Fuck off and concentrate on making sure we get to the van alive," she hissed, much to Keith's amusement.
"Awww," Lance said with a small tsk, "is little Pidge jealous that I'm not flirting with her?"
"Why on earth–"
Don't worry," he said, winking, "you're still the only girl for me."
Keith rolled his eyes. "She's going to feed you to the zombies if you keep talking, you know."
Lance rolled his eyes. "If she hasn't fed you to the half dead creeps then I think I'll be okay."
Keith narrowed his eyes suspiciously. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Isn't it obvious?" Lance asked, emitting a small snort. "If Pidge can handle you for however long she's had to put up with your ugly face, then I think she can handle me teasing her."
"Maybe she can, but I won't hesitate to throw you into a crowd of zombies," Keith bit back bitterly. "Watch your tongue, Lance. One day you're going to die because you can't shut your mouth."
"Okay, we went from Lance innocently teasing Pidge to Keith making death threats. Am I missing something?" Hunk asked, scratching the back of his head in confusion.
Pidge only rolled her eyes. "Men are idiots," she simply said, looking at Hunk. "Especially these two."
"Hey!" Both Lance and Keith said at the same time, casting her offended looks.
