Australia's largest asylum seeker advocacy, aid and health organization promoting and protecting the human rights of asylum seekers.
Here is a great campaign by the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre which aims to raise awareness of the inhumane living conditions of Australian detention centres and the physical, mental and sexual abuse inflicted on children in detention as a result. This includes sending a five-month old baby and their parents back to the Nauru detention centre despite advice to the Department of Immigration.
What the government is attempting to do with its recent legislation is conceal what happens in these detention centres in order to cover up the abuses which take place. Only by informing people of what actually happens in detention centres can a genuine discussion be created, instead of the government’s rhetoric of “stop of boats”.
For non-Australians, please share this and let the world know of the flagrant human rights abuses which are being conducted by the Australian government off its shores in the name of “border protection”.

Speak up for kids in detention by the hand of the Australian Government.
There are a couple of petitions to get the kids out of detention centres for refugees trying to legitimately claim refugee status in Australia. https://www.getup.org.au/campaigns/refugees/speak-up-for-kids-in-detention/speak-up-for-all-kids-in-detention http://t.co/oW2rbSib1g This is a no-brainer. Governments of both the major parties in Australia have committed to removing children from detention centres. Both have lied and failed. Children are vulnerable, and impressionable. The impacts of these settings will be deep seated and long lasting in their psychies. Frankly, we have an equal responsibility to remove adults from detention centres, particularly children's' parents, as the impact on all is significant. Despite rhetoric about evidence based policy making, our government continues to ignore the facts about refugees who may actually represent a risk to our society. If they used these facts, 99% of refugees would be waiting within the community for their assessment, availing themselves of support they are legally entitled to, rather than being shipped off to jails in remote locations, where legal aid is more difficult and the media has less access and visibility of how they are being treated. Refugees are not "illegals" as our embarrassing Prime Minister choose to call them. Refugees are entitled, by Australian laws and our signature to international treaties, to seek refuge in our country, regardless of their method for getting here. Why do the media and so-called journalists continue to refuse to acknowledge this? Why don't they take our largely ridiculous politicians to task on their wilful ignorance and/or flat out public deception and misinformation? As a starting point at least, let's help refugee kids and their parents to start their new lives in safety and dignity. Please sign the petition if you agree.
