Do you know if or when we are getting a new season of miss murple, because I had heard that ITV had sold it to BBC, but no other news
Hello! As far as I know, ITV broadcaster told RadioTimes.com 3 years ago that it “has no plans to make any more but insists that Marple and Poirot repeats remain a vital part of their schedule.” The existing ITV’s Poirot and Marple shows will continue airing and getting sold internationally.
There’s also this:
BBC drama boss Ben Stephenson said: “I am delighted that the great British institution that is the BBC is going to have a long term relationship with the works of Agatha Christie - both the BBC and Christie are as brilliantly British as it is possible to get.”
He hinted that more projects would soon follow, adding: “We are having lots of exciting discussions about what next.” Both Marple and Poirot could be revisited further down the line. [x]
I don’t know if the last bit about Marple and Poirot being revisited is part of Stephenson’s quote or if it’s just something the interviewer assumed would happen in the future.
Since the BBC will have a “long term relationship with the works of Agatha Christie”,I do think it’s possible they’re discussing new adaptations for the two sleuths, shows that would star new actors. After all, the ITV versions are selling really well, the BBC knows they’ve got bankable characters on their hands. Mathew Prichard said in the RadioTimes article BBC’s commitment to the Christie productions “no doubt will result in compelling new adaptations, to be enjoyed by fans old and new.” He didn’t mention our detectives specifically but it could be implied.
The question is whether they want their new Poirot to co-exist with Kenneth Branagh’s movie(s) (the more, the merrier?), like their Sherlock tv show did with the Guy Ritchie blockbuster Sherlock Holmes films. And maybe we’re getting a Marple mini-series along the likes of BBC’s And Then There Were None (2015) instead of a show spanning several seasons? The new direction they’ve been taking the properties has proved successful, they might be using a similar approach for Marple AND Poirot.
Sorry I couldn’t help you further, I wish we knew something more concrete! Thank you for your message! :)
