I need to talk in my echo chamber. (And this will NOT be just another Wuthering heights rant bc trust me i went on too many of those)
Why tf does emerald fennel keep white washing and straight washing stories just for sloppy smut??
First I was furious over her new Wuthering Heights adaptation bc i love the book and how it deals with race, class, love AND hate. From the trailers i have seen she is just going to make it a smut fest. The book about child abuse is being marketed as a dark romance. Catherine and Heathcliff do not even kiss (and are lowkey half siblings). Im my opinion they only really love each-other bc they are the only ones who do not want to conform to societal expectations. Like ask me 4 years ago and i would have told you she used him as a mental outlet for freedom and how she viewed herself as animalistic, bc that is how they classified Heathcliff’s behavior, and he likes her bc she said nice things to him…sometimes (bc of society). I wrote a whole fucking essay on a 200 word question over it that i forgot to turn in.
There is also a 100% chance they will not also adapt vol 2 (whether be bc they do not want to or they do not have the money to). Literally there is no negative point about this movie that i do not 100% agree with so i am going to stop myself.
I often now say i wish she just changed the names so at-least when i google Wuthering Heights this movie will not come up.
(There are already like 20 movie adaptations of WH, including internationally, and of the western ones only ONE has a non-white Heathcliff. Like when will this end, and the movie is coming out in the big 26 too….just wish they would not play it for two days only at a free local theater if mine and have one of those days be my birthday, it was one if the cool numbers too 😔. Like how did a korean video game beat you out for a Heathcliff design???)
THEN i watched the Talented Mr.Ripley (bc people compared it to salt burn) and oh boy do not get me started bc these opinions are my own. How do you make a movie made in 1999 with themes about internalized homophobia LESS GAY in 2025. Like yeah he had a thing for J.E. but you could lowkey make it straight like it changed nothing about the plot. It is just weird that when SB came out it was celebrated and kinda fetishized for the crush the male lead had by the audience and (i assume) largely due ti the fact
One can be read as internalized homophobia and the other as an excuse to watch a man whore himself out on-screen. Like no excuse. Emerald really is horny af bc what is with both of the unnecessary sex scenes in the movie (not even as a comparison they were just not needed)???
(This is assuming she watched the movie and or in the books the themes of identity and internalized homophobia are also there. There is some of that in her movie so i am assuming one is at least true. I did read reddit threads and got no clear answer but the new tv show on Netflix is apparently accurate to so I’ll give it a watch if i have time.)
At least she changed the names and made it her own but the story was as deep as the kiddie pool made for only sex and shock value so I am a hater.
I was gonna say what book to movie adaptation she should do next but lowkey she hit the big three already (sexism, racism, homophobia)…idk maybe hit sexism again but like do the handmaids take but they are lowkey hot for the men that oppress them and watch the book tok girlies eat it up. Maybe have her adapt an anti-capitalist novel and make it sexy 😘. What if we had Sorry to Bother You and Cashious had to worm a bit harder fir that promotion🥴 ….what if the horse men in Sorry to Bother you had a LARGER role 😳 (please take this as a joke i really 100% do not wanna see that).
