When I heard Prince Harry’s book was titled Spare, I burst out laughing at work. Everyone was so confused but all I could think of was

“KILL THE SPARE”

More than a Spare

How Cedric Diggory Helped Win the War

When we talk about Cedric Diggory, we often focus on him being a tragic, innocent victim.  Cedric was never a member of the D.A. or the Order.  He never even had a chance  to know who was killing him and why.  He was cursed to death simply because he was a spare- an unneeded body who had accidentally been brought to Voldemort along with Harry.  However, in lamenting how pointless Cedric’s murder was, we can easily overlook the crucial contribution Cedric made to the war- the people that his death inspired.

Imagine if Harry had come back to the quidditch pitch alone, while Cedric was waiting safely with his parents.  Harry was battered and traumatized, but alive. Physically, his injuries were no worse than injuries he had suffered in his previous annual encounters with dark wizards.  No doubt many people - like Dumbledore, Ron, Hermione, and Sirius - would still have that Voldemort had returned based only on Harry’s words, but many more people might have been skeptical.

Without the horror of seeing a Hogwarts student murdered, some of the most crucial players in the war might never have risen up to fight.  Dumbledore’s Army played an important role in the Battle of Hogwarts, but without Cedric’s death, many of them may have stayed on the sidelines.  These students’ transition into warriors began just months after Cedric died, with the first D.A. lesson, and many of them got involved, at least in part, because they had seen a fellow student murdered.

It is time that we give Cedric the credit he deserves. Voldemort may have seen him as a spare, but we can see him as a hero.
