I arrived in NYC last night very excited about our first appearance at @154artfair NEW YORK. #Repost @edcrossfineart with @instagrabapp The Jesus of Lubeck #KimathiDonkor #historypainting #blackhistory #africanhistory #africa #africanart @artnewsafrica #iniva @iniva we are not taught in British history the fact that Queen Elizabeth 1st funded England's first foray in to slave trading via her stalwart courtier the adventurer Capt Hawkins - he used the Jesus of Lubeck a ship belonging to Elizabeth to transport his first shipment of slaves from what is now Sierra Leone - the model for this painting is a leading fashion designer from that country. The use of the reverse side of the canvas mirrors the subject the telling of the other side of the story - the stretcher bars calling up the imprisonment on the ship - the canvas -a sail. Most of Donkor's works are conundrums and this is one of my favourites - sold recently to the UK's biggest collection of African art - his work is also in the #SindikaDokolo collection #blackbritishart #painter #artist #art #kimathidonkor
