Ladies and Gentlemen, step right in & get ready to be entertained (at high speeds) by the El Centro Circus. Yes I run a circus. Seriously... I honestly feel from time to time that I step into a circus at 8 Hillcrest Avenue (one of my schools) several times a week. The instant that Shelly (aka Nursie) buzzes the door I am greeted by the following: Water splashing out of the fish tank onto the ground (yes the walkway that greets parents, kids and teachers) as the fish try to get their food and everyone's attention. "Princess, I need the mop. There's water on the verandah" I scream immediately. The birds coo and whistle (yes they're almost across from the fish tank) as they try desperately to say hola amidst the morning's rendition of tears while mums and dads say adios to their little ones, the occasional 3 year old runs around with smears of his breakfast are evident on his face (shoeless and on tip toes) while being chased after a Tía screaming "Para, sientate." "Smile guys you're on candid camera!" Not really. Instead the environment is a reflection of the people in it. It's real. It's seemingly chaotic. But it's high energy, real life and it is reality. "Hola Lola, Hi Hunter (the birds). Morning everyone" I greet emphatically. I haven't put down my belongings yet. Nor am I answering the cell phone that's buzzing uncontrollably in my pocket. I'm also smiling as I receive pinches to my thighs that I feel as I see little eyes on top of smiles heralding my attention. Oh the joys of hair styles, fancy outfits (even though the kids wear uniforms), new shoes, and sometimes even lipstick/ lip gloss or Mummy's kisses on a little girl's lips. Like my hair? Like my new shoes? I'm wearing a pretty skirt. Beautiful! Qué lindo! Hola hola Coca Cola! Get the picture yet? And oh .. Morning messages "So and so is running late" "Did you give permission for this?" "He is sick today" "Hola Tía Rachael" I smile. I wave. I wish for all leaving to have a great day. I laugh on the inside on what I see and hear and am thinking. Of course a circus is a circus. There are lots of acts and sideshows. Patrons are entertained. They laugh (sometimes they don't). They eat and drink (and sometimes refuse to). There's a start time and an end time. This begins before 7:45 am and continues until I (the ringmaster) force myself out of there late evening. To exercise (rehearse) for the following day. Do I love it? Absolutely! Would I trade this ever? Never! I'm looking for a top hat and stick so I can continue to laugh and smile and be grateful for the show. As I pause to reflect on what I do and how I do it I'm reminded of how much I love it. Thanks to everyone who make my circus all the more fun day after day. Grateful for the energy at #8Hillcrest as we #learnthefun
