hello! so i have been suffering from anxiety and depression for quite a while and i (along with my family and doctor) am considering getting an emotional support dog. i have read up on this a little bit but it is still unclear to me; can my dog wear a vest/harness that says “emotional support animal” on it when i am in public or is that illegal (for pretending to be a service dog)? i would only need my esa with me when i am going to school, which has already been approved. sorry if this is long.
No apologies needed! You are totally fine. As far as your question: simply having your dog wear a vest or harness, especially if the vest says “Emotional Support Animal” and not “Service Dog/Animal”, is not illegal as long as you aren’t claiming that your dog is a service dog! By law, service dogs are not required to wear any kind of vest or harness in order to be recognized as service animals, therefore there can be no designated “service dog vest/harness” that can be claimed illegal for any animal other than a service animal. So long as you are not claiming that your dog is a service animal or overstepping legal boundaries with your ESA, you’ll be just fine. My ESA Tucker has a vest that’s the same as those most commonly associated with service dogs. I got it off Amazon and it came with patches for both use as a harness for service dogs and ESAs. I just use the patch that says “Emotional Support Animal” on his harness, and he only wears it where it is requested by my school’s Residence Office (they request he wear some kind of identifier in indoor common areas outside of the dorm, which he doesn’t spend much time in anyways). It’s my personal preference that he doesn’t wear his ESA vest much unless either of us needs it, but you can also have your own ESA wear their vest in whatever situations you’d like! The only issue comes up when you overstep the boundary between ESAs and service animals, for example attempting to bring your ESA into non-pet-friendly stores as you would a service dog or violating any on-campus spaces intended for only service dogs.
This answer got a little lengthy haha, but here’s the short of it: Yes! Your ESA can wear a vest stating that they are an Emotional Support Animal without worrying about it impersonating a service dog.
