Konark Sun Temple Konark Sun Temple is a very famous and ancient temple located in Konark in Puri district in Orrisa,India. It is an ancient temple dedicated to God Surya. The name "Konark" is made up of two Sanskrit terms 'Kona' mean corner or angle referring southeast direction of Konark and 'Ark' mean sun or surya. It is a classic illustration of Kalinga architecture attributed to king Narsimhadeva l in about 1250 CE. It celebrates a very popular event around February called 'Chandrabhaga Mela' which attracts most of pilgrims' attention. This temple was called the "Black Pagoda" in European sailor accounts as early as 1676 because its great tower appeared black. It served as an important landmark along with The Jagannath Temple in Puri called the 'white pagoda' for sailors in Bay of Bengal.
