On This Day In Royal History . 2 March 1316 . King Robert II of Scotland was born . . ◼ Robert was a grandson of Robert Bruce, & the first in the House of Stewart dynasty. The name came from his ancestor Walter Stewart who was appointed High Steward of Scotland by David I. He had escaped following the defeat of David II at Halidon Hill in 1333 & took over as Guardian of Scotland while David was in exile in France. . ◼ He was a mature man of 54 when he succeeded to the throne on the death of David, but he was weak king & did not rule well over the nobles who were critical of him leading to a loss of prestige of the crown. His heir John took over the rule to attempt to restore law & order. . ◼ A truce with England in 1384 was short lived, & the border wars continued. In 1388 the Scots under James Douglas won a victory at Otterburn near Newcastle over Henry Percy ‘Hotspur’ of Northumberland. . ◼ Robert married Elizabeth Mure in 1336. From this union, ten children reached adulthood. . ◼ In 1355, Robert married his second wife Euphemia de Ross. On This Day In History . 24 July 1567 . James Stuart becomes King of Scotland as his mother Mary, Queen of Scots is forced to abdicate. . . ◼ James was the son of Mary, Queen of Scots, & a great-great-grandson of Henry VII, King of England, & Lord of Ireland (through both his parents), uniquely positioning him to eventually accede to all three thrones. . ◼ James succeeded to the Scottish throne at the age of thirteen months, after his mother Mary was compelled to abdicate in his favour. . ◼ Four different regents governed during his minority, which ended officially in 1578, though he did not gain full control of his government until 1583. . ◼  In 1603, he succeeded the last Tudor monarch of England, Elizabeth I, who died without issue. He continued to reign in all three kingdoms for 22 years, a period known as the Jacobean era after him, until his death in 1625 at the age of 58. The Coronation of King James VI of Scotland . . ◼ James was annointed King of Scots at the age of thirteen months at the Church of the Holy Rude, Stirling, by Adam Bothwell, Bishop of Orkney, on 29 July 1567. . ◼ The sermon at the coronation was preached by John Knox. King James I of Scotland of the House of Stewart married Joan Beaufort, a cousin of Henry VI of England & the niece of Thomas Beaufort, 1st Duke of Exeter, & Henry, Bishop of Winchester. . ◼ They were wed at St Mary Overie Church in Southwark. They were feasted at Winchester Palace that year by her uncle Cardinal Henry Beaufort. She accompanied her husband on his return from captivity in England to Scotland, and was crowned alongside her husband at Scone Abbey. As queen, she often pleaded with the king for those who might be executed. . As heir apparent to the Scottish crown, he became Duke of Rothesay. . ◼ James IV was the King of Scots from 11 June 1488 to his death.
