57. “Teach me to fight.”
“Teach me to fight.”Lily turned her head towards James’ voice, searching for him in the darkness of the Gryffindor common room. When her eyes adjusted, she found him sitting on the floor, his back against the wall, wand limb in his hands.“What do you mean?” she spoke softly, not wanting to disturb Sirius and Marlene, who were sleeping on the couch.Sleep came with difficulty, nightmares overwhelming everyone. It was easier being awake; alert.“This is hopeless,” James elaborated, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. “We can’t bloody defeat a Dark Lord. We’re children!”Lily could see where these thoughts were coming from. The war was going badly, as all wars do. Many had been lost, including loved ones, and it didn’t look like it was going to end soon. Many more would die, and then Voldemort would win. Yes, it made sense to think like that. But they couldn’t afford these thoughts. They couldn’t afford giving up, handing Voldemort their freedom. Lily would die fighting, and it would be a proud death. She could only wish for her friends to just hold on for a little bit longer. Fight a little bit braver.“Yeah, well. We’ve managed so far, haven’t we?” she said, finally letting the exhaustion win and lying down on the other couch.“But what about tomorrow? What about the day after that? How do you do it, Lily?” James usually had a fearless facade on at all times, never letting anyone see how he really felt, but it seemed like, with Lily, it was different. She wouldn’t judge him, because she was kind and she understood. She would kiss away the fear, kiss away the worries, until it was only them and the dreams they held in their hearts.“I think of my friends and all the love there is in the world. I think of how beautiful the sky is every day, even when it’s raining and I think of braveness and what it will mean when all of this is over. I think of freedom, James.”He didn’t answer, not immediately, and in that time Lily heard him get up and shuffle closer. She closed her eyes, let the steady beating of her heart drown all other sound.He was close enough for her to reach now. She could feel his cold breath.“How’s that working out for you?” he whispers, and then Lily feels his hand. It’s in her hair, brushing away the tangles with his fingers.She knows he’s mocking her. He never believed in the beauty of life; never saw the simplicity in nature.She would teach it to him. “Just kiss me, Potter.” When he did, she heard Sirius mumbling something of a room and how they should be in one. She laughed, while James hit his best friend in the head.They found a room and locked the door, undressing like there wasn’t any time left in the world. There was beauty in that too.
