#JackedKirby - I Fought The Colossus (both in the US and the UK!) 💥💥💥 Jack contributed many “monster of the month” stories to the early Atlas/Marvel anthology books, but today we found something kind of cool to share with ya’ll today! Strange Tales #Issue72 (December 1959) featured a great giant robot cover story called “I Fought the Colossus!”. The story leads of the issue and is the basis for the cover, which was pencilled by Jack and colored by Chris Rule. (Pic 1). 💥💥💥 In pic 2 we see the UK reprint of this issue, published by L Miller in their Spellbound comic series (#Issue6) a year later (sometime in 1960). Although the original art appears untouched, many times the covers were altered/recolored or altogether redrawn. This one gives the monstrous robot a more realistic color scheme, as well as adding a beautiful reddish sunset backdrop and a more colorful cityscape to contrast Jack’s giant robot!!! I have to admit I kinda like the UK one better!!! 💥💥💥 One last cool tidbit from this issue is that Jack’s pencils for the Colossus story were inked by the legendary Steve Ditko!!! Pics 3 & 4 Show off some interiors on the very short story... Ditko also had his own story appearing later in the issue in which he handled his own pencils! #JackedKirby - When Machines Can Read The Thoughts of Men!!! Machine Man was Kirby’s creation in the pages of the 2001: A Space Odyssey that spun off into his own book. The opening pages of #Issue3 of Machine Man (published in June of 1978) are some of the most forward thinking technological ideas Kirby put down on paper in his many years of working the funny books. We see an awesome splash of MM projecting an image out of his eye... but it’s not till the second page where we discover the source of the image!!! There is a patient lying in a hospital bed and MM is using his multi tooled fingers to probe the mind if the patient and fully display the fantastic images that are located within!!! Following up an opening single page splash with a stunning double page splash may be uncommon for the average comic artist, but for Jack it was just another convention that he pulled off So Well! #JackedKirby - The Creation of OMAC, the One Man Army Corp!!! OMAC is one of Kirby’s weirdest series, and that is saying a lot since Kirby trafficked in the weird and wacky most of his career. Spanning only 8 issues, the series tells the story of a normal human named Buddy Blank who is chosen to become the experimental One Man Army Corp, OMAC. Through a “computer-hormonal operation done by remote control” (Kirby’s words... I told you it was weird) Blank is fused with the omni-potent Satellite Brother Eye and undergoes a fantastic physical transformation whenever the situation calls for it. . #Issue1 if the series (published in Sept/Oct 1974) starts at the end, Tarantino style with OMAC busting into a secured facility to do some damage... but then the story rewinds a bit to reveal exactly how Blank was chosen to become OMAC and his first transformation into the character. The transformation is documented on these pages, and Blank is as shocked as anyone that it’s happening because he isn’t in control of this transformation... Brother Eye is!!! . The series is quite ambitious considering Kirby only began it because of the early cancelation of his 4th World titles and the need to fulfill his contract. This joins the Demon and Kamandi as Jack’s last works for DC on this stint, and all three of those series show no sign of him mailing it in... he is at times doing some of his best work as a writer/plotter of the stories and the art is groundbreaking. . #JackedKirby - The Great Troll Invasion of March 1967 !!! . There were many great stories told in the pages of Journey Into Mystery and The Mighty Thor that would challenge Thor and Asgardian family... but few were as epic as the Troll invasion that ran for a few Issue story arc back in 1967!!! . Starting in #Issue137 and culminating in #Issue139 the Asgardian, including Thor as well as Odin himself, do battle with the Rock Trolls led by the dastardly Ulik!!! These grotesque creatures come forth using a spells/weapons from the great Orikal to capture Mjolnir and attempt to overthrow Asgard itself! . This particular splash occurs in the middle of #Issue138 from March of 1967 and it occurs at the exact moment the invading forces cross into Asgard through the portal. The monstrous facial features, awesomely designed helmets and wild weapons are so insanely beautiful and unique that they can only be Kirby! Look at that two pronged blaster gun that is attached to the troll who is firing its backpack... what the hell is that! It’s amazing... as only Kirby could do!!! There are so many cool action panels in this three issue arc that I could post on it for a month... #JackedKirby - The End Of An Era! . It seemed like it would last forever, but nothing ever does. Jack and Stan had worked for 108 straight issues (102 regular, 6 annuals) together on the Fantastic Four, and with #Issue102 in September if 1970 it was finally the end! . In an adventure that brought back an old enemy in Namor, an unfamiliar enemy in Magneto and all types of impending war Jack left it all on the pages with this one. I love the action and adventure in this one, and although it is sad that it was over it was good to see Jack go out on such a high note! . One thing that stands out to me is the final panel that Jack drew on this last page. It’s a close up of the alarm that is alerting the FF of inbound warships... there is something magical and technical about Jack’s alarm screen design. It si so simple but looks so complex... and it’s loaded with Kirby Krackle.
